Chapter 53

"What are we having for dinner today?" The little kid, who was not even as tall as an adult, was holding onto the edge of the table, his legs hanging in the air. He opened his mouth slightly and swallowed a little. He asked in a baby voice, "Is there any meat?"

The adult came out of the kitchen with dishes in his hands. He smiled and said, "There is meat and rice soup."

The little kid shouted excitedly: "There's meat! Meat!"

"You can't eat until mom comes back." The man put the dishes on the table. There was no need to worry about the food getting cold too quickly in this weather.

He glanced at the clock hanging on the wall in the living room, and sure enough, when the hour hand and minute hand overlapped and both pointed to twelve o'clock, there was a knock on the door.

The man quickly opened the door and asked curiously, "You didn't bring your key?"

The woman at the door smiled at him while carrying bags in her hands: "My parents went shopping, and they gave these to me."

Their children are too young, the women have to work, and the men do odd jobs while taking care of the children, so they don't have time to rush to buy.

The parents on both sides are relatively young and still in good health, so they volunteered to buy the tortillas. Now there is not a single tortilla left in the house.

But instead, the rice buckets are filled with plump grains of rice, the boxes are filled with bacon and sausages, and the shelves are filled with vegetables and fruits.

The cupboards are also filled with condiments and spices.

The old people in my family always like to say that days like these are like going back to the time before zombies appeared.

The woman didn’t know what the world was like before the zombie outbreak, but those days were indeed the best days in her life since she was a child. Although the work was tiring, there were delicious meals when she returned home.

Although the child is naughty occasionally, he is obedient most of the time.

Although her husband's cooking was not delicious, it was not so bad that she had to redo the meal.

Besides, what more could one ask for than having a hot meal at home? Before, the whole family would sit together and eat corn tortillas.

"What's for lunch today?" The woman handed the bag in her hand to her husband, picked up the child who rushed towards her, and kissed the child's forehead with a smile.

The child shouted, "Braised spareribs! And potatoes!"

The woman looked at her husband and asked, "Did you go to the supermarket this morning?"

The husband touched the back of his head and said, “I queued up last night.”

It's too late to go this morning, and it might be evening by the time we buy anything.

Although the supermarket has been open for a month and many people no longer queue up 24 hours a day to buy things like before, there are still more people going there during the day than at night.

Woman: "It's better not to go at night. It's too dark and there are no street lights nearby."

“No matter how safe the situation is, you still have to be careful.”

Man: "I know, I know. Let's eat first."

There is no electricity at the base most of the time, except during the New Year and other holidays, when only the factory has electricity.

Therefore, fresh meat cannot be stored in this weather. If you bought it yesterday and left it overnight, it will go bad today.

So you have to go to the supermarket to buy it on the same day.

"There are drinks in it." The man picked up the bag and found a large bottle of orange juice inside.

The woman laughed and said, "Doesn't my dad know that you like to drink?"

The man's eyes turned red. He blinked and said, "Let's eat. I'll go see if I can find a job this afternoon."

The woman waved her hand and said, "Don't worry. It's hard to find a job now. If you can't find one, you can stay at home and take care of the children. Now there is a supermarket, and my income alone is enough to support the family."

The factory still uses corn tortillas to settle their wages. Although the exchange price of corn tortillas in supermarkets has dropped - from fifty to thirty-eight, but compared with the price of rice at two dollars and fifty cents, rice is almost free.

Not only can she support her own family, she can even support her parents.

The man whispered, "We still have to be careful. What if the supermarket is closed one day? We have to earn more tortillas while the supermarket is still open and exchange them for more food."

"By the way," the man said as he took the bowl, "I saw someone using corn flour sold in supermarkets to make cakes and exchange them at the supermarket."

The woman stopped washing her hands and asked curiously, "Did he change it?"

The man nodded: "But I heard him say that the exchange price is different from the exchange price of the base tortillas."

"The tortillas he made were only worth nineteen, half the price of a base tortilla."

The woman was a little confused: "Did he succeed in taking advantage of this loophole or not? I remember that corn flour in the supermarket is quite expensive."

Man: "It's a success. After deducting the cost, he can earn more than half of the profit from each tortilla."

"Then you can do it too." The woman said, "Since the supermarket didn't say no and accepted his money, we can definitely do it too."

"You earn money to go to the supermarket and change your house anyway, so isn't making tortillas just right?"

The more the woman thought about it, the more she felt that this was a good idea and a good business: "Before other people react and not many people are doing it, you can make more money."

"Think about it. Before, the tortillas at the base were worth fifty dollars, but now they are only worth thirty-eight dollars. When more people make tortillas to earn the difference, the price may drop from nineteen dollars to ten dollars. By then, the profit margin will be even lower."

Woman: "Although it can only make a quick buck, it's hard to find a part-time job now, and you have kids at home, so you can't go out and work part-time."

"No matter how I think about it, I think this deal can be done."

"Then I'll try it. I'll go queue up again in the afternoon and buy some more corn flour." The man also smiled.

In the past, when the child was young and needed to be left alone, I didn’t think there was anything wrong with him staying at home.

But now that the child is older, he needs adult care less and spends more than half of the day sleeping.

Children nowadays don’t need someone around them all the time, and no one knows when the supermarket will open. If you don’t stock up on more goods now, you will have nowhere to cry when the supermarket closes.

This is not the only family that plans to buy tortillas and make a profit.

For the Luoyang base which is short of jobs, no one wants to miss this opportunity to make a profit.

"General, do you really think this thing is useful?" The soldier squatted in front of the tempered glass cover, staring straight at the covered photon cannon.

The photon cannon is not good-looking - it is not big enough. Although it looks fancy, people always think that the more fancy something is, the less useful it is. No matter how you look at it, it doesn't look like something worth fifteen million.

The soldier whispered, "Is that supermarket owner trying to rip us off? This thing is just like a toy."

The photon cannon has never been tried out until now - it requires no ammunition, only sunlight to recharge, which takes a month to recharge, but can only be used once and must be recharged after use.

Right now its energy isn’t full yet, because it needs sunlight and we’re worried about it being stolen, so we have to cover it with tempered glass.

Although the anti-theft ability of tempered glass is just so-so, it is better than nothing. Normally, four soldiers are needed to take turns guarding it.

Yang Guoqin was smoking. Ever since he was able to buy cigarettes, he seemed to want to make up for the little he had smoked before. There was always smoke around him, and many people avoided him when they saw him.

"I'm just taking a gamble." Yang Guoqin sighed, "If it doesn't work out, I'll see if I can get a refund."

The soldier was stunned: "Can we still retreat?"

Yang Guoqin: "It's not a bank. It's irresponsible to speak before the money leaves the teller."

"What's more, those guns," Yang Guoqin whispered, "are all old models that have been stored in the past. They can't be used on the battlefield. We still need new ones."

The soldier frowned: "How can it be useless?! We are so short of ammunition!"

Yang Guoqin: "How long can a gun be in service? What we lack is bullets and medicine, not guns."

Guns can be used for a long time and can be repaired if there is a problem, but ammunition is consumable and is gone after one use.

So there is a backlog of guns at each base, but not a backlog of bullets and medicine.

"I still think it's a little unreliable." The soldier hesitated. "After all, those guns are useful. If this thing is useless, we will lose a lot."

Yang Guoqin: "The supermarket can't escape again."

Soldier: "You make it sound so easy. The supermarket appeared so strangely. There must be a back-up plan. Maybe it's really a man from the future. He pressed a button and the supermarket popped out like a spaceship. What can we do to him?"

Yang Guoqin smiled and said, "People from the future will be even better. Think about it this way. If they are people from the future and are using photon cannons to fool us, why don't they use precious metals and use those guns that are considered old-fashioned here? Are they cheating others and themselves?"

The soldier thought about it and it seemed to make sense, but he still sighed and said, "I always feel uneasy."

Yang Guoqin ignored him and said to himself: "I don't know when the next wave of zombies will come."

He wanted to see the power of the photon cannon, but was afraid that the zombie tide would come too quickly and he would not be able to wait until the photon cannon finished charging.

"But it's like Chinese New Year in the base these days!" The soldier was excited. "Every household can eat white rice and meat. The food in the cafeteria has also improved recently. I even had scrambled eggs with tomatoes for lunch today. I haven't eaten eggs in years."

Although the farm still raises chickens, they mainly raise roosters, which can be slaughtered for meat later.

There are not many hens, and the egg production is even less. The unfertilized eggs are usually given as benefits to farm employees.

It is hard to find work on a farm, and countless people are trying their best to get in, just for the eggs.

It's okay to work for free.

Yang Guoqin thought about it and asked the soldier seriously: "Do you think we can cooperate with the supermarket?"

The soldier was a little confused: "Cooperation on what? Raising chickens?"

Yang Guoqin nodded: "We in Luoyang have nothing. All supplies must be distributed from the rear. We can't always rely on supermarkets. If the supermarket is gone one day, we still have to live. It's not safe to buy. We still have to have it ourselves."

"We can't produce ammunition, but breeding is fine, right?"

“It’s not like there’s no open space behind the foundation.”

"Raise animals that have high yields and can be marketed quickly, such as chickens and ducks. Pigs are slow to market, so you can raise fewer."

Yang Guoqin thought his idea was a good one: "Even if they leave, the base will still have enough jobs and output."

"At least we don't have to eat tortillas anymore."

"I've had enough of that!"

"No matter what the rear will say when they find out, at least I have the responsibility to ensure that the people in the base live a good life while I am in office."

"Go talk to the supermarket owner."
