When Cao An arrived, Xia Youyou was listening to the old man talking about his past.
"So after you were cheated, that person saved you, and that's why you wanted to repay them and help them keep their property?"
"Yes. Over the years, I've inquired through various sources and learned that their entire family was exiled to a farm. They only had one baby, and in 1960, they realized something was amiss and sent him abroad. We haven't heard from him since."
Cao An stood at the door, having a strange feeling, but he couldn't figure out what was so strange about it.
"Youyou, go home."
Xia Youyou stood up in surprise and ran to Cao An, "Brother~"
Cao An rubbed her head and said, "Don't act like a spoiled child!" He really couldn't stand her tricks. He turned around and nodded to the old man.
"Uncle, I'm taking her back first. Come back tomorrow morning. If you have any trouble, come find us directly at 28 Maple Alley."
"Go ahead, be careful on the road." The old man walked to the door to see them off. "This girl is amazing. She remembered everything I taught her this morning word for word. She's very smart."
"Don't praise her, she'll get carried away."
Xia Youyou pinched his arm in dissatisfaction, and when she couldn't do it, she pinched him with her nails.
Cao An shook his arm and shook her hand off. "Let's go, sir."
The old man smiled as he watched the brother and sister walk away, then shook his head and went back to the house. He no longer expected to have children and grandchildren around him in this life. Finding the descendants of that family was his final mission.
The brother and sister ran home fighting and arguing. Liu Hui watched helplessly as they ran into the yard. "Will you two please be quiet? You're about to tear the roof off our house!"
"Mom, my brother bullied me!"
"Hey! Don't be the first to complain. It was obviously you who pinched me first!"
"What's wrong with me pinching you? It doesn't hurt you! And you hit me, it hurts!"
Liu Hui didn't want to bother with the lawsuit and went back to the kitchen to continue cooking.
Xia Youyou had no one to back her up, so she could only beg for mercy. "Cease fighting, stop fighting! I don't want to play anymore!" The difference in strength was too great, and there was no way she could do anything to him!
Cao An released her wrist and felt that she stiffened when he touched her arm. "Is your arm injured?"
"Huh? No!"
Cao An raised his eyebrows and stared at her, and Xia Youyou felt very guilty.
"It just got scratched a little bit, it's nothing."
Cao An helplessly pointed his finger at her, "What did I tell you when I left? I told you not to act so arrogantly, but you hit someone with a stun gun and even put the blame on me. You're really something, Xia Youyou!"
She lowered her head and twirled her fingers. "How could I react? He came straight at me and I had no choice but to go up and fight him."
Cao An was so angry that he almost died. He tried hard to calm down his anger. He only regretted that he hadn't beaten her harder today!
"Xia Youyou!"
The little girl shrank into a quail, her eyes staring innocently as she looked up at Cao An pitifully.
Cao An closed his eyes and turned his head away from her. "Don't do this again!"
Xia Youyou immediately beamed and jumped around him, "Brother, you're so nice! You're the best brother in the world! No one can compare to you!"
Cao An snorted coldly, hoping that he would never be slapped in the face again.
But he didn't know that the slap in the face would come so soon!
Xia Youyou followed Mr. Yan for a few days and thoroughly understood the process, and then Mr. Yan decided to leave.
"Uncle, the New Year is coming soon. You should wait until after the New Year to leave."
The old man looked at the girl's increasingly pretty face, no longer the frail one he'd seen her the first time. He handed her a piece of paper with an address on it. "This is where I used to live. If you ever come to Beijing, you can find me there. This is a house I have in the suburbs. I asked someone to look after it for me a while ago. If you go there early, you can clean it up and spend the New Year with friends. You won't feel as lonely as you do here."
After hearing what he said, Xia Youyou stopped trying to keep him and went with Cao An to send him to the work bus. Feeling the sadness of parting again, Xia Youyou's face wrinkled for the whole day.
Cao An wanted to take her out, but she wasn't interested. There was no way to comfort her; she had to let herself adjust. She'd been locked up in the base all by herself, with no friends besides her parents. Old Master Yan's departure was a bit too much for her to accept.
Fortunately, the Spring Festival is just a few days away, and Xia Youyou quickly adjusted her mentality so as not to affect the mood of Cao An and her mother.
