Chapter 57: Mummy

Chapter 57: Mummy

The house-searching team searched the rooms next to where everyone lived one by one, but found nothing.

Most of the houses in the village were crushed by the snow and had become a pile of ruins. Nothing useful could be found.

After searching for about an hour, I finally saw a house that was larger than the one at the entrance of the village and had a more solid structure. This house turned out to be a brick house.

It can be seen that the owner of this house must be a wealthy family in the village.

The main house is a large tiled house with four rooms and a large courtyard. There are three rooms on each side of the courtyard. The right side should be the kitchen and woodshed, and there is also a cattle shed.

But they are all low thatched houses.

Wan Xingmo went straight into the woodroom and finally saw the room full of dry firewood. Wan Xingmo breathed a sigh of relief.

He had been thinking all the way. If he really couldn't find any dry firewood, he planned to carry the beams of the collapsed houses back and split them with Wan Laosan's tools to use as firewood. Now that he had found so much dry firewood, he didn't need to go through so much trouble.

Li Zuo took two other officers and soldiers into the upper room and walked around. They found that the furniture in the room was quite complete. Although it was not too new, there was nothing damaged.

"Gangzi, go to the west wing and see if there is anything we can use. We won't look anywhere else. This is probably the best house in the village."

"Yes, Brother Li."

As soon as Gangzi and another soldier pushed open the door of the west wing, a shadow flew towards them in an instant.

Gangzi screamed in fear and sat down in the snow pit at the back. Just then another soldier stopped him from behind.

It was already dark, and the vision was a little blurry.

"Shitou, did you see what that was just now? A shadow that looked like a person."

Shitou was behind Gangzi and had no way of seeing what was happening in front of him. When he heard what Gangzi said, a sense of panic arose in his heart and he dared not approach the west wing.

"Gangzi, don't scare me. You know I'm timid. There's no one in this village. How could there be a human figure? I didn't even see a ghost."

After Shitou finished speaking, he suddenly felt a chill all over his body and a chill on his back.

Gangzi's screams did not alarm Wan Xingmo and Li Zuo. One of them was in the upper room and the other in the kitchen. A strong wind was raging outside, and the roaring sound seemed to devour people alive.

"Shi Tou, my legs are a little weak, help me up quickly."

Gangzi stretched out his hand, but the stone did not move.

Gangzi looked up and realized that it was not his illusion. The shadow appeared again and kept swaying on the door, causing the door panel to swing back and forth and make a creaking sound.

Shitou was so frightened that he held his breath, his mouth open, and his hands and feet were out of control, as if he had been cast under a spell.

Gangzi pulled Shitou's legs to get up from the ground, and slapped himself and Shitou's face hard to wake them up.

"Shitou, are we dazzled?"

"It seems not..." After being slapped by Gangzi, Shitou's mind became much clearer and the fear in his heart dissipated a little.

"Let's go and take a look. I don't believe there are any ghosts in this world. They are just people pretending to be gods." Gangzi swallowed his saliva and drew his sword, holding it across his body.

Shitou followed closely behind, one step away from Gangzi. He was a well-known coward among Gangzi and his friends.

Gangzi tightly grasped the long knife in his hand and moved towards the door step by step. The door panel was swaying in the strong wind, and the shadow appeared and disappeared with the swaying of the door panel.

"Are you a human or a ghost? Get out here and don't play tricks in front of me. I'm not afraid of you." Gangzi felt his legs shaking.

But his threats were instantly swallowed up by the strong wind and were completely ineffective.

Gangzi was filled with anger, and he shouted loudly and kicked the door open.

The door panel was not very strong to begin with and was kicked to the ground by Gangzi.

"Come out!" Gangzi still pointed his knife at the shadow behind the door and shouted loudly.

But the only answer he got was the howling of the north wind.

"Gangzi, is that not a human? Should we go call Brother Li to take a look?"

Shitou grabbed Gangzi's clothes tightly, glanced away, and did not dare to open his eyes to look at the ground.

"You coward, watch how I kill the ghost."

After Gangzi finished speaking, he chopped the door panel with his knife, but it only left a mark on the door panel, and the dust on the ground was also raised high.

"Ahem - Gangzi, can you do this?"

"What the hell are you talking about? My wife says I'm capable, how dare you question me?"

"That's not what I meant, you..."

Before Shitou could finish his words, he was shocked by Gangzi's actions. He screamed and flipped the door panel over.

The things behind the door panel were finally visible at this moment.

"Oh my god! It's a ghost!" Shitou took one look and then screamed, crawled out of the west wing and ran to the upper room.

Gangzi finally saw clearly what was behind the door panel.

I saw a dried corpse hanging on the door panel, and it looked like it had been dead for several months.

Because of the unique climate in the northwest and the fact that there has been no rain for a long time, the body has become a mummy.

Judging from the mummy's sparse hair, this should be an old lady, because the few remaining hairs are all white.

Gangzi turned the mummy over, and in the faint light of the snow he saw a face covered with deep wrinkles crisscrossing like ravines.

The eye sockets were sunken, the eyeballs had long disappeared, leaving only two black eye sockets.

The skin on the neck and hands was tightly attached to the bones, revealing obvious tendons and bone structure. The whole body appeared surprisingly thin, and one could almost feel the sharpness and hardness of the bones.

Gangzi looked at this horrible mummy, and although he felt a little chill in his heart, he was much calmer than before when he didn't know what the other party was.

At this time, Li Zuo and Wan Xingmo all gathered here. As soon as they entered the door, they saw Gangzi facing a dried corpse, with his chin supported by two fingers, and his face was deep in thought.

Wan Xingmo entered the house first, and used the sword in his hand to flip the clothes of the mummy, and said: "This should be the owner of this house. He was reluctant to leave his hometown, so he chose to hang himself. Because of the strong wind and sand here, he became a mummy."

"Yes, I think so too." Gangzi stood up from the ground and glanced at Wan Xingmo.

"Okay, if there's nothing else to do, let's go back quickly and separate the people. Don't tell anyone about the death here when you go back. Gangzi, bury the body quickly. Since we're using someone else's house, we have to help out and don't disturb the old man."

"Yes, Brother Li." After Gangzi said that, he carefully picked up the mummy and walked out of the yard.

Shitou still didn't dare to follow Gangzi. He stood far away at the door, not daring to go in.

After hastily burying the corpse, the group hurried back.

It took another quarter of an hour to get back to the village entrance. By then, it was completely dark. Fortunately, the wind and snow had finally subsided a bit, and the visible area had also become much larger.

After returning to the stone house, Li Zuo directly divided the people into two groups. In one group, Li Zuo took all the men to live in the big tiled house over there, and in the other group, Xiang Yang took Wan Xingmo to protect the women and children in the stone house.

When they came back, Wan Xingmo and his group brought a lot of firewood, so they could light the kang tonight.

After a two-month long journey, everyone was excited to finally be able to sleep on a kang.

But tonight is destined to be a restless night.
