Chapter 14 Wolf Meat
Wan Ersao sat down on the dry grass beside the official road. The tattered bed sheet in front of her looked like a tattered piece of cloth.
Little Fubao sat obediently on the bed sheet, like a hungry baby bird.
The bundle of eggs was placed on Wan Ersao's right hand side.
Mrs. Wan Er raised her head and quickly glanced at Mrs. Wan Da. She saw that her eyes were like those of a hungry wolf, staring at her bag of eggs. Her greedy gaze seemed to shoot through the bag.
Wan Ersao's heart tightened and she quickly stuffed the bundle tightly into her arms.
"Sister-in-law, don't think about these eggs. If I remember correctly, you already secretly drank three yesterday. How dare you fan the flames? I haven't settled the score with you yet! But you come to my door instead?" There was a hint of anger in Wan Ersao's voice.
Seeing that she had missed the chance to grab the eggs, Mrs. Wan had no choice but to sit down listlessly like an eggplant hit by frost.
Mrs. Wan curled her lips and glanced at Mrs. Wan. Mrs. Liu also glanced at Mrs. Wan with a hint of sarcasm on her lips. Mrs. Wan even cursed secretly, "What a useless thing."
Old Mrs. Wan looked at the family members watching little Fubao eat eggs and realized that this was not a good way to go and she had to find a way to get him food.
Moreover, the closer they got to the border town, the more desolate the place became, and the colder the temperature became. If they didn't find a solution, they would most likely starve to death on the road.
Old Mrs. Wan looked around but didn't see any trace of the soldiers. It seemed that the soldiers were scared away by the wolves and would not be able to come back for a while.
Old Mrs. Wan's eyes turned and she set her sights on the wolf's corpse.
Old Mrs. Wan slowly moved her feet to Mrs. Wan's side, then raised her little foot and kicked Mrs. Wan's thigh.
"You lazy bastard, stop getting in my way and get out of my way."
Mrs. Wan was scolded by her mother-in-law for no reason. Although she was indignant, she did not dare to retort.
She knew very well how powerful her mother-in-law was. She was a widow who raised four sons. When she fled to Yangliu Village from famine, she relied on her own efforts to settle down in the village and took root there.
If she dared to talk back, Boss Wan would definitely beat her up.
After the eldest sister-in-law Wan left, Old Lady Wan said to the second sister-in-law Wan: "Second wife, do you think we can get some of the wolf meat over there to eat?"
Wan Ersao looked up at her mother-in-law in surprise, her face bursting with joy as she said, "Mother is amazing. I didn't think of that at the moment. Why not? I think those officers and soldiers have been scared out of their wits. They will definitely not be able to come back before dawn. Now is a good time."
Little Fubao was eating eggs with gusto. When he heard the conversation between his grandmother and mother, he quickly raised his cute little head and looked in the direction of the wolf pack with a serious face.
She pointed over there with her chubby little hand and said in a baby voice, "Meat - lots of meat -"
Old Mrs. Wan narrowed her eyes, touched little Fubao's head, and looked thoughtfully in the direction from which they had just fled in a panic.
After thinking it over carefully, Old Mrs. Wan stood up and walked towards her sons.
"Big brother, second brother, third brother, fourth brother, the rest of you come here."
Old Lady Wan took her sons to a secluded place and said in a low voice, "We are out of ammunition and food. If we continue walking like this, won't we starve to death?
The officials in the capital are more ferocious than those in the county. There is no hope if we rely on them.
Now, we can only rely on ourselves, and our only goal is to reach the border town safely no matter what.
As long as you are alive, there is hope.
Our family being together is more important than anything else.
I just thought of the wolf meat. No one will take it. Those direct descendants are pampered and will definitely not take it. Those officials are not here now. It's a good opportunity for us.
You brothers, hurry up and get some wolves back now while everyone else isn't reacting.
The boss is injured and can't do heavy work, but you have first-class skinning skills, so bring the kitchen knife from home and peel the skin right there.
After getting it back, I stewed it in the evening and sent some to the family of the boy who killed the wolf. After all, the wolf was killed by someone else.
Now we pick up ready-made meat to eat and let others see it, which is not appropriate.
There are still two or three hours until dawn. Although time is tight, we have many people, so we should be able to make it in time."
After hearing the arrangements made by Old Lady Wan, the Wan brothers immediately took action.
Boss Wan, holding a gleaming kitchen knife in his hand, followed his brothers and walked back carefully.
At first, several people were worried, afraid of being discovered, but it turned out that they were worrying for nothing. Those direct descendants lay on the ground like a puddle of mud, without even giving them a glance.
The Wan brothers quickly returned to the place where the battle had just taken place.
The brothers were horrified to see the wolf corpses all over the ground. Judging from the traces of fighting at the scene, all the wolves were killed with one knife.
Boss Wan often goes hunting and is quite knowledgeable, but it is the first time for him to see so many wolf carcasses. However, he still manages to remain calm.
"Brothers, don't waste time. Hurry up and skin four wolves first. Each of you will carry one back."
"But, brother, mother said that your injury..." Wan Lao Er looked at Wan Lao Da's back with a worried look on his face.
"It's okay. The bleeding has stopped. It's not easy to come here, so I'll transport as much as I can."
After Boss Wan finished speaking, he squatted on the ground without saying a word and started to pick and choose.
After careful selection, the four fattest wolves were finally selected.
Boss Wan quickly tied the wolf to a tree nearby and then started to skin it.
After a long time, he finally skinned the four wolves. Looking at the wolf skins all over the ground, Boss Wan was reluctant to waste them and picked them all up.
The weather was getting colder and colder, and his family was in need of warm clothing, and wolf skin was the best material.
Calculating the time, they would reach the border town in two months. It was the middle of winter at that time. It was said that the winter in the border town was extremely cold. Just thinking about it made Boss Wan shiver.
The four brothers each carried a wolf on their shoulders and held a wolf skin in their hands, and walked back in fear.
Fortunately, everything went well and no one paid any attention to them. Everyone was tired by this time.
As soon as they returned to the camp, the sharp-eyed Mrs. Wan noticed it immediately.
She was about to shout excitedly, but Old Lady Wan's eagle-like eyes had already locked onto her.
Seeing Mrs. Wan's eager look, Mrs. Wan knew something was wrong and immediately threw a clod of earth as accurately as a catapult, hitting Mrs. Wan's head accurately.
"Oh, mother, why did you hit me again?" Mrs. Wan covered her head with her hands, tears welling up in her eyes, and looked at Mrs. Wan aggrievedly.
Old Lady Wan stood up, glanced at her sideways, and said seriously, "I'm afraid you can't control your mouth and cause us trouble and money loss."
Although Mrs. Wan did not immediately understand Mrs. Wan's warning, the three sisters-in-law next to her understood it.
They smiled at each other, with a tacit understanding.
Mrs. Wan gently handed little Fubao to Liu's care, and then went over to help Old Mrs. Wan.
At this time, Liu was almost three months pregnant, but due to malnutrition, her belly was not obvious.
Old Mrs. Wan was particularly concerned about the first child of the fourth wife and was worried that there might be problems.
So on the road, she took special care of Liu and tried her best not to let Liu do any heavy work.
Just when Old Lady Wan was busy with her son and daughter-in-law, Wan Dielan, the daughter of Old Lady Wan Liu, a direct descendant of the Wan family, noticed the little movement here.
She sat up from the ground and looked at these peasants who were said to be branches of the Wan family busying about, her heart filled with contempt.
However, when she saw clearly the wolf meat in their hands, Wan Die Lan immediately became excited as if she had been injected with chicken blood, and hurriedly shook her second brother Wan Jinzhe beside her.
"Brother, brother, hurry up and look, those peasants have food to eat. They are getting meat to eat."
Wan Jinzhe felt uncomfortable being shaken by his sister, so he slapped Wan Dielan's hand away, slowly raised his head and glanced at the side branch.
I happened to see Wan Ersao chopping meat, and the men of the Wan family were making a fire and preparing to grill the meat.
Wan Jinzhe sat up from the ground instantly. He hadn't smelled meat for a month.
"You bunch of peasants, give us the meat. My nephew killed the wolf. Do you still want to pick up the ready-made meat? Are you dreaming?"
Wan Jinzhe ran up to Wan Ersao in a rage, because Wan Ersao was processing wolf meat at that time.
