Chapter 218 Visiting the County
Old Lady Wan and her companions, along with the matchmaker, arrived at the gate of the county town, and then the carriage returned the same way.
Old Mrs. Wan and her family lined up to enter the city.
While I was waiting in line, I heard people talking.
"Have you heard? The county magistrate's newly recognized sister is going to marry an old scholar."
"Where did you hear that? How dare you talk about the county magistrate's sister? Are you trying to save your life?"
"A relative of mine works for the county magistrate. He went back to visit his relatives some time ago and heard that the county magistrate really loves his sister. I heard that he bought more than a dozen slaves."
After hearing this, Boss Wan's face turned very bad. He turned around and was about to leave, but was stopped by Old Lady Wan.
"Boss, what are you doing?"
"Mother, didn't you hear? Shen is getting married. She is a scholar. We are just peasants. We are not worthy of her. Why are we going to make trouble for ourselves? We should go back quickly to avoid being humiliated by her."
Old Mrs. Wan glared at Boss Wan and twisted his arm hard.
"Why do you believe everything you hear? The person is here, and we can see each other soon, why don't you go in and ask? I have never been wrong. Shen is not that kind of person. She will never despise the poor and love the rich. Even if that is the case, it is because we have not proposed marriage yet. Are you willing to go back like this? Even if you don't propose marriage today, why don't you go and see Shen since you are here? After all, she has been in our house for half a year. If we can't be husband and wife, we can't hurt the relationship."
Boss Wan then turned back reluctantly and was dragged into the city by his mother.
"Let's find an inn to stay in first, and we'll take care of the rest tomorrow. It's not easy to come to the county town, so we can't come here for nothing. Let's see if there's anything we want to buy and bring some back."
Old Mrs. Wan made the arrangements calmly.
The eldest brother Wan followed behind the old lady Wan, carrying a bundle. The second sister-in-law Wan held little Fubao in her arms and kept looking at the small vendors on both sides of the street. The mother and daughter could not take their eyes off the dazzling array of goods.
Liu held her son in her arms, but her eyes were not idle. She looked back and forth at the exquisite goods with a look of curiosity.
"Mom, this county town is more prosperous than our town. Look at these things, they are more exquisite and beautiful than those in the town."
"Of course, let's settle down and then go out for a good stroll."
Old Mrs. Wan hasn't visited the county town for a long time. The last time she visited the county town was when Old Mr. Wan was still alive, and it has been more than ten years.
Boss Wan asked along the way and finally found a relatively cheap inn. This inn was not located on the main street, but on the street behind the main street. It was relatively quiet and the conditions were pretty good.
Boss Wan asked for four rooms in total, which cost one tael of silver for one night. Boss Wan paid the money with a painful heart, picked up his bag and led everyone upstairs.
After settling down simply, Old Lady Wan asked the matchmaker if she wanted to go out for a walk.
"Big sister, it's not easy for us to come to the county town, do you want to go out for a walk?"
The matchmaker was probably in her forties, and dressed up gorgeously. When she heard Old Lady Wan's question, she smiled and said, "I won't go. You guys go. I'm tired from riding in the carriage all the way, and I want to rest."
Old Mrs. Wan left with her daughter-in-law and son.
When we arrived at the street, it was already late and lanterns were already lit everywhere. There was no curfew at the border, so many people came out for a walk at night.
Little Fubao had slept well along the way. Now she was in high spirits, looking around with bright eyes. Suddenly she saw a little rabbit, a living little white rabbit, with a snow-white body and eyes like rubies, locked in a bamboo basket.
"Mom, bunny, I want bunny."
Mrs. Wan Er took one look at the little white rabbit and found it very cute, so she pulled little Fubao over. Little Fubao squatted down and wanted to reach out to touch the little white rabbit.
"Little kid, this rabbit can bite you, so you have to be careful." The stall owner reminded little Fubao with a simple smile.
Little Fubao was so scared that she quickly retracted her hand and looked at the little white rabbit timidly. She didn't understand why such a cute rabbit could bite people?
"Mom, I want a little bunny, I want a little bunny."
Wan Ersao smiled and touched Xiao Fubao's head, then looked up and asked, "How much is this rabbit?"
"Sister-in-law, this rabbit is cheap, only one hundred coins. Rabbits are easy to raise and can give birth to rabbits. They can give birth to a litter in two months."
"One hundred coins?!" Wan Ersao thought it was a bit expensive. She remembered that when Wan Lao Da shot wild rabbits in his hometown and sold them in the restaurant, they only sold for a few dozen coins. It was obvious that this man wanted to cheat them because they were from outside the area.
But little Fubao was staring at the little rabbit, and Mrs. Wan couldn't bear not to buy it for her.
"Fifty cents."
Wan Ersao gritted her teeth and returned half of it.
The honest man immediately got angry and waved his arms to chase people away: "Go look somewhere else, I don't sell it here, go buy it for 50 cents."
Wan Ersao was ashamed and angry. How could this man be like this? He raised the price and bargained on the spot. Isn't this normal? She was just bargaining for a price, and the man drove her away. Wan Ersao was also a little angry.
"Boss, just forget it. I don't think you can sell this rabbit."
Wan Ersao was not polite either. She picked up Xiao Fubao and prepared to leave, but was scolded by the man: "Hey? Who are you? The deal failed, why are you cursing my business? Apologize."
Just when the man was persisting, the little rabbit suddenly ran out of the cage for some reason and disappeared into the crowd in the blink of an eye.
The man was furious and asked the people next to him to help watch the stall. He hurried to look for her and had no time to bother Wan Ersao.
Mrs. Wan burst out laughing and whispered to Mrs. Wan, "He was so ruthless. Now the rabbits have all run away. Won't they be unable to sell them?"
Old Mrs. Wan also felt that the people in this county were too unscrupulous. It seemed that she would have to compare prices before buying anything.
"My dear, let's go to the front and have a look. Maybe there are rabbits for sale. Mommy will buy some for you, okay?"
Xiao Fubao nodded obediently. She had just heard the man yelling "Mom", which showed that he was not a good person. She didn't want things from bad people.
Mrs. Wan Er gave her daughter a big kiss on her chubby little face, and the group continued shopping.
In the end, they bought a little rabbit, which only cost them sixty cents. Little Fubao was very happy, and Wan Ersao was also very happy. They spent forty cents less, which was enough for them to buy twenty meat buns.
It happened that no one had eaten dinner yet, so Wan Ersao bought ten big meat buns and a roast duck, sat down at a roadside wonton stall, ordered a bowl of wontons for each person and started eating.
They only had one piece of dry food at noon. Now everyone was very hungry. Little Fubao ate a roast duck leg, half a bowl of wontons and half a big meat bun by himself. His little belly was so full that he kept burping.
After dinner, everyone went for a walk again. Wan Ersao bought a peach wood hairpin, Liu bought a bracelet, and Wan Ersao also bought a headband for Old Lady Wan.
The few of them then returned to the inn and brought meat buns and roast duck to the matchmaker.
As soon as Xiao Fubao and Wan Ersao entered the room, they saw a white thing on the table.
Wan Ersao was startled and her scream attracted Wan Lao Da and Wan Lao Tai.
When they got closer, they found that it was actually a little white rabbit!
