Chapter 140 An Unexpected Event After Another
The bluish-white arc of light, like a nimble bird, swept past the half-ruined statue with its sword poised to strike with an irregular motion, leaving two long trails behind it.
The statue's pose was stiff and frozen in place.
After a brief silence, the first thing to happen was a loud, strange noise.
It was as if a giant rock was rolling down a cliff, or as if a waterfall of snow was rushing in.
Fine, crisscrossing cuts spread from head to toe across every section of the statue, disrupting the gathering magic and causing it to tilt, slip, and disintegrate.
Beyond the pale gold barrier, all the still-active, pale statues, like puppets whose master control had been activated, froze in place, disintegrating into ash at the same moment, enveloping everything inside in a cloud of billowing dust.
In the distance, several pillars and corners that were also affected showed fine cracks and a few fragments fell off.
I looked up at all the changes happening before my eyes.
After a long while, the stunned and speechless people finally gathered together as they stepped over the shimmering, gradually dissolving dust.
"Are you two alright?"
Before anyone could be seen, Sheng's anxious voice pierced the fog that obscured the view.
The hurried footsteps drew closer, and even though the boy was breathing heavily, his anxiety compelled him to come quickly to check on the situation.
Shan and Xiaoxi appeared at the rear, just a step behind.
I waved my hand, causing the flowing wind to disperse the surrounding dust. Crossing the now quiet hall, I nodded slightly to the group: "I'm fine here." Then I turned to look at the hunched figure with his sword ahead, "But that one seems to be seriously injured and needs urgent treatment..."
"I'm fine," the sword demon interrupted me. "I just did it on a whim. Don't worry about me."
As he spoke, he seemed to wipe his mouth, then stood up unsteadily and walked forward.
I said, "Given your current physical condition, you'd probably have trouble even walking. It would be very difficult to pass the test in this state, wouldn't it? Anyway, there's still plenty of time, so resting a bit more won't hurt..."
"This minor injury is nothing."
Wow! This guy is even more stubborn than I imagined.
You can't persuade a dying man with kind words; there's no such thing as a third time. After being rejected twice in a row, I stopped trying to persuade him and let him die.
"It's alright, brother."
Wiping the sweat from my brow, Sheng glanced at the back of the Sword Demon as he staggered toward the third archway. He quietly leaned closer and whispered to me, "He has his reasons for doing this. Rather than wasting time recuperating in the second exhibition hall, going to the next hall might allow him to find healing items and speed up his recovery."
"A healing item?" I hesitated for a second, then it dawned on me, "Is it something like [liquid life]?"
Sheng blinked: "Hey, big brother, do you know what it's called? It's called [Liquid Life], an alchemical product that's kept in a narrow-necked bottle and appears as a red liquid."
I was just saying it casually, but it turned out to be true.
"Although we don't know who first researched and produced it, thanks to this item, the character's condition can be effectively restored after or before some extremely difficult battles in the game, greatly increasing the margin for error in clearing the game." Sheng's explanation continued.
I nodded: "So, according to you, we're currently in the midst of an extremely difficult battle, or rather, it doesn't seem like the end."
Although an unexpected incident occurred during the approach, it wasn't to the extent that we hadn't prepared a contingency plan. We just didn't expect that the sword demon would suddenly rush over to help block the attack.
However, why didn't I sense much movement when that statue flapped its wings? I was clearly on guard the whole time.
“…Indeed, although the second exhibition hall seemed slightly more difficult than I was used to, it wasn’t too far off. Apart from the final blow, it was still a level of difficulty that could be overcome with just time.” Sheng pondered for a few seconds, then shook his head. “Perhaps this is a difference in perception caused by the shift from observing through a screen to experiencing it in person…Anyway, that scene just now really scared us.”
"Feel sorry."
Noticing the two people standing nearby, hesitantly approaching to speak, I apologized first: "But I didn't approach without any precautions. I just didn't expect the attack to come so suddenly."
"I know! But seeing that kind of scene still gives me a fright!"
"Yes, even though we know the leader is very powerful, any normal person would feel worried in that situation."
"I hope you can take better care of yourself. I feel guilty for not being able to fulfill my responsibilities."
Finally, Sheng changed the subject after this rambling: "Speaking of which, did something happen between you two before? That madman actually chose to rush over and take the knife for you."
I shook my head: "I don't know either."
Logically speaking, both of our meetings were confrontational, and we even had an unpleasant fight before. Although we made an agreement before entering the room that we would not interfere with each other and would help each other if necessary, that cannot explain why he suddenly stepped in and helped me withstand the most critical attack.
I'm pretty sure that even if I had chosen to stand still and let my multiple defenses take the hits, I could have barely held on. It's just that I might have suffered some residual damage and accumulated a lot of internal injuries, and whether I could even stand up was another question, but I would definitely have been in a much worse state than I am now.
