Chapter 57: Bonds of the Past Life

Xia Youyou lay on the straw, groaning, a dull pain in her chest. She wanted to take out a painkiller, but then she remembered that once she went to the city hospital, she would definitely need a blood test or something. If she could check the effectiveness of the medicine, it would probably arouse suspicion.

Cao An didn't dare to touch her and could only pat her head gently. He didn't care how the Red Star Brigade would deal with Zhang Yun. He just wanted the tractor to go faster!

By the time they reached Baoshi, night had already fallen. They'd been on the road all day and hadn't eaten lunch. Cao An was so anxious he couldn't eat, while Xia Youyou couldn't eat because of the pain.

After entering the hospital, Xia Youyou was carried by Cao An to lie on the bed. The doctor came over to examine her again, took blood tests, and confirmed that she had a fractured rib in her back.

The doctor bandaged her back with gauze and prescribed some painkillers. This will have to heal on its own; there's no intervention. The gauze bandage is there to prevent displacement.

Cao An asked the nurse to help watch over Xia Youyou while she was on IV drip, while he went home to tell his mother first, so as to avoid her worrying if they didn't come back all night.

When Liu Hui heard that Xia Youyou was injured, she couldn't sit still and wanted to go to the hospital with Cao An to take care of her.

"Youyou is a girl. How can a man like you take care of her? Take me there!"

Cao An had no way to deal with this and had to take her with him on his bike.

"Youyou!" Liu Hui felt so distressed when she saw the little girl lying on the bed with a pale face. How could he do this to her? After all, he had raised her for so many years. Even if there was no family affection, he should at least have a little affection for her.

"Mom, I'm fine." Xia Youyou took the painkillers and the pain was gone. It was just that her heart couldn't bear lying down. She wanted to turn sideways, but she was too embarrassed to ask her brother for help. Although she wasn't as well developed as him, there were still differences between men and women, and she wasn't wearing any clothes under the quilt.

"How could this happen? Why didn't you hide? Just let her hit you like that!"

"She was hiding behind the tree, and I didn't find her, so I got hit. Mom, help me turn over, I want to lie on my side."

Liu Hui quickly wiped away her tears and went over to help her turn over.

Cao An turned his back and prepared to go to the hospital cafeteria to get some food. Neither of them had eaten lunch or dinner, and he was very hungry now that he felt relieved.

Xia Youyou finally felt comfortable after lying on her side. The right side didn't compress her heart, and the painkillers on her back were working. She was hungry and sleepy, so she forced herself to wait for Cao An to feed her. However, by the time Cao An arrived, she had already drifted off to sleep. The painkillers had a sedative effect, allowing her to sleep through the night.

At dawn, Xia Youyou was awakened by the pain. The painkillers had worn off, and she was now in so much pain she wanted to writhe. Cao An rented a camp bed from the nurse for Liu Hui to sleep on, and he himself sat on a small stool nearby, dozing at Xia Youyou's feet. To prevent her from tossing during the night, he had barely slept. Hearing her gasp of pain, he whispered something to her.

"How is it? Does it hurt?"

Xia Youyou groaned in pain. She looked at Cao An with tears in her eyes, "Brother, it hurts~"

Cao An felt so distressed that he wanted to suffer for her. "Be good, I'll find the nurse to give you some painkillers."

She held Cao An and said, "No, I have my own painkillers."

Cao An was really at a loss for words, "Why don't you take it out and eat it?"

"I just want you to coax me!" She quickly took a pill and said, "Brother, I'm hungry!" She hadn't eaten for a day and a night.

There was really nothing I could do with her. I rubbed her furry head and said, "Brother will go buy it for you, or you can just eat some bread first?"

"Okay, then help me up first."

Liu Hui woke up while they were talking. When she heard her getting up, she knew she had to go to the bathroom urgently. "I'll do it. Anzi, go get breakfast."

"Brother, by the way, ask the doctor if I can be discharged from the hospital. It's so uncomfortable sleeping here. I have painkillers and other things myself, so let me go quickly." The whole family can have a good rest when they go back. Seeing the dark circles under Cao An's eyes, it was clear that he hadn't slept all night last night. "If you are worried, I will use the scanner to check the situation first."

"Okay. Take it out and tell me how to use it."

There were always people around me yesterday, so I couldn't find a chance to use the scanner. "Just press this button and scan from my head down. Let me see the results."

Cao An did as he was told and watched the scanner scan the entire skeleton from head to toe. He felt it was incredibly magical.

"Look. Do I have this in my space?" He has been very busy lately, and apart from playing with some electronic dogs, he hasn't paid much attention to anything else.

"Of course I do. You have everything I have. Oh, except for the one for taking pictures. I discarded it because it had pictures of my parents in it. I couldn't bear to delete it, so I kept it in my space. That's why I brought it here. My parents' things were all recycled." She thought for a moment and took out her mother's bracelet. "Here, this is for you. You can take pictures in it, too."

Cao An shook his head. "No, you've given me enough! And I don't need it."

Xia Youyou didn't force it and took the scanner from his hand.

"It's okay, the bone fracture isn't serious, and there's no bleeding in the chest cavity. There's just hematoma and bruising on the surface. It's fine now, brother. Go get discharged."

After being discharged from the hospital, Xia Youyou was carried home by Cao An, and Liu Hui followed behind pushing a bicycle.

Xia Youyou lay there comfortably, tugging at Cao An's buzzed hair and poking his eardrum. Cao An was annoyed and just let her do what she wanted.

Seeing that he didn't react, she gave up. "Brother, why don't you react?"

"You're a patient now, so I'm being lenient with you. If you act like this normally, I'll throw you as far away as I can!"

"Hmph! Mom, beat him!"

Liu Hui laughed out loud, "I'm being partial for once today. Your brother is tired from carrying you. Just be quiet!"

Cao An deliberately lowered her down, frightening her so much that she quickly hugged his neck. "Wrong, wrong! I won't do it anymore!"

Cao An then pushed her up and said, "You always try to provoke me. If you can't beat me or win over me, you complain!"

Xia You leaned against his shoulder, feeling a little languid. She had no chance to interact with outsiders at the base, let alone being carried like this. Even with her parents, she'd never had any close contact. Lying on Cao An's shoulder, she felt completely secure, as if he were the one who could hold her up. She knew this wasn't love between a man and a woman, and Cao An only treated her like a younger sister.

Isn’t the relationship between brother and sister good?

"Brother~"

"Hmm?" Cao An's voice came from his chest, and it reached his ear which was pressed against his shoulder in a dull voice.

“It’s so nice to meet you and Mom!”

"We are lucky to have you."

Perhaps it was because of a deep bond in the previous life that we were able to achieve a kinship that transcends blood ties in this life.

Cao An tilted his head and placed a kiss on her little head. "You will always be my sister!"
