Chapter Seventy: Putting the cart before the horse

Zheng's mother was clearly taken aback; she obviously hadn't expected Jiang Moli to say such things to her in such an uncharacteristic way.

"Jiang Moli!" It was always Zheng's mother who bullied Jiang Moli. When had it ever been Jiang Moli's turn to speak to her like that? No matter where she was, she immediately shouted at the top of her lungs, "Is this how a daughter-in-law should act? Is this how you talk to your mother-in-law?"

In terms of shamelessness, Jiang Moli couldn't even compare to a fraction of Zheng's mother. As Zheng's mother deliberately roared, attracting many people to look in their direction, her face immediately turned red.

"Lily." Just as Jiang Moli's face grew hotter and her head drooped lower, her hand was grabbed and a familiar voice reached her ears, "I've been waiting for you for a long time, why did it take you so long to come?"

The reproach in her tone was only meant for Zheng's mother. When Xu Moran looked at Jiang Moli, half of her eyes were filled with heartache and the other half with anger.

She felt sorry for Jiang Moli having such a domineering and unreasonable mother-in-law; she was angry at Zheng's mother for taking advantage of her age. Jiang Moli was, after all, her own daughter-in-law and family. Her mother's loud and disruptive behavior in public showed her no respect and was both hurtful and infuriating.

The moment Zheng's mother saw Xu Moran, she stopped her veiled insults directed at Jiang Moli.

Furthermore, upon hearing what Xu Moran said to Jiang Moli, she assumed that Jiang Moli had come to the police station because of Zheng Heping's matter. Her face, which had been gloomy and almost stormy just moments before, instantly brightened.

Her wrinkled face broke into a smile as she said to Jiang Moli, "Moli, you and Miss Xu have a good chat. I won't disturb you any longer."

As he spoke, he turned to go downstairs to continue guarding his son, who was still in the interrogation room.

She had just turned around when she heard Xu Moran say to Jiang Moli, "Lili, didn't I ask you to buy me a rainbow cake? Why are you empty-handed? Have you forgotten?"

Jiang Moli's eyes were already red from being mocked and ridiculed by Zheng's mother in front of so many people. She sniffed and looked at Xu Moran with eyes that were about to cry, "Ranran, what a load of rubbish..."

"I'll go buy it, I'll go buy it right away!" Before Jiang Moli could finish speaking, Zheng's mother interrupted her halfway.

"Jasmine, you keep Miss Xu company while I buy the cake. Miss Xu, is it a rainbow cake?" Even though Zheng's mother heard everything clearly, she still asked Xu Moran in a deliberately ingratiating manner.

Her attempt to please Xu Moran wasn't genuine; it was the kind of groveling one has to bow to when under someone else's roof. Once Zheng Heping left the police station, and once he found an opportunity, even if he wanted to turn the page on what happened at the police station, his mother wouldn't agree.

She was born weighing 8.2 pounds. She raised her son with great difficulty, by having affairs with many village chiefs and enduring the scorn of all the women in the village. Her son must not be bullied like this.

Zheng's mother went off to buy a cake with great enthusiasm. Seeing her running pace, Jiang Moli said to Xu Moran with concern, "Ranran, isn't it a bit inappropriate to lie to her like this?"

Xu Moran's expression and tone were indifferent. "Doesn't Zhenzhen love rainbow cake the most? How can it be considered cheating her if Grandma buys it for her granddaughter? Let's go to my office."

When Xu Moran arrived at the office, she was about to pour water for Jiang Moli and do some more ideological work with Zheng's mother before she returned, when someone knocked on the door and walked towards her.

The person who came was none other than Xiao Chen from the interrogation room, who was the first to ask Xu Moran for help.

He came to Xu Moran with a piece of paper in his hand. "Officer Xu, look, this is the portrait of the man who beat him up last night, as Zheng Heping mentioned."

When Xu Moran looked at it, he saw that the man had very handsome features and was indeed a strong and powerful man, as could be seen from the portrait.

Jiang Moli glanced at the portrait unintentionally, and upon seeing it, she instinctively exclaimed, "Ah!"

Xu Moran looked at her, "Lily, do you know the person in the portrait?"

To make it easier for Jiang Moli to see, Xu Moran placed the portrait in front of her.

Now, Jiang Moli could see it clearly. Although the portrait was just a rough computer-generated image based on Zheng Heping's description, Jiang Moli was still very certain that she recognized the person in the portrait.

We made love many times last night. He was energetic and skilled. Before she left, she left all eleven yuan she had on her on the bedside table. Is he the kind of man who leaves her without even enough money for a bus fare?!

Even though Xu Moran is her best friend and closest confidante, there are some things she still can't let her know. It's not that she doesn't trust her, but rather that she finds it difficult to talk about them.

Feeling embarrassed, she pointed to the man in the portrait and told Xu Moran that she knew him.

Xu Moran is an orphan without parents, while Jiang Moli is a pitiful person with a father but no mother. Their shared fate made them inseparable from the first day they met. Therefore, Xu Moran knew as well as Jiang Moli how many friends she had and what kind of friends they were.

If she says she knows the man in the portrait, Xu Moran will inevitably press her about when she met him and what their relationship is.

She wouldn't necessarily tell the truth and actually tell Xu Moran that she only met this man last night, and that their relationship was just that of a casual sex partner who would go their separate ways at dawn.

Putting aside Xu Moran's reaction, she herself despised herself.

After what happened last night, what right does she have to play the victim and condemn Zheng Heping for his infidelity in their marriage?

"Even if you're evenly matched, the pot calling the kettle black" perfectly describes her and Zheng Heping's current situation.
