Chapter 136 Care and Feeding
Today's breakfast was just as ordinary as usual.
Wash up quietly, eat quietly, and talk quietly.
...except that I was suddenly fed a huge amount of food.
"This is a snow lotus fruit that Miss Miyuki found on a nearby mountain. I don't know how long it has been growing, but I've already washed and cut it open, so let's eat it first."
"This is baked mashed potatoes with cheese. I added some bacon and some sour fruit pieces. It should taste great."
"This is pan-fried cod that I prepared beforehand. I used black pepper, mint and lemon juice to enhance the flavor, and also drizzled a little cheese and honey water on it. I don't know if it will suit my taste."
"This is creamy mushroom risotto. The mushrooms were delivered by the Pegasus. They were all tested and found to be non-toxic. It's very fragrant and tastes great."
"And these too: raspberry and blueberry tarts, coconut muffins, caramel pudding ice cream, canelés, and chocolate four-color bowls—all freshly baked and delicious!"
"..."
I put down my fork with some hesitation and looked at the food that covered almost half the table in front of me, feeling a little burdened.
"I'm very grateful, but why did you suddenly prepare so much?" I asked softly. "Usually, we only have two dishes and a soup."
"And making so many desserts all of a sudden must have taken a long time, right? Have you not been sleeping much since then? Can your body handle it?"
That's exactly what I meant!
Annie chimed in with discontent—"That guy just reached out to take the most delicious-looking raspberry blueberry tart from in front of me, but Hikari knocked it away before he even got halfway through."
"Why do I only get one plate of spaghetti bolognese?! That's not fair!"
"You still can't finish the portion I gave you, you lazy cat."
Hikari slapped away the outstretched hand again: "If you want to learn, then learn from me. I asked before, but I had no intention of doing so."
"How could that be! My stomach is always big enough for desserts!"
After automatically filtering out the second half of her sentence, Annie's eyes widened, and she grumbled for a while before her voice gradually softened into a soft mutter: "Fine, at least 'Lazy Cat' sounds better than 'Little Pig'."
"What?"
Hikari, who hadn't heard clearly, tilted her head in confusion.
"No, no, it's nothing!"
Watching Annie hurriedly run away with the plate that looked like it had been completely scraped clean, I suppressed my laughter again and focused all my energy on dealing with the meal in front of me.
Well, to express our gratitude for the lavish meal prepared by Hikari and the others, we should at least eat this with gratitude.
but.
"By the way, where did Miyuki and Ai An go?"
I picked up a small floret of broccoli that was being served as a side dish, put it in my mouth and chewed: "I don't seem to see them in my sensory sphere."
The furthest distance I can sense is probably slightly larger than the cross-sectional platform halfway up the mountain where I am right now. Therefore, I only need to release my usually restrained senses and look for familiar auras in the surroundings, which I can do accurately even in a crowd.
Therefore, I was able to confirm with certainty that the two of them had left the vicinity of this platform.
Miyuki has a strong ability to protect herself. Even I have the confidence that "even if I launch a surprise attack from behind her, I will definitely not get the better of her." Therefore, what is more worrying is the young boy Ai An, who only has a weak body.
"Hmm? Can that be used like that?" Hikari blinked before responding, "After finishing her morning practice, Miss Miyuki said she wanted to take a look at that cave she had visited before. Coincidentally, another person overheard this and said he wanted to go with her. Since he was very well-behaved the whole way, he agreed."
"I originally wanted to invite you all along, but seeing that you were all sleeping so soundly, you must have been tired from playing yesterday, so I stayed behind to take care of you."
I nodded: "So eager? Her injury hasn't healed yet."
Hikari's eyebrows curved into a smile: "Miss Miyuki said that her injuries were all minor and had almost healed on the way back. She just thought it would be good to rest for a couple of days, so she didn't object when she made the decision."
"As for the reason for going there, there wasn't any particular reason. It's just that there was something that was bothering me, so I wanted to go and check it out on my own."
Is there anything else worth noting in that cave?
The passageway was riddled with traps, the cave was spacious, the material warehouse was completely ransacked, and there were four doors with different patterns carved on them... Basically, everything that was suspicious had been confirmed, and even hidden items had been found. It didn't seem like a place that would be worth exploring again.
Before leaving, they even deliberately used magic and some materials that might have special properties to test the area, but nothing unexpected happened.
I'm a little concerned, but I'll know the answer once she gets back.
I put down my fork, rinsed my throat with honey jasmine tea again, and then picked up a slice of tart with a bit of a burden and put it in my mouth. The crispy crust was mixed with plump fruit pieces that were slightly sweet and sour, and there was also smooth and delicate cream inside. For a moment, I didn't know whether to praise the excellent craftsmanship first, or to hurriedly fill my empty mouth with it.
"If you like it, I'll make some more later."
With her hands supporting her chin on the table, Hikari's tone subtly reminded me of a kind mother gently coaxing a child not to eat too quickly.
Quickly brushing aside the strange sense of déjà vu that suddenly popped into my head, I turned to Hikari and asked, "Aren't you going to eat something? It should be almost noon now, right?"
"Of course, we ate it while it was being prepared!"
