Chapter 388: Boss Wan interrogates Liu Dabao and becomes suspicious
Because the village chief didn't know at the beginning that there was another secret behind Chen's death, the scene was severely damaged and there was basically no useful information. The only information he could get was from the children in this family.
Among the four children of the Liu family, Guihua is the oldest, but she had been sold long ago. She was definitely not at home on the night of the incident. The only one who could provide useful information was Liu Dabao, and then there was Shaoyao. Although Shaoyao was only four years old, children could not lie, and the information they gave could sometimes be the key to solving the case.
Boss Wan walked over to Liu Dabao and squatted down, but Liu Dabao couldn't help shrinking his neck and clenching his little hands into fists. It was obvious that he was very nervous.
"Dabao, I'm your Uncle Wan. I have a few questions for you. Just answer truthfully. Don't be afraid." Boss Wan looked at Liu Dabao and thought of his eldest son, Wan Quan. Back then, because of his disagreement with Sister-in-law Wan, he didn't care much about Wan Quan, which led to the bad relationship between him and Quan'er now. Moreover, the fate of the two children is similar, which made Boss Wan feel a little sympathetic.
Liu Dabao then slowly raised his head. His little face had turned pale with fright and his body couldn't help shaking.
"Dabao, can you please get up first and let's talk aside?"
Boss Wan directly picked up Liu Dabao from the ground, but Liu Dabao's legs had completely lost all feeling from kneeling for too long, and he could not stand at all. As soon as Boss Wan let go, Liu Dabao's body fell to the side.
"Be careful!" Boss Wan quickly reached out and grabbed him.
Guihua stood at the gate of the yard and watched Liu Dabao's reaction. Her guess was confirmed. She was almost certain that Chen's death was related to Liu Dabao. But how did he do it? Why did he kill Chen? What good would it do him if Chen died?
Guihua racked her brains but couldn't figure out a clue, but she felt that there must be something hidden. She must have overlooked some important information and didn't get it from Shaoyao yesterday. But now it was obviously too late. She secretly worried for Liu Dabao.
Boss Wan helped Liu Dabao walk to a corner, and Guihua quickly ran into the house to bring in two square stools.
"Uncle Wan, you've worked hard. Come sit down and talk."
Boss Wan glanced at Guihua, nodded, and took the stool.
Guihua quickly placed another stool under Liu Dabao and helped him sit down.
Liu Dabao calmed down a lot because of Guihua's arrival. He swallowed unconsciously, sat down slowly, and his body stopped shaking.
Seeing that she had nothing to do, Guihua prepared to leave and go back to the house to look after the two children, but Liu Dabao suddenly grabbed her wrist, his eyes full of pleading, "Sister, stay with me, I'm scared."
A mysterious look flashed across Guihua's eyes. She hesitated to speak, and finally looked at Boss Wan and asked, "Uncle Wan, am I okay here?"
"It's okay. Dabao is scared. If you stay with him, he will be able to recall more."
Guihua stayed there and listened to Boss Wan asking Liu Dabao some questions about the case.
"Dabao, when did you find out your mother was dead?"
"It was probably around 10 p.m. the night before yesterday," Liu Dabao recalled.
"Then how did you find out your mother was gone?"
"That night, I was half asleep when I heard my mother calling me. When I went to see her, I found that she was still motionless. I called her, but she didn't respond. Then I realized that my mother was dead."
Guihua couldn't help but frown. This was exactly the same answer he gave when the village chief asked him, as if he had memorized it in advance. And it was completely different from what Shaoyao said. Dabao was lying, but she didn't expose him.
"Did you hear any other noises? Like someone coming in?"
Liu Dabao was obviously nervous. After all, the person questioning him this time was a police officer, not the village chief. Liu Dabao couldn't answer fluently. He was nervous and stuttered when he spoke.
"I...I seemed to hear something, but...but I thought it was a wild cat, so I ignored it."
Boss Wan saw that Liu Dabao was very nervous, so he smiled and comforted him: "Dabao, don't be nervous. We just want to find out who the murderer is and give your mother justice as soon as possible. Don't you want to catch the murderer as soon as possible?"
Liu Dabao was so scared that he quickly lowered his head. After all, he was still young and couldn't be completely foolproof.
"Well, I also hope to find the murderer as soon as possible and give my mother justice."
Liu Dabao's voice was muffled and tearful, as if he had been suppressing it for a long time.
Boss Wan patted Liu Dabao on the shoulder and sighed. He knew that life would become even more difficult for these children in the future, but they had to get on with it no matter how difficult it was.
"Dabao, when you got up, didn't you notice anything different in your mother's room?"
Liu Dabao shook his head. "No, the room is too dark. Our family is poor and mother usually doesn't allow us to light a lamp."
This is indeed true, and Boss Wan also knows it. After all, poor families don’t have money to buy lamp oil. They go to bed as soon as it gets dark just to save some lamp oil.
"Okay, uncle got it. Has anyone suspicious come to your house to get information these past two days?"
"No, I have been keeping vigil for my mother these past two days. Except for the village chief uncle who brought the villagers to keep vigil the night before yesterday, no one else has come."
"Okay, go take a break and call your brother and sister."
Liu Dabao was obviously extremely nervous, and he quickly looked up and asked, "My brothers and sisters are still young and don't know anything. They can't tell me any useful information. If you have any questions, just ask me."
Only then did Boss Wan feel that there seemed to be something wrong with Liu Dabao. He couldn't help but narrow his eyes and look at Liu Dabao.
This sight frightened Liu Dabao so much that he lowered his head.
After a moment's silence, Wan Lao Da asked, "Da Bao, I just looked around your house. There is not a single grain of rice in your rice jar, and there is a layer of dust. It is obvious that you have been out of food for some time. How did your family of four survive these days?"
"Uncle Wan, I was the one who secretly helped them. I used my wages to buy steamed buns and eggs from Second Aunt and secretly gave them to my younger brothers and sisters. That's why they survived." Guihua quickly explained.
"That means you only gave it to your brothers and sisters-in-law, and didn't give it to Chen?"
Osmanthus shook her head, "No."
"Then how did Chen get by these days?" Boss Wan's voice was obviously more majestic than before, and he looked at Liu Dabao with a scrutinizing gaze.
Once he had doubts in his mind, Liu Dabao's behavior just now seemed a little abrupt.
