Chapter 28: Wan Lao San's wound festering
The dilapidated temple was extremely noisy, filled with the shouting and cursing of officers and soldiers.
The first thing Old Lady Wan did when she got up was to feel the bag of steamed buns beside her, but she found nothing. She was so frightened that she broke out in a cold sweat and quickly looked around for it.
"Mom, are you looking for this?" Wan Laoer handed the bag in his hand to Wan Laotai.
Old Mrs. Wan snatched it away as if it were a treasure, opened it hastily to check, only to discover that a steamed bun was missing.
"Second brother, you are such a grown-up, why are you still following your elder sister-in-law's example of cheating? You are really a failure."
Old Mrs. Wan's face fell and she slapped Old Man Wan on the back lightly.
Mrs. Wan, who had been innocently implicated, looked at Old Lady Wan with a bewildered look on her face, only to see that Old Lady Wan was holding a bag of steamed corn bread in her hand.
Mrs. Wan's stomach was churning with greed. She stared at the steamed bun in Old Mrs. Wan's hand, drooling uncontrollably.
After waking up from a nap, she felt sore and painful all over, and her stomach was growling with hunger. She had no intention of getting up at all.
"Mom, you have wronged me. It is not what you think. Please listen to me carefully. Don't you know what kind of person your son is?"
Wan Lao Er looked at Wan Lao Tai with grievance.
While the mother and son were arguing, Wan San's wife pulled Wan Er's wife aside.
The place where Wan Laosan was whipped yesterday was now red and swollen, and the surrounding muscles were hard and a little swollen, with obvious signs of suppuration.
But there is no doctor here, and if the wound becomes festered, the consequences will be disastrous.
Wan San's wife found Wan Er's wife and lowered her voice and said, "Second sister-in-law, can you help the child's father find some herbs? I see that his arm seems to be festering. If his arm is disabled, how will our family live in the future?"
When she thought of the border getting closer and closer, Wan Sansao shuddered in her heart.
Not only is the environment there terrible, but the neighborhood relations are also terrible.
I heard that these exiles would be gathered in one place, which was full of murderers and arsonists.
Wan Ersao was just about to take Xiao Fubao out to relieve herself, so she said, "Don't worry, Third Sister-in-law, I'll go check it out right away. I also want to take Xiao Fubao out to relieve himself."
"Second sister-in-law, leave Xiao Fubao to me. It's inconvenient to find medicinal herbs while you hold him in your arms." Third sister-in-law Wan said as she was about to reach out to take it, but Second sister-in-law Wan dodged away.
"Don't worry, Third Sister-in-law. I'm here. You just stay here and take care of it. We need someone here too. We need to pack our things. We'll be on our way soon. Fourth Sister-in-law is not feeling well. Big Sister-in-law..."
When Wan Ersao mentioned Wan Dasao, she couldn't help but pause and glanced at Wan Dasao. She saw that Wan Dasao was humming and it was obvious that she couldn't expect Wan Dasao to help with anything.
Mrs. Wan Er held Xiao Fubao in her arms and had other thoughts in her mind. With Xiao Fubao around, she felt that she would definitely be able to find the herbs.
Mrs. Wan San felt that what Mrs. Wan Er said was right. She finally told Mrs. Wan Er to be careful and watched her walk out.
"My dear, can I take you to the bathroom first? Then I'll find some herbs to heal your uncle's wounds so he can get better soon."
Little Fubao immediately opened his mouth, revealing two rows of small teeth. His chubby little face had obviously become thinner in the past two days, but his eyes seemed bigger and brighter, and he was giggling at Wan Ersao at this moment.
"Ah——" Little Fubao kept waving his little arms, responding to Wan Ersao's words excitedly.
Such a young child can actually understand what Wan Ersao said, although she can't speak yet and can only express it with "ah ah".
Wan Ersao brought little Fubao out to the yard. Looking at his bare little butt, she felt filled with guilt.
We traveled all day and all night, and it was already dark when we arrived. We didn't have time to make a pair of pants for little Fubao. We couldn't keep going like this.
I must make a pair of pants for little Fubao today no matter what.
After little Fubao finished using the toilet, Wan Ersao quickly wrapped him up with a bed sheet.
The closer we get to the border, the colder it gets in the morning.
Little Fubao is still so young. If he catches a cold, it would be fatal.
"My dear, let's go find some herbs to treat your uncle's injury, okay?"
"Ah——" Little Fubao shouted excitedly, with a string of small bubbles coming out of the corners of his mouth. He crossed his two chubby little hands and clasped them together, and then put them to his mouth and nibbled on them.
Wan Ersao felt so distressed when she looked at the child that her heart was broken. The child must be starving, but there were no eggs at home, and the dried meat was too hard and was not suitable for little Fubao to eat.
Wan Ersao was so worried about this that she couldn't sleep for half the night.
Just when Wan Ersao's face was full of worry, she unknowingly walked into a patch of weeds.
Suddenly, there was a noise. Wan Ersao was startled. When she looked closely, she found that it was a big colorful pheasant.
When the pheasant heard the noise, it immediately flapped its wings and flew away.
She hurried to chase it, but failed to catch up. She looked down and found a pile of white pheasant eggs in the grass.
"Oh my god! This is really what I wanted! So many pheasant eggs, enough for little Fubao to eat for several days!"
Wan Ersao was extremely surprised and immediately looked around nervously. Seeing that no one had left the courtyard of the dilapidated temple, she quickly squatted down and counted them. Unexpectedly, there were more than a dozen people.
However, despite her surprise, she found that she seemed to have nothing extra to pack the eggs back.
She looked around as usual and saw a soapberry tree in the woods not far away.
This soapberry tree is at least ten years old, and its trunk is covered with hard soapberry thorns.
Wan Ersao suddenly remembered that her father once said that soapberry thorns can not only reduce swelling and discharge pus, but also kill insects.
With this, the third brother’s injury is not a big problem.
Wan Ersao plans to stock up more soapberry thorns in case of emergency.
Judging from yesterday's situation, it seems that the officers and soldiers have already targeted their family, and someone might get hurt on the way.
With these soapberry thorns, you can stop bleeding and reduce swelling, which is very helpful for external injuries. The method of use is also very simple. Just grind them and sprinkle them on the affected area.
Wan Ersao was overjoyed. Without any hesitation, she immediately picked up little Fubao and returned to the dilapidated temple.
After Wan Ersao left, the people in the dilapidated temple got up one after another, packed their bags and prepared to set off at the urging of the officers and soldiers.
Old Mrs. Wan finally found out that Old Man Wan had done two big things last night. One was that he found poisoned steamed buns, and the other was that he got half a bag of sweet potatoes.
Both of these things made Mrs. Wan tremble with fear, but fortunately, her heart was no longer so fragile after being tempered along the way.
However, these sweet potatoes had to be hidden. Once discovered by the officers and soldiers, they would surely be robbed and whipped. It would be impossible for her to hand them over voluntarily.
At this time, Old Mrs. Wan was walking with her small feet, busying herself behind the statue.
She had so many things to hide, including the sweet potatoes and the dried meat she had hidden yesterday.
We need to think carefully about how to hide these things.
Old Mrs. Wan glanced at the stretcher and was secretly delighted. Fortunately, her sons were honest and made a stretcher that was comfortable and spacious enough.
Old Mrs. Wan had an idea in mind and she whispered to her sons, directing them around.
After a lot of trouble, the food was finally hidden. It looked seamless and flawless.
Wan Jinshu was lying on the stretcher, feeling somewhat embarrassed, while Wan Laoer kept stuffing things into his side.
After Old Mrs. Wan had saved enough dried meat for the two families to have in the morning, the food finally didn't take up so much space anymore. Only then did she realize that she had quite a bit of food at home.
She thought that all this must be thanks to Xiao Fubao, and then she realized that Wan Ersao had not returned yet.
Old Mrs. Wan looked outside and saw Mrs. Wan hurriedly walking in with little Fubao in her arms.
