Chapter 12 Public Security Bureau

Everyone looked at Zhang Yun who was pressed to the ground and heard her mumbling to herself.

"She must have come back for revenge, little bastard. I knew she wasn't a good person. We just left her out to fend for herself, didn't we? What's wrong? We've raised her for so many years, and she doesn't care at all. Even as a ghost, she wouldn't let us go! Damn little bastard, she deserves to die..."

She was talking incoherently, talking to herself, leaving everyone confused. But Wang Cheng finally understood what was going on. His sister-in-law had told him yesterday that Liu Daya's child was not Zhang Yunsheng's at all. Poor thing, she had suffered a lot in the Liu family, and now she was not dead but was being blamed.

"First, lock her up in an empty ward and wait until Liu Laiwang wakes up."

Liu Laiwang's illness came on suddenly, and he had a recurring fever that only subsided the next morning. His lips were chapped from the high fever, and he cried for water as soon as he opened his eyes. A nurse who happened to be changing his dressing heard him and quickly called a doctor. After confirming he was alright, she sent someone to find the team leader, who then told him to handle the matter.

Xia Youyou didn't care about the situation in the Red Star Brigade. To her, she was no longer a member of the Red Star Brigade. She had the introduction letter and proof of everything. Her first priority was to settle her household registration. Since Liu Daya, who was listed on the Liu family's household registration, was dead, she could just be Xia Youyou again.

Early in the morning, pedestrians began to appear on Baoshi Road. Everyone was walking hurriedly, the buses were packed, and bicycles were riding in groups at high speed.

She grabbed a friendly-looking woman and asked, "Excuse me, how do I get to the Public Security Bureau?"

She had already thought about it. If she wanted to avoid being caught by the refugees, she had to get a household registration first. Without a household registration, she could do nothing. She didn't want to be a beggar!

"The Public Security Bureau is over there at the steel mill."

"Where is the steel mill?"

The woman was stunned by the question, thinking she was asking about an important case at the Public Security Bureau. Who else would go there for no reason? Reluctantly, she glanced at her watch, making sure she was still in time before giving her detailed directions. "You know the State-owned Hotel, right?" Seeing her nod, he continued, "Start from the State-owned Hotel, go east, then go south at the fork in the road. When you see a chimney, that's the steel plant. The Public Security Bureau is to the left of the steel plant gate."

"Thank you." Xia Youyou sincerely thanked this strange woman, once again feeling the simple kindness of this era. Reaching into her bag, she pulled out a goose egg and handed it to her, "This is an egg laid by my goose. Thank you for showing me the way."

The woman stared at the huge egg in her hand with wide eyes and waved her hands repeatedly, "No, no, no, thanks. I'm just pointing the way. I'm not helping you at all." Wow, this goose egg is really big, probably half a pound! How fat must the goose be to lay such a big egg!

Xia Youyou grabbed the woman who was about to leave and placed the egg in her hand. "Thank you so much. Don't worry, I have more at home."

The woman swallowed. Although people were starting to raise livestock these days, geese were still rare. She gritted her teeth and took the goose egg, smiling friendly at Xia Youyou. "Thank you. I'm a worker at the textile factory up ahead. My name is He Mei. If you need anything, come find me at the textile factory."

Xia Youyou nodded, "My name is Xia Youyou." It doesn't matter if she gets to know me. More friends mean more paths. I hope to make good friends in this strange era. Besides, this woman is very kind!

"Then I'll be leaving now. I'm going to be late!"

"Okay, goodbye!" Xia Youyou smiled and waved at her. This was her first friend.

He Mei put the eggs into her bag, turned around and ran forward. If she didn’t run, she would really be late!

Xia Youyou watched her hurried steps, worried she might fall over the gravel on the road. Just now, seeing her patiently pointing the way for her, she felt a little guilty. She remembered that there was nothing in her space to send. Sending food would be too much of a gift, and sending money would be too abrupt. The only thing she loved was the goose eggs, and she had plenty in her space! Thinking of He Mei's wide-eyed expression as she looked at the giant goose eggs in her hands, she laughed out loud. It was so funny!

He Mei was a woman of medium height, with a broad face and a few freckles, probably around 20 years old. She wore her hair in two long braids, had thick eyebrows and large eyes, and embodied the natural simplicity of her time, unlike the morbid aesthetic of later generations who pursued the ultimate cone-shaped face.

Xia Youyou walked towards the state-owned restaurant she had visited yesterday. From a distance, she saw the two waiters cleaning the windows and doors at the door. She snorted inwardly, "Wait until I make money so they can come spend it!"

Thinking about it, it didn't make sense. Why should I be angry with them? "Wait for me to come and eat delicious food!"

She curled her lips under the scarf and laughed at herself.

Following He Mei's directions, she soon found the steel mill. The chimneys towered, belching thick white smoke. She looked around and saw the Public Security Bureau, as He Mei had mentioned, to the left of the steel mill.

Xia Youyou frowned in disdain. Why was the Public Security Bureau so shabby? There was only a wooden sign hanging at the door, and the two iron doors looked a little shaky. She shook her head, walked over, and knocked. Soon, someone poked their head out of the bungalow.

"Who are you looking for, comrade?"

Xia Youyou was stunned. This man was wearing a police hat, but his face looked a little childish, like a child who hadn't grown up yet. "I'm not looking for anyone."

The man straightened his uniform, looking a little nervous, and came out to help her open the door. "What can I do for you?"

"I'm here to ask how to register my household registration."

"Oh, wait a minute, I'll go get someone. They just started working and are still getting changed."

Xia Youyou raised an eyebrow. I see. She followed him through the gate and stood in the courtyard waiting for a moment. She saw a group of tall men approaching. Her eyes widened. Wasn't this the man from last night? Suddenly, she remembered, oh, yes, the middle-aged woman last night said her son was a police officer. She closed her eyes and raised her hand to tap her forehead, feeling annoyed. Why hadn't she thought of asking him for help last night?

The tall, burly man in the lead frowned at her. The child, who had been wrapped up tightly last night, appeared before him again. He looked at her in confusion, only to see her resting her head on her hand, unconsciously scratching her forehead. He walked up to her and said in a hoarse voice, "Are you here to see me?"

Xia Youyou was still trying to figure out how to ask him for help with her household registration, but she felt it was too abrupt. How could he possibly help her after just a brief encounter? Suddenly, he spoke above her head, startling her. She shuddered and took a step back before looking up at him. How could he be so tall? She only reached his chest.

"Are you here to see me?" Seeing that she seemed frightened, Cao An asked again in a softer tone.

Xia Youyou finally reacted, "No, I didn't come here to look for you. I didn't know you were here."

Cao An nodded to show that he understood. "What's the matter with you coming here?"

"Yes, yes, I have something to do." She was a little nervous and remembered the important matter, and said nervously: "I want to ask how to get my household registration."

Cao An frowned, "You don't have a household registration?" An illegal resident?

Xia Youyou quickly waved her hand, "I do, but it's a long story. My household registration is not here."
