Chapter 4 Catching Fish
Wan Ersao's heart was hanging in the air, and was immediately pulled to the root of her tongue by Wan Sansao's scream.
"Mom, can you help me look after Xiao Fubao? I'll go see what's going on."
Mrs. Wan's face turned pale and her heart was pounding as she handed little Fubaoer to Old Mrs. Wan.
"Okay, go quickly, don't worry, Xiao Fubao, I'll be watching over you."
Old Mrs. Wan also looked towards the direction of the stream worriedly. Little Fubaoer sensed that Old Mrs. Wan was a little anxious and immediately hugged her neck.
"Come on--"
Old Mrs. Wan was brought back to her senses by the baby voice of little Fubao. She lowered her head and met little Fubao's big, twinkling eyes. Little Fubao instantly calmed down Old Mrs. Wan's anxious mood.
"My dear grandma, I'm fine. With Fu Baoer here, nothing will happen."
Little Fubao opened her pink little mouth and called out "Ah-ah-ah" twice, then nestled obediently in Old Lady Wan's arms. She was so hungry.
A large group of people had gathered by the stream at this time. In addition to the injured Boss Wan and the lazy Sister-in-law Wan, even the children came running over.
"What is this?!" Wan Ersao looked at the pile of white fish on the ground, covered her mouth in surprise, her eyes full of disbelief.
Wan Laoer was still throwing fish onto the shore. The smallest one weighed one kilogram, and the largest one weighed four or five kilograms. There were already more than a dozen lively fish on the shore.
"Boss, why didn't you shout when you found the fish? I was worried that you were poisoned by the official's blood."
When Wan Er's wife saw that Wan Laoer was not only fine but also caught a lot of fish, her worry turned into surprise and she couldn't help but blame Wan Laoer.
Wan Laoer didn't know what happened after he left, so he quickly straightened up and made a gesture to keep quiet.
"Hush, all of you keep your voices down. If the official finds out, we won't be able to eat a single fish. The adults are so hungry that they want to eat the children. What about the children?"
Wan Laoer's words, which were full of implications, scared the several Wan family boys who were watching the fun, so much so that they immediately hid behind their mother.
"Boss, what are you talking about? Look how scared the child is."
Wan Ersao's face darkened, and she quickly lowered her head to comfort her son Wan Wen: "Son, don't listen to your father's nonsense. We will have pheasant stewed with fish later. We will make sure you are full."
"Pheasant? Where did the pheasant come from?"
Wan Laoer asked as he threw a fish in his hand onto the shore.
Wan Ersao then told the story of what happened after Wan Laoer left.
"Since we've caught so many fish, can we keep some for ourselves later?"
Wan Lao Er asked excitedly.
The hearts of the other members of the Wan family immediately heated up. Without even rolling up their pants, they jumped into the water to catch the fish.
Several boys from the Wan family also wanted to go down, but were stopped by Wan's second and third wives.
"You guys just stay on the shore. Although it's hot this afternoon, it's already autumn. It's still cool in the morning and evening. You can't do anything rash. We are not like at home without a doctor."
Wan Ersao gave stern instructions.
Mrs. Liu from the Wan family stared at the fish being served with shining eyes, and her little hand couldn't help but touch her flat belly.
Wan Ersao saw this and walked over to Liu and said softly, "Fourth brother's sister-in-law, I'll ask Third sister-in-law to make you some fish soup later. It's a pity that you and the fourth brother have only been married for half a year, and you just got pregnant when you were implicated by the Wan family in the capital and exiled. It's really hard for you."
Liu lowered her head and listened to what Wan Ersao said. Her eyes were sore and the grievances she had felt for a month finally burst out at this moment.
Big tears jumped out of her eyes and dripped in front of her body, and her soft sobs gradually turned into a burst of tears.
Wan San's wife also hurried forward to comfort her, "Fourth brother's wife, don't cry. The sisters-in-law all know that it's not easy for you on this journey. You can eat one more bowl later and eat the child's portion as well, okay?"
Liu was moved by the thoughtfulness of her two sisters-in-law. She finally smiled and nodded: "Well, thank you, second sister-in-law, thank you, third sister-in-law."
"Well, we are a family, why are you being so polite? Your second sister-in-law and I will help you process the fish. You can sit down and take a rest. A pregnant woman cannot stand the smell of fish."
Liu's heart was slowly warmed by these streams of warmth, and she deeply realized that as long as the family is united and friendly, there is no obstacle that cannot be overcome.
The three men in the water listened to the conversation between the women on the shore. Wan Laosi looked up and glanced at Wan Ersao and Wan Sansao with gratitude.
How could he not feel sorry for his wife? They had been married for only a few months and were in love, but he was exiled. He felt guilty towards Liu, but there was nothing he could do.
Now the love and care his family showed to Liu has somewhat made up for his debt to her.
Under the big tree, Boss Wan was sweating because of his back injury. The wound stung by the sweat was red and swollen, and it was painful and itchy. He felt so uncomfortable that he wanted to reach out and scratch it.
Mrs. Wan was lying under a tree, her stomach growling with hunger, and she was as motionless as a rotten salted fish.
She didn't even move her eyelids when she heard Boss Wan's snorting coming from the side.
Old Mrs. Wan couldn't bear it anymore, so she stretched out her little foot and kicked Mrs. Wan hard.
Mrs. Wan screamed after being kicked and got up.
"Mom, why did you kick me?"
"Your man is injured, but you don't take good care of him. You just sleep there. You won't even get a share of the stewed chicken later."
Old Mrs. Wan knew that her eldest daughter-in-law was lazy, greedy, and selfish, so she used food to bully her.
Sure enough, Mrs. Wan immediately became depressed and said with a smile, "Mom, I didn't hear the boss yelling. I'll take a look."
After Old Lady Wan finished cleaning up Sister-in-law Wan, she closed her eyes and took a rest. Little Fubao was so well-behaved that he didn't move, which made Old Lady Wan feel less worried.
When Mrs. Wan saw Old Lady Wan close her eyes, her face immediately darkened. She walked to Boss Wan in a huff and rudely lifted up his clothes.
But the clothes had already stuck to the wound, and because of Mrs. Wan's actions, secondary damage was caused, and Mr. Wan gasped in pain.
"You stinky woman, what are you doing? Are you trying to murder your husband?"
Afraid that Mrs. Wan would hear it and get angry with Sister-in-law Wan again, Boss Wan scolded her in a low voice.
"I didn't mean it. You know I can't take care of people. Your second brother's wife is a doctor and she didn't even bother to help you, the eldest uncle, get some herbal compresses. It would have helped you get better faster. It shows that you, the eldest uncle, don't have much prestige and no one takes you seriously."
Boss Wan didn't want to listen to Sister-in-law Wan stirring up trouble, so he waved his hand weakly and drove her away.
"Stay away from me, I'll be fine soon, get out of here."
Mrs. Wan was in a happy and relaxed mood. She stopped hanging around Mr. Wan and Mrs. Wan and prepared to find a secluded place to sleep. Her eyes happened to fall on the pheasant eggs that Mrs. Wan had just picked up.
There were six or seven white pheasant eggs placed on the Wan family's bag.
Mrs. Wan turned her head to look at Old Mrs. Wan and Old Mr. Wan, and saw that they were both resting with their eyes closed. Only Little Fubao was looking at her.
Mrs. Wan looked at Xiao Fubao threateningly. Xiao Fubao really disliked Mrs. Wan and felt that there was an uneasy aura about her, so he quickly shrank his head.
The soldiers were roasting rabbit meat, and the aroma of the meat made Mrs. Wan's stomach growl.
She no longer hesitated. Even if she was beaten by Old Lady Wan, she would not be allowed to vomit out what she had eaten.
Mrs. Wan squatted down gently, turned her head from time to time to look at Old Mrs. Wan, reached out to grab an egg, cracked it directly on the ground, and quickly put it to her mouth.
He opened his big mouth and sucked the whole egg into his mouth, swallowing it with a gulp.
"Wow, the eggs are really delicious, but they're not as big as the eggs at home."
Mrs. Wan said something in a low voice, with a hint of disgust, and reached for the second egg.
After drinking three eggs in one breath, Mrs. Wan finally felt her heart no longer burning.
Just as her hand reached for the fourth one, she was startled by a voice.
"Sister-in-law, what are you doing?"
Mrs. Wan Er and Mrs. Wan San were walking back with the packed fish. As soon as they turned around a big tree, they saw Mrs. Wan Da's hand reaching for the pheasant eggs on the bag, and there were a few egg shells beside her.
The voice of Wan Ersao woke up Old Lady Wan and Old Brother Wan.
After seeing the situation clearly, Old Mrs. Wan lowered her head, picked up a clod of earth from her side and threw it at Mrs. Wan's back.
It hit Mrs. Wan right on the back, causing her to scream "ouch" in pain and jump up from the ground.
But Mrs. Wan did not run away. Instead, her eyes were attracted by the fish in the hands of Mrs. Wan's second and third sisters.
"Fish! So many fish!"
As Mrs. Wan said this, she was about to grab him, but Mrs. Wan's second and third sisters-in-law dodged to the side.
The officers and soldiers also heard Mrs. Wan's scream. Boss Zhu glanced over and saw the fat fish in the hands of the two men.
Boss Zhu handed the roasted rabbit to Yongzi to take care of, and walked towards Wan Ersao and Wan Sansao.
After hearing Sister-in-law Wan's scream, Sisters Wan Er and Wan San both looked in the direction of the officers and soldiers.
Sure enough, after hearing what was said, Boss Zhu walked towards them. The two men immediately grabbed the fish in their hands tightly, their faces turned pale, and they unconsciously stepped back.
