Chapter 148 Territorial Wars (Part 1)
A new main quest has arrived!
Main Quest #5: Territory Wars.
Difficulty: B
[Condition: Have you noticed this forest? All you need to do is one thing: try to survive the relentless attacks of predators.]
Of course, please rest assured, they are all just cute and gentle little animals.
The mission will officially begin in one hour. Please occupy a suitable nearby safe zone as soon as possible.
Time limit: Three days.
[Reward: The occupied temporary safe zone is upgraded to an outpost, with significantly increased security.]
[Failure: You will be forced to become homeless, or you will lose your lives.]
...Compared to the previous tasks, the tone of the description of the task content in the newly appeared prompt box has changed significantly.
If the previous tone was more like a mission announcement presented by an emotionless, inorganic object, the current tone is as if someone is looking down on the actors' performance on stage from a superior perspective, with a hint of mockery and anticipation for an upcoming, dramatic show.
"Could this be that guy...?"
I quietly approached Sheng and tentatively asked him a question.
After a brief pause, Sheng seemed to have just remembered this possibility, and a thoughtful expression appeared on his face: "Big brother, what you said makes sense. This feeling is very similar to when those guys interfered... But this time, they've actually gotten involved in the mission so early?"
From his words, I can clearly glean two things:
First, it is indeed possible for demons to intervene in the main storyline.
Second, under normal circumstances, the time when demons intervene in the main quest should be later than it is now.
"When does this usually happen?" I asked again.
"After the thirtieth mission is completed."
Sheng said confidently, "In the game's setting, there will be a version update at this time. Because the [Great Enemy] that originally locked the first level cap of the world will be removed, those interested and angry will collectively rise from their slumber to spy, or directly participate in the world's transformation and changes."
"I usually consider it a short-lived, time-limited event because during this affected period, all tasks will experience some degree of disruption."
"Those who receive more attention will have priority access to later-ordered main quests, thus skipping the more complicated tasks ahead and gaining the chance to reach the final stairway to the apocalypse. However, this opportunity is not reserved for a fixed number of people. If the person holding the opportunity is unfortunately killed by someone else, the opportunity will be transferred to the person who killed them."
"It sounds like deliberately setting up bait to lure people into killing each other."
After a few seconds of silence, Sheng gave a bitter smile: "Yes, Brother Uriel, you're right. This is also the period with the most deaths in the game, which means that when the last few missions were announced, the number of people who still had combat power and could team up to complete them was extremely small."
"You want to change that?"
Sheng gave a silent "hmm" as if in agreement, then looked down at his tangled fingers.
“Although I have long recognized reality, I am now only further confirming it: I cannot do this on my own.” He added softly, “I am just an ordinary person who just happened to have played a game similar to the situation that is happening now, so I know some information that may be about the future in advance.”
"But what if the content of that game isn't entirely similar to my current reality? Given all the changes that have already occurred, I can't be sure that what happens next will be consistent with what I know."
“I even can’t help but worry: what if things continue like this, and I can’t keep up, and I become a burden to everyone, or I can’t continue to provide help and end up being left behind?”
The boy's expression wavered due to the series of unexpected events.
I looked around and confirmed it with my senses.
Most of the survivors who had been staying nearby had already packed their meager belongings and began to slowly move outwards with the help of the others. The few remaining survivors simply stayed near the pile of belongings, gathering any remaining food, necessary changes of clothes, and weapons for self-defense.
Fortunately, there was no one else nearby who could have overheard the conversation. This discovery relieved me somewhat.
That was an extremely disheartening statement.
Especially in the current crisis-ridden world.
Regardless, even though I don't have much talent for calming people down, I still need to find a way to soothe him first.
I organized my thoughts for a moment, took a deep breath, lowered my voice, and tried to make my words sound calm: "...Sheng, there's one thing you need to remember: the information you provided not only pulled me back from danger, but also gave most of the survivors here hope to continue living in the days to come."
"You've already accomplished a great deal using your memories, that's undeniable and impossible to deny. It's normal for plans to change, because people are inherently a collection of unexpected events."
"Therefore, when faced with an uncertain future, what you need to do is not waste time doubting, but determine the next step and then come up with supplementary plans that are sufficient to deal with unexpected events."
I raised my hand and touched the wispy blue hair, concluding, "The problem has already occurred, and all we can do is try our best to deal with it, right?"
