"Brother, I just found a set of high school textbooks at the scrap yard. Do you think I can skip school? Can you put my name on the list?"
Cao An lit the stove and looked up at the book in her hand. "Going to the scrapyard again? Now that there's no black market, you're going to the scrapyard instead?"
"The scrap yard isn't a big deal. I saw that old man there yesterday and he seemed quite easy to talk to, so I went to take a look, and that's when I found this." She jumped over to him and squatted down. "I saw a lot of good stuff too. Let's go check it out together someday when we're free. It's pretty cheap."
He placed his big hand on her little head. Why was she still like a child? "Just stay home. I'll take you there when I'm resting." He hadn't slept all night last night, spending the entire night in the massage chair. Finally, he could use things freely and even studied a lot of future technology.
He leaned closer to her little head and asked, "Why did you give me so much gold?" He glanced at his mother, making sure she couldn't hear him before continuing, "You can't use this stuff now. If you find it, you'll be arrested."
Xia Youyou imitated him and lowered her voice to get closer to him, "Isn't this just in case? And that piece of land, if you are in danger, throw it out immediately, it can block bullets."
"I have no use for the gold. I'll give it to you in the evening."
"Brother, I'll leave it with you first. Maybe it will come in handy someday."
Her words came true and were indeed of great use later on, but that is a story for later.
Seeing her head getting closer and closer, Cao An pushed her away and said, "Why are you getting so close? Sit further away."
"You have no conscience. You just throw it away after using it?"
Cao An was left speechless by her blunt words and continued to throw firewood into the stove. He was so hungry! He was so sleepy this morning and had no appetite. He had to sleep for a while after lunch.
"Go set the table and help Mom pass things around. Don't lean on me."
Xia Youyou obediently did as she was told and stopped clinging to him.
After the three of them had lunch, Cao An went to sleep, and Liu Hui took Youyou to the room to measure the size.
"Make it a little bigger for you. Take good care of yourself, and you should grow taller and fatter. Then it won't be so tight and hard to wear."
"I'll do as Mom says." She had no objections. She picked up the notebook and pen Mom had prepared for her yesterday and sat down at the table to write and draw. She wanted something modern and stylish without being overly exaggerated. The fabric she'd bought yesterday wasn't suitable for anything too stylish, so she decided to make a more formal shirt. A slightly slimmer waist would also look better.
She first drew a shirt and handed it to her mother, "Mom, you make this shirt first, and I'll draw the pants and jacket later."
"Oh! This shirt can be made like this? You can also draw a jacket. We have cotton, so we can make a jacket."
Xia Youyou skipped back to her room and continued painting.
She should be able to take apart her own goose down jacket and use it instead of cotton, which is both warm and light, and make two for her mother and brother.
She glanced at the time and realized it was almost time to wake Cao An. She handed the manuscript to her mother and went out of the living room to Cao An's room.
Cao An fell asleep on his bed, having not slept for two nights. He was eager to accept the new technology, and he could not forget what he had seen. His mind was full of screens of light in his dreams. He heard a knock on the door and was awakened.
"Brother, are you awake? It's 2 o'clock?"
He covered his eyes with his arms and said, "I'm awake." He forced himself to cheer up, got up and opened the door.
Seeing him like this, Xia Youyou took out a pill and handed it to him. "Didn't you sleep well? Take this to wake up your mind."
Cao An didn't care about anything else and just took it and put it in his mouth. As soon as the pill went into his stomach, he instantly felt refreshed. "Why didn't you take it out earlier!"
Xia Youyou shrugged, "You have it yourself. Didn't you check the pharmacy last night?" She didn't touch any of her mother's medicine.
Cao An was speechless. He was so focused on playing with technology that he didn't even look at the medicine column.
She looked at him with disdain, "Look at something else instead of staring at the massage chair."
Feeling the contempt of the unscrupulous sister, he pushed her out and closed the door. "Sister, it's better to be soft."
Being pushed out unexpectedly, Xia Youyou punched the door with her little fist, then shook her hand in pain. She took out a bottle of milk and drank it, hoping to grow up quickly! Thinking of his hard muscles, she was tired of envying him!
Cao An packed up and went to work. She sat beside Liu Hui, bored, and watched her make clothes. By the evening, a brand new shirt was taking shape. She took it back to her room, tried it on, and wore it out to show Liu Hui.
"Mom, that's great." That's the feeling she wanted! "Mom, you're amazing!" It's comparable to future sewing technology.
"You'll look better in this outfit if you gain some weight. But you do look a little pale. You need to be even whiter. Girls with fair and tender skin are so attractive." Liu Hui touched her thin arm and didn't ask how she had survived before. She looked at the sky outside and said, "Let's go to the black market?"
"Didn't my brother tell us not to go?" Xia Youyou's eyes lit up. With her mother accompanying her, she would definitely be able to escape Cao An's bombardment.
"Let's not tell him. Let's go see if there's any old hens and buy some to make soup for you."
"But when I went there yesterday, I couldn't find it."
"Mom knows where they are." Liu Hui smiled mysteriously. She had been to many black markets and knew they had several bases. Although she only visited this area each time, it was because it was closer.
"What are we waiting for? Let's go quickly, otherwise my brother will be back from get off work." She had to find a way to sell things on the black market again, as she had a lot of other places where she needed money.
Xia Youyou returned to her room. She had originally wanted to carry the backpack, but then decided against it. She would first find a good spot and then go to the black market to sell things tomorrow. So she only took the shoulder bag and went out with her mother.
Liu Hui led her to the main road and then to an alley to the east. After wandering around for about ten minutes, they saw the man who had closed the black market gate last time standing in front of them. He was also surprised to see them. They had come separately before, but today they were arm in arm.
Liu Hui went up to him and gestured to him. The man looked at the two of them again and let them go. She still felt a little weird.
Xia Youyou covered herself tightly, and seeing the strangeness in his eyes, she turned back and looked at him. Her big eyes looked at him with a smile. The man was stunned by the look, and felt that these eyes had some kind of magic, so he also smiled.
Xia Youyou didn't pay much attention to this little incident. She just followed her mother to the black market to see if there was anyone selling livestock. When they found a woman carrying a load on her shoulders, they squatted down to look at the poultry in her basket.
Liu Hui whispered to her, asking for the price, and gesturing with her. Xia Youyou watched curiously from the side, not interrupting. After they confirmed the price, Xia Youyou turned around to look elsewhere, to see if there was anything she wanted.
She glanced around. The black market was quiet. In a dark corner stood a man dressed in black, just like her, but tall and aloof. She looked over curiously. The man, sensing her gaze, raised his head and met her gaze.
