Chapter 130 New Year's Day
Xiao Fubao's voice attracted everyone's attention.
Especially Old Mrs. Wan, she immediately understood what Xiao Fubao meant.
"Fubao, do you want to go to the town with us and look after the shops?"
Little Fubao was a little confused. She didn't know what a shop was. She just heard about lanterns and wanted to go see them. She heard her brothers talking about how beautiful the lanterns were.
"Yes." Little Fubao nodded his head quickly.
"Okay, let's take our little Fubao with us." Old Mrs. Wan clapped her hands happily, and the matter was settled.
Everyone sat for a while. Old Mrs. Wan looked at the time and saw that it was getting late. It was already midnight. The children were so sleepy that they were yawning. Little Fubao had fallen asleep in Mrs. Wan's arms.
"Okay, it's midnight, Boss, you guys go burn some incense for your ancestors and then go to sleep."
Boss Wan stood up and put out the brazier on the ground. There was a clay pot on the brazier, which was bubbling with steam and contained boiling water.
After burning incense, Wan Laoer opened the door to the main room and found that the snow outside had lessened a lot. However, it had been snowing for most of the night and when he opened the door, the snow was already higher than the threshold and completely above his calves.
Wan Laoer was a little worried, so he quickly ran out to check the roof.
There was a thick layer of snow on the roof. The wind and snow had subsided, and the noise in the village became louder.
No one was asleep yet. They all came out with ladders and climbed onto the roof to sweep the snow.
"Brother, the snow has subsided. Let's clear the snow off the roof. If it snows again overnight, the roof won't be able to hold up."
Boss Wan also ran out and took a look at the roof. "Okay, second brother, go get the ladder, and the third brother and I will get the shovel and broom."
Wan Laoer had just carried out a ladder from the woodshed and had not walked far when he saw a figure walking towards him on the snow.
"Uncle Wan, I'm here to sweep the snow for you. You don't have to come up here. It's dangerous."
Wan Xingmo was seen standing on the roof with a broom in his hand, his body standing steadily on the ridge.
"Thank you, Mo'er. You have to be careful." Boss Wan looked up with a hint of worry in his eyes.
"Don't worry, just go inside. The snow is a bit thick, don't let it hit you. Leave these to me."
Wan Xingmo stood on the roof and shouted loudly to the people below. Although the snow had stopped, the wind was still very strong. As soon as his voice came out, it was blown away by the wind. If he didn't shout loudly, it wouldn't be heard at all.
Boss Wan gave Wan Xingmo a few more instructions, but not knowing whether he heard them or not, he quickly hid in the house.
Wan Xingmo finished sweeping the snow off the roof in less than a quarter of an hour.
The next morning, Zhao brought her family to pay New Year's greetings to Mrs. Wan's family.
Soon, more than a dozen women from the village came to visit, and Old Mrs. Wan had already instructed Old Man Wan to take his younger brothers to pay New Year's greetings to the village chief's family.
The women who came to visit the village were all gossipy, and Old Lady Wan learned a lot of news about Shizi Village from them.
And today brought big news.
Old Mrs. Wan only now found out that someone had died in the Shen family next door last night. This Feng was actually killed by these people from the Shen family. It was a pity that she lost her life at such a young age.
Early this morning, the Shen family wrapped Feng in a mat and carried her to the cemetery.
Someone died last night and the funeral was held this morning. This is unheard of in the entire village.
Although Old Lady Wan had a grudge against the Shen family, she would not gossip about them behind their backs. She just listened to these women talking about the Shen family with saliva flying everywhere.
Old Mrs. Wan, her daughters-in-law, and Zhao just listened with a smile but did not agree.
Because Old Lady Wan had a brazier at home, as well as melon seeds, peanuts, and candied dates, the women sat there until noon with no intention of leaving.
Seeing that there were no more melon seeds on the plate, Wan Ersao did not fill it again. The women then stood up and said goodbye.
After seeing off the villagers, Wan Ersao turned around and gave them a cold look.
"These people are so tactless. How many melon seeds and peanuts have they eaten? If it wasn't the first day of the Chinese New Year, I would have kicked them out. If I had known they were like this, I wouldn't have taken anything out to entertain them. I just heard the kid's father say that in the village, people are entertained with just a glass of water. Families with better financial resources also put some peanuts on the table, but the amount is limited and they are just for show. It's nothing like our family. No wonder these people just sit there and won't leave. It's like they haven't eaten good food for 800 years."
Wan Ersao was so angry that she fired like a machine gun.
Old Lady Wan smiled and said to Zhao: "Niece-in-law, don't mind it. My second daughter-in-law is just this straightforward person. She doesn't take anything to heart."
Zhao smiled gently, and Old Lady Wan looked at Second Sister Wan and scolded her with a smile, "How dare you criticize them? You are keeping this thing in your care. If you don't take it out, how can they steal it from you? You don't have the sense to criticize others? Those people are so poor that they can't even afford to eat. How can they afford to buy melon seeds, peanuts, and candied dates? Why are you so angry? The things were eaten by others, and you are still so angry. Now you know their morals, and it can be regarded as a lesson."
Wan Ersao collected the plates and locked all the good things in the kang cabinet. If anyone came in the afternoon, she would just treat them with a glass of water.
Zhao also took the opportunity to say goodbye and went back to make lunch. Old Mrs. Wan tried to keep her for a while but failed.
After lunch, Grandma Wan watched her grandchildren playing in the snow in the yard. Little Fubao, wearing new clothes, insisted on playing in the snow. As soon as the little guy entered the snow, he almost disappeared, and the snow covered most of his body.
Wan Ersao was at a loss whether to laugh or cry, and quickly picked up her daughter from the snow nest.
Little Fubao thought it was fun and wanted to go again, flapping his little legs.
Old Mrs. Wan quickly asked her sons to clear the snow in the yard.
There was no time to clean up in the morning, so we only shoveled a path. Now that there was nothing to do, the Wan family started a snow-shoveling campaign in the yard.
The yard was divided into several parts, and each family was responsible for one part. Boss Wan was in a playful mood. He hadn't been so happy in a long time. Ever since he married Mrs. Wan, he had been a little depressed. He seldom had the leisure time to enjoy life and family like he does now.
Old Mrs. Wan ignored the adults and children making mischief and coaxed little Fubao back to the inner room.
However, a disagreement occurred among the snow-clearing team outside.
"Brother, this is unfair. I am the only one in our four families. Aren't you bullying me? Second brother has Wanwen to help. Your family is the one that benefits the most, you have three sons."
There was a hint of resentment in Wan Laosi's eyes. He stood there leaning on a shovel and complaining angrily.
"Okay, I'll give you Wanshuang, that's fine."
A hint of success flashed across Wan Laosi's eyes, and he hurried to pull Wan Shuang.
Mrs. Wan Er and Mrs. Wan San were in the kitchen, looking out from time to time with happy smiles in their eyes.
