Chapter 26 Dead Rat
Inside the dilapidated temple, there were snoring sounds like thunder, one after another, and the fire at the door was dying and slowly going out.
Except for two officers and soldiers who stayed behind to keep watch, the rest of them wrapped themselves tightly in quilts and fell asleep on the ground in a place sheltered from the wind.
Wan Laoer couldn't suppress his inner restlessness after all, and he got up and walked out quietly.
Two soldiers were dozing off against the door when Wan Laoer passed by them. The soldiers keenly sensed the presence of someone and when they opened their eyes they saw Wan Laoer walking out in a stealthy manner.
"What are you doing?" The soldier raised his eyes and glanced at Wan Laoer.
Wan Lao Er lowered his head quickly and said, "Sir, I have to pee urgently. I want to go to the bathroom."
"Are you trying to get away or are you trying to escape? Why are you sneaking around?" The officers and soldiers kept on asking and shouting.
"Sir, I was afraid of disturbing the two gentlemen's sweet dreams, so I was a little gentle."
Wan Lao Er's humble appearance made the officers and soldiers feel more comfortable, so they said, "Then go quickly. I'm telling you, don't think crookedly."
Wan Lao Er said quickly, "I dare not, I dare not, sir, even if you give me a hundred courages, I still would not dare to do it."
Wan Laoer finally got out of the dilapidated temple as he wished and headed straight for the southeast corner of the yard.
He turned around to glance at the soldiers and saw that they were dozing off with their eyes closed again, not paying any attention to him. He quickly lowered his head and scratched.
With the help of the bright moonlight, he finally saw clearly that it was sweet potatoes, and there were so many of them that they covered a corner of the yard.
Wan Laoer found a stick nearby and started digging.
While digging, he looked back at the soldiers. Seeing that they were not looking at him at all, he felt a little relieved.
A quarter of an hour later, Wan Laoer finally dug out a sweet potato from under the sweet potato vine.
The sweet potatoes are not big, only about the size of an adult's fist, but there are so many of them, which is a real surprise.
There are actually seven or eight fruits under this plant!
Wan Laoer hurriedly picked up the sweet potato, stuffed it into his arms, pretended to hug his arms to keep warm, and walked back with his head down.
He thought to himself that if he was stopped by the soldiers, he would be exposed.
He felt very uneasy until he walked into the dilapidated temple and saw that the officers and soldiers didn't even look at him. Only then did he feel relieved and breathed a long sigh of relief.
After returning to Old Lady Wan, Wan Laoer gently placed the sweet potato in his arms on the ground. Even though his movements were very gentle, they still startled Wan Xingmo.
"Uncle Wan? Why haven't you rested yet?" Wan Xingmo's voice was a little hoarse, his eyes were hazy, with a hint of moisture. He no longer had the coldness of the day, but had a hint of the innocence of a teenager.
Wan Laoer tiptoed to Wan Xingmo and handed him the sweet potato he had dug as if he was presenting a treasure.
"Young master, look at what this is?" Wan Xingmo took it in his hand and looked at it carefully, and found that it was actually sweet potato, which was quite common in the military camp and very easy to identify.
"Sweet potatoes? Where do you get them?" Wan Xingmo looked up at Wan Laoer in surprise.
Wan Lao Er moved closer to Wan Xingmo and lowered his voice and said, "Young Master, these sweet potatoes were found in the southeast corner of the yard, and there are still quite a few there.
But I was discovered by soldiers when I went out just now, and was unable to bring all of them back.
I plan to get the rest early in the morning." Wan Xingmo glanced at the two soldiers at the door, his eyes flashed, and he said, "Uncle Wan, I'm afraid those sweet potatoes won't be yours tomorrow morning. You must dig them all back tonight."
Wan Xingmo unconsciously glanced at the little girl who was sleeping in Wan Ersao's arms. He always felt that the good luck of Uncle Wan Er's family was related to this little girl. It was always a good idea to prepare more food on the road of exile, and the sweet potatoes tasted much better than steamed corn bread.
Wan Xingmo thought about it and made a prompt decision. He must dig them all back tonight to avoid any trouble. There are so many people here and they might be dug away if they are seen by someone who gets up at night.
"But those soldiers at the door are not easy to deal with. If I go out again, I will be exposed." Wan Laoer looked embarrassed.
"Uncle Wan, don't worry, I will lead the way for you. Just follow my gestures." As soon as Wan Xingmo finished speaking, he was like a nimble cheetah, and in a few flashes, he was at the door.
He pointed his fingers at the two soldiers like a gust of wind. The soldiers' heads tilted slightly and they fell into a deep sleep.
Wan Xingmo turned around and waved gently towards the darkness. Wan Laoer quickly grabbed the empty grain bag beside Wan Laotai and moved out carefully step by step, as if he was stepping on the edge of a knife, for fear of waking up the sleeping officers and soldiers inside.
After the two arrived at the yard, Wan Laoer asked excitedly: "Young Master, you are really amazing, but those two officials..."
"They are fine. I just turned on their sleeping pills to make them sleep for a while. Don't worry."
Wan Laoer heaved a sigh of relief after hearing this. With Wan Xingmo's help and a sharp sword in his hand, he had collected all the sweet potatoes in less than quarter of an hour and filled half a bag.
Wan Laoer was as happy as a child who got the candy he had always longed for. Just when his little Fubao had finished his food, he got some sweet potatoes, which were just right for his little Fubao to have as a snack. The cooked sweet potatoes were sweet and soft, and little Fubao would surely love them to bits.
Just as the two were about to go back, Wan Xingmo's brows suddenly frowned. He grabbed Wan Laoer, hid him in the corner, and covered Wan Laoer's mouth tightly.
Just as the two of them hid themselves, they saw several men in black quietly landing in the dilapidated yard like ghosts.
Wan Laoer was so frightened that his face turned pale, his pupils contracted violently, and his legs trembled like sieves.
Wan Xingmo's eyes were as sharp as an eagle in the dark night, staring coldly at the man in black.
As soon as the men in black landed on the ground, they gestured to each other and dispersed in different directions like cunning rabbits, surrounding the ruined temple tightly. No matter where the people inside came out from, they would become their victims.
Wan Xingmo let go of Wan Laoer, who fell to the ground with beads of sweat on his forehead.
He never thought that he would be assassinated!
He was just an honest farmer who had been dealing with fields all his life. He would never have thought that such a thing that only appeared in storybooks would happen to him.
Wan Laoer couldn't help swallowing and began to worry about his family inside.
But at this moment he didn't even dare to breathe, for fear that any movement would alert those ghostly men in black.
But if he doesn't act, his family will be harmed.
Wan Laoer is ready to sacrifice himself and lure the assassin away so that his family in the ruined temple will be safe.
Wan Xingmo: You think too highly of yourself. I guarantee that you won’t even be able to step out of the yard.
Just as Wan Lao Er was daydreaming, Wan Xingmo suddenly flashed and whispered, "Uncle Wan Er, stay here and don't move. Wait until I lead the people away before you leave."
Before Wan Laoer could answer, he felt a gust of wind blowing by his side, and Wan Xingmo, holding a long sword, soared into the air like a bird.
He didn't even have to make any noise on purpose, as the men in black immediately spotted the dark figure leaping out of the broken wall.
The men in black immediately turned their spears around and chased after Wan Xingmo like poisonous snakes.
Wan Laoer tried hard to calm his panicked mood, then he carried half a bag of sweet potatoes and walked into the dilapidated temple.
He placed the sweet potato in the hole under the statue, but he had no desire to sleep. He sat against the shrine, exhausted, and worried about Wan Xingmo's safety.
Those men in black all looked very skilled. Wan Laoer felt anxious and subconsciously grabbed a handful of things on the ground.
"Ah——" Wan Laoer caught a dead mouse without any bias.
He screamed, and although the voice was short and low and did not alarm other people, it did alarm Wan Xingchen.
Wan Xingchen sat up from beside Zhao and glanced at Wan Laoer who was leaning against the shrine.
"Uncle Wan? Is that you?" Wan Xingchen asked in a low voice, then looked around and noticed at first glance that his eldest brother Wan Xingmo was missing.
Wan Xingchen's originally dizzy head suddenly became extremely clear.
Wan Laoer threw away the dead rat in his hand, feeling unlucky.
The country man had seen many mice, so he was not very scared. It was just that he suddenly touched a furry thing in the dark, which gave him goose bumps.
When Wan Xingchen asked at this moment, he hurriedly bent down and moved closer.
"Second Master, why are you awake? Did I wake you up? I don't know when a rat died and it scared me."
Wan Xingchen was relieved to see that Wan Laoer was safe and sound. He glanced at the abandoned rat on the ground. Although Wan Xingchen's internal strength was not as good as Wan Xingmo's, it was much stronger than Wan Laoer, who was an ordinary person.
He could tell at a glance that the rat was quite strange and seemed to have died of poisoning.
To be on the safe side, he stepped forward and kicked the rat with his foot. After turning the rat over, he found that it was foaming at the mouth and had just died.
Wan Xingchen's family was repeatedly assassinated along the way, which made him wary of any abnormal phenomena.
Wan Xingchen hurriedly pulled Wan Laoer to ask, "Uncle Wan Er, where did you find this rat?"
Wan Laoer was puzzled as to why Wan Xingchen was so interested in a dead rat, but he still pointed to the place where the dead rat was found.
Wan Xingchen hurried over and fumbled under the shrine, then pulled out a steamed bun.
Wan Xingchen's face turned pale as paper in an instant. This steamed corn bread... could it be poisonous?
