Chapter 149 Territorial Wars (Part Two)

Chapter 149 Territorial Wars (Part Two)

The notification boxes appeared to everyone at the same time.

Everyone experienced a brief moment of distraction, as well as a distinct sense of relief and relaxation.

Then, in the next instant, a violent tremor came from beneath my feet.

Caught off guard, the people in the hall fell to the ground one after another.

The nearby bookshelves swayed, spilling out their neatly stored books. A crystal chandelier overhead wobbled, its hanging chains rattling under the weight. The unsupported, ornate decorations vibrated, then suddenly plummeted downwards with a sharp, piercing shattering sound.

Those were enormous stone sculptures and decorative patterns hanging on the walls. They must have been specially placed for aesthetic purposes during the original design of the building, and their sturdiness and materials must have been of the highest quality, far surpassing the stone and clay sculptures we see in art galleries that have been transformed into life-chasing figures.

However, in that sudden moment, the decorative items designed by our predecessors for aesthetic purposes became deadly weapons that could take lives in an instant, crashing down into the crowd amidst the astonished and terrified gazes of the onlookers.

"Pingping—"

A broken voice echoed from the depths of the crowd.

My gaze and senses quickly swept over everyone's positions. I saw the mother, who had not yet regained her footing, leap towards her child, attempting to push him away from where he was about to land, completely disregarding her own safety.

But that was undoubtedly in vain.

The sharp corner of the falling decoration was already close to the head of the petite girl who had fallen to the ground, while the mother, unable to exert force, could only reach her daughter with her outstretched hands an arm's length away.

She could no longer save her daughter's life, and might even lose her own life due to the subsequent secondary harm.

— [Duheng] and [Juncheng] obviously knew these things as well.

I could clearly sense the intense despair and grief contained in the tears falling from behind her, and her husband, just as desperately, reached out and embraced his wife to stop her from doing something foolish that would only bring more misfortune.

If time is allowed to flow relentlessly, it will inevitably lead to a tragedy of family destruction and death—even if the wife is lucky enough to be saved, it will only be a delayed tragedy for the family.

In a daze, I seemed to feel the touch of a pair of warm hands that had once been imprinted on my skin, followed by a gentle auditory hallucination:

"Mimi, it's okay, don't be afraid. Mommy will always protect you."

I cannot stand idly by.

Therefore, I reached out my hand.

Before I could even begin to weave syllables, the fierce yet gentle wind was already swirling around my fingertips.

There is no clear order, nor is there any tight weaving. The free wind sweeps across the vast distance between me and the family that is about to face a tragic fate, pushing away the danger of falling just a second before the last moment.

The ornate decorations crashed against the wall, shattering into countless small pieces that scattered across the nearby ground.

After a brief tremor, the panicked crowd finally came to their senses, and they couldn't help but turn their heads to look at the sudden, fearful cries that erupted from the inner part of the crowd.

I breathed a sigh of relief.

Sheng, who was standing not far away, stopped his unsteady steps and stared blankly at the family inside who were crying and hugging each other. Suddenly, he turned his head and looked at me with bright eyes: "You actually, you actually saved them! Big brother, you're so cool!"

I frowned: "Did you know this would happen?"

If his goal is to change the current ending of the game, why is he indifferent to the known plot? This clearly contradicts his previous statements.

Sheng nodded, then shook his head: "No... Although you might not believe it, brother, I didn't know that family would be in danger. All I know is that there's a low probability of death in this library, and once it happens, it's unavoidable... because every time I come to my senses, I find the dead, and I don't even know when the incident happened."

"In other words, you don't know how the event will happen."

Sheng nodded: "I've tried to change things, but every time I save someone who died in the previous playthrough, I quickly find another person dead in another place..." He said, reaching out to grasp his hand, "However, if my older brother helps, maybe this time we can really save everyone!"

That would be giving me far too much credit.

All I can do is what is within my reach.

Putting aside the fact that I was unable to activate the spell just now, yet I was able to successfully gather the free magic into the shape of wind in such a short time, and even accurately knock away the falling objects without causing the shattered fragments to hit nearby people, there are obviously some internal principles behind the summoning and release of that wind that I haven't figured out yet, and therefore I can't reproduce it smoothly for the time being.

If I were to try it again now, I wouldn't be sure if I could get the same result without preparing the appropriate statements.

It's highly unlikely.

My intuition was whispering to me quietly.

However, before I could think of a reply to Sheng, something else caught my attention.

Several warning signs left on the way here were triggered one after another.

The newcomer was incredibly fast and quite short and agile, clearly not human or any humanoid creature. Furthermore, according to my calculations, if it continued charging straight towards us at this speed, it would collide head-on with the first defensive barrier I had left behind in less than half a minute.
