Chapter 3475: Abandoning public affairs for personal gain
Zhu Feng refused to take the bowl.
He just stared at Nan Yan's overly attentive look and narrowed his eyes slightly: "What are you planning now?"
Nan Yan had an innocent expression on her face, her eyes wide open as she said, "Alas, I'm just a weak woman, how could I possibly have any bad intentions?"
Zhu Feng said, "Humph."
He still didn't take the bowl, but just glanced at Nan Yan coldly.
The two of them have been supporting each other for so many years that they can no longer figure out whether they understand each other better or understand each other better. In this situation, Nan Yan doesn't think she can really hide her thoughts from him; in fact, she may have already thought of her own plan when he decided on this matter.
So she placed the bowl of soup in front of Zhu Feng, and then said honestly, "I want to go with you tomorrow."
Just as expected.
Zhu Feng was both angry and amused by what he heard, but he didn't have the energy to scold her. He just sighed and said, "Didn't I make it clear to you before? This matter is different from the previous meeting with the Parthian envoy. I can't let you act recklessly like that. Why don't you listen?"
Nan Yan leaned over the table, staring at him intently: "In the eyes of the emperor, I am just a fool."
Zhu Feng sneered.
Nan Yan said sternly, "When I met with the Parthian envoy, I knew they came with friendly intentions, so I dared to do this. But this time, I am meeting with the King of Yue. I know the situation on both sides, so how dare I disguise myself as a palace maid and try to fool them? I once entered the Yue camp, and the people there might recognize me."
Having said this, she paused.
Zhu Feng's expression also darkened slightly.
Although more than a decade had passed, and although the two of them would sometimes get together to reminisce about the past when they had nothing better to do, they never spoke of this past, especially the things Tong Jie had done to Nan Yan back then, which had nearly caused Zhu Feng to misunderstand and brought their relationship to an end. It had left a scar on both of their hearts.
So when Zhu Feng heard her say that, his face turned a little ugly.
In order to get him to agree, Nan Yan could only continue to speak stubbornly, "So Your Majesty, please believe me. I absolutely do not intend to go along with you and cause trouble."
Zhu Feng was silent for a while before suppressing the sudden anger in his heart. He looked at her again and said, "Then why are you going with me?"
Nan Yan said, "When the emperor meets with the rulers and ministers of Yue, it will naturally be at the meeting place, and there will definitely be someone to prepare behind him. I will follow him there and just watch the emperor from afar."
After hearing this, Zhu Feng's expression softened a little.
But he glanced at Nan Yan again and said, "What's the point of watching from afar? Do you really have to follow?"
Nan Yan looked into his eyes and said seriously, "Whether the emperor is in glory or in danger, even if I cannot be by his side, I will not be too far away from him."
“…”
Zhu Feng also looked at her and suddenly stopped talking.
But in those always deep eyes, a sudden emotion flickered, like a sudden surge of tide that seemed about to be unstoppable, but he did not show it. He just lowered his head, coughed lightly, and then said, "If you want to go, go."
When Nan Yan heard this, she immediately laughed.
Zhu Feng added, "But listen carefully, if you dare to move tomorrow, I will strangle you to death when I get back, without stopping for a moment."
Nan Yan smiled and said, "As you wish!"
She immediately picked up the bowl of fish soup and placed it in front of Zhu Feng again, saying, "Your Majesty, can you drink your soup in peace this time?"
Zhu Feng snorted again before taking the bowl.
The two of them finished their dinner while chatting and laughing. Because of the important events the next day, Zhu Feng did not return to the study to handle government affairs, but went to bed early with Nan Yan.
Nan Yan originally thought that with such a big thing happening tomorrow, she might not be able to sleep, but she fell asleep as soon as she lay down.
When I woke up, it was already the next morning.
However, it was still dark, and the room was pitch black. Nan Yan couldn't tell what time it was. She wondered if she'd be too late to get up if she took another nap. So she subconsciously turned to look out the window, but when she did, she saw Zhu Feng, who was sleeping beside her, with his eyes open.
The room was pitch black, but his eyes were so bright, like two stars.
Nan Yan asked in surprise, "The Emperor isn't asleep yet?"
Zhu Feng seemed to be concentrating on something. When he heard her speak suddenly, he was startled. He looked down and finally breathed a sigh of relief. He laughed angrily and said, "Who's awake?"
"Then Your Majesty—"
"I just woke up."
"Oh. You scared me. I thought the emperor hadn't slept all night because of what happened today."
Zhu Feng snorted coldly, "How big of a deal could it be to keep me awake all night?"
Nan Yan chuckled.
As the two of them were talking, they woke up. She stood up and looked at the dark window, mumbling, "What time is it?"
Zhu Feng said, "It's just past the hour of Mao. If you're still sleepy, why don't you sleep a little longer?"
Nan Yan shook her head: "It's almost time to get ready. I won't sleep anymore."
After saying that, both of them stood up. When the people outside heard the noise, they also got ready. Aunt Tongyun brought people in with hot water and towels to help the emperor and the concubine wash up. Zhu Feng had just finished combing his hair when Xiao Shunzi suddenly ran in from outside, panting and saying, "Your Majesty."
Zhu Feng frowned: "What's the rush?"
Xiao Shunzi saluted Nan Yan again before saying, "Your Majesty, news just came from Lord Li's residence that Madam Li was injured."
“…”
“…”
As soon as these words were spoken, everyone in the house fell silent.
Aunt Tongyun was leading people to put breakfast on the table. When she heard this, she subconsciously frowned and glanced at Nanyan.
Nan Yan also frowned and asked, "What's going on?"
Xiao Shunzi said, "To answer your Majesty, I don't know the specific circumstances, but I heard that Madam Li accidentally fell and broke her hand. Lord Li was so worried that he sent people to knock down the doctor's door in the city before dawn this morning."
“…”
Nan Yan frowned and stopped talking.
Zhu Feng had already sat down at the table and said calmly, "Did he ask someone to come over and ask for leave?"
Xiao Shunzi said, "Yes."
Zhu Feng thought for a moment and said, "If that's the case, then let him stay in the mansion and accompany his wife peacefully. Oh, and don't go knocking on the doctor's door, lest it get out and make things look bad. Have someone send the imperial physician over to treat Madam Li's injuries. Don't come back to see me until she's healed."
Everyone's face looked a little unhappy.
After all, he was going to meet with the King of Yue today, and Li Bushang was the commander of the Embroidered Uniform Guard who had been selected to accompany him. In this way, wouldn't it be putting personal interests above public ones?
