Chapter Twenty: A Succinct Remark

Because she grew up in an orphanage without a home, Xu Moran was particularly warm and attentive to anything that could bring her warmth, even a single lamp. This was especially true of a living, breathing person who could radiate warmth and speak to her.

She stared at the man, as if seeing a sliver of warmth in the cold wind, and unknowingly became mesmerized.

"Xu Ye." The man finally lifted his eyelids and looked at Xu Moran. "That's a nice name."

Xu Moran suddenly met the man's eyes, felt a pang of panic, quickly looked away, and gave a soft "hmm".

For some reason, when Xu Moran heard that the man didn't object, her heart, which had been uneasy for a while, suddenly calmed down.

Now that she had figured out that the dog that had wandered into her house was a Golden Retriever, known as the "gentleman of dogs," and had already adopted it, Xu Moran was ready to get down to business. The Ningchang Police Station was waiting for her to give a detailed account of how the thief was caught last night, and she needed to get there quickly.

It is said that the thief was not alone; he had accomplices. He probably had already planned what he would say if he were caught, otherwise he wouldn't have admitted to breaking and burglary in the middle of the night yesterday, only to change his story today.

Many citizens have been victimized, but not a single one has dared to stand up and point it out. We are all just ordinary citizens, and we are afraid that the thief will seek revenge or something, which would be terrible.

And so, the important task of providing evidence fell on Xu Moran's shoulders.

Given Xu Moran's straightforward and chivalrous nature, even if she weren't a police officer, she would still go to the police station to testify.

Now that Xu Moran's home is no longer just hers, it's necessary for her to tell the rest of her family before going out. This actually caused some trouble, as the man insisted on going to the police station with her.

His reason was too simple: Xiao Mei, the large male golden retriever with a feminine name, had broken into the house that morning, eaten his fried eggs, drank his milk, and then ate his eight-yuan bowl of Lanzhou noodles with an extra ten yuan for beef. It still hadn't gone to the toilet.

“It must be really uncomfortable holding it in. I’ll take it out for a walk and let it take care of its business,” the man said to Xu Moran.

Xu Moran glanced at Xiaomei. Perhaps because she wasn't a zoologist and it was her first time spending so much time with a dog, she really couldn't tell whether Xiaomei was uncomfortable from holding her pee.

"Let's go." Seemingly noticing her hesitation, the man not only fastened the leash for Xiao Mei, but also tidied Xu Moran's bangs.

Could you please stop making such heartwarming gestures all the time? Xu Moran's face suddenly flushed even more.

As they went downstairs, Xu Moran walked behind, while the man—no, for now we can call him Xu Ye—walked ahead with Xiao Mei.

As soon as Xu Moran stepped down the stairs, she heard a loud argument coming from the first floor. There were men questioning and women refuting each other.

This is a middle-aged couple who live on the first floor. They argue every few days, and sometimes they even fight. Xu Moran has lived here for three years and is often woken up in the middle of the night by the sound of their arguing or fighting.

Xu Moran also had some opinions about this, but since they were neighbors and it was a private family matter between the couple, she didn't feel comfortable saying anything.

Xu Moran disliked arguing. The sharp female voice sounded like it was going to rupture her eardrums, making her very uncomfortable. She quickened her pace downstairs, wanting to get out of the building as soon as possible so that it would be quiet.

As soon as she reached the last staircase, she heard the familiar male voice. Wasn't he going to accompany her to Ningchang Police Station and walk the dog along the way?

How can they have the time to mediate a fight?

She listened intently, making sure she hadn't misheard. The man she had temporarily named Xu Ye appeared to be taking Xiao Mei downstairs first, but in reality, he went off to meddle in other people's business once he got to the first floor.

Having lived there for three years, she knew a bit about the residents of the building. For example, the couple on the first floor who were always arguing: the husband was a truck driver who would only come home about once a week, while the wife was a full-time housewife who took care of the children.

The conflict between the two stemmed from the fact that one night, the man returned home without informing the woman beforehand. It is said that although the woman did not catch the man in bed, she found a pair of men's underwear in the blanket that was not his.

The man was furious, insisting that his wife had cheated on him. He said he worked so hard driving all day for the family and the children, and his wife was just staying home and cheating on him.

For the vast majority of men in this world, regardless of their nationality or skin color, they don't like green hats.
