Chapter 49: Preparing for the New Year

The next morning, Xia You was woken up by Cao An again after a long absence. During the days he lived in the fields, he would sleep until he woke up naturally, and his mother would not wake him up. Breakfast was still warm in the pot, waiting for him to eat.

"Brother, please let me sleep a little longer. Why are you getting up so early?"

Cao An pushed the door open, wondering why it wasn't locked. Seeing she still had her head covered, he walked in and drew aside the curtains. "Look outside! The sun is burning her butt."

The light from the window blinded her. "What time is it?"

"It's already 9 o'clock. Hurry up and get dressed. I'll get you some hot water."

Xia Youyou slowly sat up and watched him walk out and close the door before she took out her clothes and put them on. When she opened the door and went out, Cao An had already entered the main room carrying hot water.

"Thank you, brother~"

"Stop acting like a spoiled brat and wash up quickly. I've been waiting for you for ages. How come you've become so lazy after not seeing you for a few days? Has mom spoiled you again?"

"No." I just slept until I woke up naturally. How could I be lazy?

"Hurry up and wash up. I'll go out and get you breakfast. After you eat, we'll leave."

As soon as Cao An came back, he arranged everything for her like an old nanny, and he cared about her more than Liu Hui.

Liu Hui also laughed, "Why are you more like mom than me?"

Cao An touched his shaved head, looking a little shy, which was unusual for him. "Really?" It seemed like he really did raise Xia Youyou as his daughter...but he refused to admit it!

Xia Youyou packed up and came out, "Let's go shopping!"

The snow on the road had almost melted, and the ground was wet. Cao An held her arm and asked her to walk on dry ground to prevent her from slipping.

However, when the two arrived at the supply and marketing cooperative, Xia Youyou's shoes were inevitably covered with some mud spots.

"Find a place to change your shoes. They're uncomfortable when they're wet."

"No need for that. You'll still get dirty when you come out. Let's go in and see what good stuff we have."

Cao An agreed to her demands and went to the clothing store first. Xia Youyou didn't like the gray clothes at all, but a beautiful piece of fabric caught her eye. It looked a bit like the celery she saw yesterday, a vibrant green.

"Brother, let's buy some fabric. I like that one! We can make it into a similar style as the aqua red one, it's sure to look great!"

"I need to buy fabrics and clothes too." He used his body to separate the crowded people and hold her against his chest to avoid touching her. He exerted great strength. As more and more people came behind him, he gradually became a little tired.

Xia Youyou noticed it and quickly said to the salesperson, "Wrap up that piece of green cloth. I want it."

After the salesperson neatly wrapped it, Xia Youyou handed over the money. "Let's go, brother." She was afraid that the two of them would be squeezed in front of the counter!

Cao An took her in his arms and walked outside. "Are you sure you don't want to buy clothes?"

After finally squeezing out of the counter, the two of them breathed a sigh of relief. "This dress isn't pretty at all, it's not even as good as the ones my mom made. I'll just ask my mom to make me one when I get home."

"Then buy some food. There are some ready-made cakes over there. Go try them and see if you like anything. There are also candies and some sunflower seeds and peanuts."

There were so many people coming to buy New Year's goods at the end of the year that the supply and marketing cooperative was probably going to be packed. The two of them finally bought everything and squeezed out of the crowd, finally breathing a sigh of relief.

"So this is the Chinese New Year!"

"That's totally unrelated. This is just before the New Year. Although we don't have many relatives at home during the New Year, we still have to visit neighbors. I'll take you out for fun and there will be fireworks." Cao An suddenly remembered this and said, "Come on, I'll take you to buy fireworks. I'll set them off for you to watch during the New Year!"

"What are fireworks?"

"I'll show you one tonight, and you'll know."

Seeing him acting so mysterious, Xia Youyou felt a little excited. They found a secluded place, put the things into the space, and then they set out again.

Cao An took him around the city, from east to west, before they found a firecracker shop deep in an alley.

Looking at the various fireworks and firecrackers in the store, Xia Youyou was also curious. She had never seen these before.

Cao An took a little of everything, and also took some flower petals that the little girl would like to play with, and then the two of them went home.

Just as they passed the alleyway leading to the scrap yard, they exchanged glances and decided to visit the old man and bring him some food. They'd already taken out the food and carried it, along with some newly purchased candy and snacks. As they turned the corner, they saw several people at the scrap yard entrance shoving the old man, nearly causing him to fall.

Cao An quickly dropped his things and ran over.

"What are you doing!"

Xia Youyou picked up her things and followed over. The person who pushed the old man started cursing at the two of them.

"Who are you? Why are you meddling in other people's business?"

Cao An steadied the old man and asked, "How is it?"

The old man waved his hand and said, "It's okay, I'm just old and can't stand very steadily."

"Who are you?" Cao An showed his ID. "Public security, I'm here to take care of this."

A few people decided they had run into a tough opponent, so they stopped pestering him. Before leaving, they threatened, "Just wait for me, old man!"

After everyone had left, Cao An helped the old man into the house, and Xia Youyou followed obediently carrying the things.

The old man sat down at the table and sighed, "What a misfortune for our family! These are my unfilial grandchildren. It's Chinese New Year and they came to ask me for things. They thought I could make a lot of money by guarding this scrap yard, but in fact, I only make a dozen yuan a month, how can I afford to give them money? I don't know where they heard that I've been eating well recently, so they came to ask for food today, and when I didn't give it to them, they pushed me." He pounded his wrist, which was pinched and hurt, and said, "I'm old!"

Only then did the two of them understand the whole story. It turned out that the food they had provided was the cause of the trouble.
