After putting down her teacup, Fang Min looked at the front of her desk, where a photo framed a picture of a family of three—herself, Du Fangyun, and Fang Wei.
Du Fangyun was his second wife after his first wife passed away. Before he became a minister, she was a well-known television anchor in China. In recent years, she has retired from the public eye and enjoys the treatment of a department-level cadre.
Fang Wei was Du Fangyun's son. Like many children of officials, he was sent abroad at a young age to gain experience. After returning from his studies abroad, he was supposed to be given a sinecure in a government agency.
Given the Fang family's current power and status, they could easily provide for generations. Fang Wei wouldn't need to achieve anything significant; he could simply take a quiet job and earn some extra money. However, under Du Fangyun's indulgence, Fang Wei became addicted to the vices that are easily picked up by the second generation: eating, drinking, gambling, and whoring.
One night while drunk, he hit and killed someone with his car and fled the scene. When the police caught him, he was sleeping with a popular actress.
During her statement, the actress insisted that she was in the hotel room because Fang Wei had kidnapped her there. She claimed she was forced into it, that she was innocent, and tearfully begged the police to help her.
Fang Wei, always arrogant, nearly beat up the police chief, fueled by the remaining alcohol in his body.
Fang Min received a call from Du Fangyun and rushed to the police station. Fang Wei had already been released from the station. When he saw him, he called out to him, his leg shaking, "Dad."
Fang Min almost rushed up and slapped him. His carefree and irresponsible attitude, like that of a spendthrift and good-for-nothing, made him furious.
Before he could even step forward, Du Fangyun had already started complaining to him, "I really don't know how you became a minister. Something that could have been solved with just a phone call, you made me have to pull strings."
Fang Min's fear of his wife is common knowledge among those who know him. In front of Du Fangyun, he neither hit nor scolded Fang Wei, but just gave him a fierce glare.
Fang Wei was still a little afraid of her, so he tugged at Du Fangyun's sleeve and pleaded, "Mom, I don't want to be a civil servant anymore. Staying in the office all day, either reading the newspaper or surfing the internet, is too boring."
"Son," Du Fangyun said gently, "being a civil servant isn't bad, it's easy and stress-free."
Fang Wei said defiantly, "Of course it's not good. I'm so young, it's no fun hanging out with a bunch of old men. Mom, I want to start a business. How about you give me some capital and I'll go into business?"
"Start a business?" Before Du Fangyun could speak, Fang Min, who had been holding back for a long time and was on the verge of exploding, finally burst out, "With your looks, you want to start a business? I think you're..."
"Speak up, why don't you continue!" Fang Min swallowed his unfinished words when he caught a glimpse of Du Fangyun's instantly furious face. Du Fangyun, however, had no intention of letting him off so easily. She glared at him angrily, her tone aggressive.
"Fangyun." Fang Min changed her previous anger and coaxed Du Fangyun gently, "Don't be angry. I was just trying to scare Xiaowei. After all, it's true that he hit and killed someone and fled the scene, and it was caught on camera. We should keep a low profile for now."
"Fang Min!" Du Fangyun's voice suddenly rose several octaves. "So what if you hit and killed someone? I don't think it's a big deal. Is it worth you being so hesitant and scared like this? Xiao Wei, don't be afraid. Your mother is here. Since you don't want to be a civil servant and want to do business, let's go into business!"
Because of Du Fangyun's words, Fang Wei really started a business. Over the years, Fang Min has never cared how well Fang Wei's business has fared.
In fact, with Du Fangyun around, he didn't need to worry about anything at all.
The old saying "a doting mother often spoils her son" is vividly illustrated in Du Fangyun's case.
On another front, the people above him have been quite unstable in recent years, and there have been many rumors circulating. Du Fangyun doesn't know what she's afraid of, but her desire to control him has become stronger and stronger.
Du Fangyun was eavesdropping on his phone calls, and he knew that, so he already knew about the call Fang Bingnan had just made.
If Du Fangyun were truly as well-educated, gentle, and virtuous as she appears on camera, she wouldn't have secretly agreed to marry Xiao from B City twenty years ago.
