Chapter 170 Fear and Anxiety

Xiaomei couldn't stop thinking about the dog in the back seat of the car, even though she didn't even know if it was male or female.

"Xiao Mei." Xu Moran patted Xiao Mei's head. "Let's go."

Xiao Mei let out a disappointed whimper and walked away with her head drooping. Just how disappointed was she? She didn't even want to sniff the trash can anymore.

Xu Moran thought for a moment and comforted it, "Xiao Mei, what if that dog was a male like you? Wouldn't that be a joke?"

Xiao Mei seemed to understand Xu Moran's words, looking at him with an expression that said, "Even if it's male, I'll still like it."

Xu Moran was both amused and exasperated, and continued forward while holding onto the leash.

Suddenly, Xiao Mei, who had finally calmed down, started to stir again. Xu Moran followed its direction and ran forward. Soon, she saw a dog on the side of the road.

The dog looked at Xu Moran and Xiao Mei with a blank expression, clearly frightened by something.

Fortunately, Xu Moran had good eyesight and recognized the dog at a glance as the same dog that had been in the car earlier.

Was it because of her and Xiaomei that its owner took his anger out on it and kicked it off the car?

Xu Moran felt incredibly soft-hearted when he saw the dog's pitiful appearance. Since it wasn't a dog he was familiar with, he didn't dare to approach it rashly. However, Xiao Mei, being of the same kind, quickly ran to the dog's side.

With Xiaomei around, taking that dog back home will be so easy.

Judging from the scene of the two dogs getting along well, the one must be the female dog, which makes it convenient for Xu Moran to take it back first.

Xiao Mei, though a dog, transcends species and demonstrates through her actions what it means to forget your mother once you have a wife.

It ran home with its mother dog, who was a little smaller than it, and Xu Moran had no choice but to follow.

However, she was still worried that the dog's owner might come back for it, so she would turn around and look every three steps. Unfortunately, she had already walked to the entrance of the community, but she did not see the dog's owner return.

The face she had seen not long ago floated into her mind, and she could still feel her eyelids twitching.

That woman, who was about the same age as her, did indeed look very much like her.

Did her biological parents leave her with a twin sister or younger sister in this world?

Xu Moran thought this way, but deep down he felt that such a possibility was impossible.

It's a coincidence, isn't it? There are so many people in this world, there are always people who look alike but are not related by blood.

Ahead, Xiao Mei walked quickly with her dream girlfriend, not allowing Xu Moran to look back frequently. After all, they were two rather large dogs, and she didn't want to scare anyone. She had to catch up and tighten the leash.

Xu Moran was unaware that the person she kept turning around to look at but couldn't see was sitting in her car making a phone call, and her car hadn't gone far, stopping at a corner not far from Xu Moran's apartment complex.

As soon as the call connected, she yelled at the person on the other end, "What's going on? Why am I seeing Xu Moran again? Didn't you tell me a long time ago that she was dead?"

Xu Moran was the only nightmare she had ever experienced in all her years. The person on the other end of the phone knew what her only concern was when she followed the deputy back then, and had assured her more than once.

She promised not to let Xu Moran live. She trusted her own grandmother so much, and for so many years, she had always thought that Xu Moran was long dead.

It was as if Xu Moran had never existed in this world, and there was only Zhang Yuanyuan.

She is the only niece, and she has been enjoying everything from the age of five until now without any qualms.

But just now, she actually saw Xu Moran with her own eyes, a living Xu Moran.

No one but her knew how she felt the moment she saw Xu Moran's face—surprise, shock, fear, terror, and a mix of indescribable emotions instantly combined, causing her hand holding the car keys to tremble slightly.

Why is Xu Moran still alive?

Why is the person who is most likely to threaten her wealth and status and turn her from a princess back into Cinderella still alive?

Why is she still living in fear?

Before I could even recover from the shock, the dog in the back seat started whimpering. It had been locked in the car for a long time and couldn't hold it in any longer; it needed to get out and relieve itself.

Little did it know that its owner was in a bad mood and kicked it out of the car before driving away. This is why Xu Moran ended up picking up the female dog.

The person on the other end of the phone sighed deeply after hearing Zhang Yuanyuan's questioning. "Yuanyuan, do you think Grandma doesn't want to kill her? It's just that she's too lucky and has escaped several times. Now, she's even a police officer. Grandma is so old, what can she do to her?"

The implication is that there is no other way.

Zhang Yuanyuan gritted her teeth and said fiercely, "I don't want to hear any of this. Do you want me to just watch everything that has become mine over the years be lost all at once? If that happens, wouldn't all the surgery I've had on my face over the years, all the pain and risks I've endured, have been for nothing!"

To avoid being exposed, Zhang Yuanyuan has undergone numerous surgeries over the years, based on photos sent by her biological grandmother, resulting in her current face.

She had no idea what her original face was, or what she actually looked like.

She disliked her face at all—it was neither surprising nor attractive, and it couldn't even be called pretty. Yet, Fu liked her appearance very much, saying that she looked a lot like Huiwen. If she wasn't afraid of arousing the old lady's suspicion, she would have gone for plastic surgery long ago.

On the other end of the phone, the orphanage director, who had been retired for several years, comforted Zhang Yuanyuan, saying, "Good child, none of your worries are valid. Xu Moran is Xu Moran. She's just an orphan who doesn't even know who her parents are and grew up in an orphanage. Besides, think about it, she's just a junior police officer now. There's no way she could run into the deputy. They're not on the same level. They'd never meet in their entire lives!"
