I turned to look at the right hand from which the anomaly was coming.
As I moved away from the sword demon's body, which was recovering from its injuries, pale silver-white particles suddenly gathered at my fingertips, forming a familiar key. A dark, deep lock suddenly appeared in mid-air before me, enticing me to pick up the key and probe inside.
what happened?
I was a little bewildered, because I hadn't actively summoned the mentor's authority, nor had I expected it to suddenly appear at my side.
The key, shimmering like a breath, seemed to be reminding me that there were hidden elements here to be explored, and that they urgently needed to be discovered.
This is the first time I've ever seen such a phenomenon.
Could this be a backdoor that the mentor commissioned the studio to set up? It's like some kind of cheat code, or an extra reward after the battle.
But this never happened when we defeated the giant rats before. Is it only effective against humans?
With this question in mind, I tried to grab the silver key and then reached inside.
A crisp, clear biting sound.
A door, far grander than any I'd seen before, yet strangely ethereal, emerged from mid-air. Gears, turntables, and levers, imbued with mechanical beauty, appeared on the surface of the silver door, with a closed eye-like engraving at the very top.
As the key was turned, the pleasant sound of gears turning and levers striking rang out in a crisp and rhythmic manner. Multiple mechanical discs of varying sizes spun rapidly, rotating in and out of each other's positions in a series of complex formulas and sequences. After a flurry of activity in all directions, they finally split into two perfectly aligned halves, opening inwards to reveal a slit.
I stared in shock at what I was seeing.
Until a rather heavy book fell straight down from the crack in the door, landing right in my arms.
Then, just as I hurriedly reached out to take it, the silver door in front of me, along with the key I had taken from it, turned into grayish-white snowflakes, which drifted away slowly in the breeze as I watched.
The falling books seemed to sink into the water, creating ripples in mid-air before disappearing completely.
This sudden turn of events left me speechless for a long time as I repeatedly stared at the empty space where the door had disappeared and the spot where the fallen books had landed.
"...Brother Uriel—! Are you all alright—?"
It wasn't until I faintly heard a familiar call in the distance that I belatedly regained my senses.
What just happened?
What exactly has my mentor, that enigmatic figure, prepared for me this time?
