Chapter 160 Tracking
After some hesitation, Sheng and I finally decided to follow the rapidly disappearing sword demon.
The library had just repelled an attack, and the replenished defensive barriers and trigger spells had been re-established. In addition, seeds buried by Sheng that could grow rapidly and bind intruders had been added as a supplement. There were also permanent sentry posts that rotated from time to time, so there shouldn't be any problems in the short term.
...provided that the bastard Sword Demon doesn't cause us any additional problems.
"Is that guy planning to take care of that overlord by himself?"
I lowered my voice and asked Sheng, who was also crouching in the bushes nearby.
As an elf user, Sheng has the ability to make the bushes split and merge at the right time, which can both conceal our whereabouts and track the sword demon's movements. Even though the other party is alert enough and speeds up to circle around in the forest to interfere, it still cannot shake us off.
“I don’t know either.” Sheng also lowered his voice, “but… based on his personality as portrayed in the game’s storyline, there’s a high probability that he did this.”
"...Because of what the prophet and he said before?" I asked doubtfully. "Can you guess what they said?"
Sheng helplessly spread his hands, then quickly pulled over nearby branches and leaves to just cover our figures.
A translucent, light gray air blade, taking advantage of the shadows in the forest, swiftly swept past us, slicing several wolfhounds that were rushing out from the depths of the forest in two, which then fell to the ground and struggled on their hands.
Without paying much attention, after sheathing his sword, the sword demon didn't pause at all. Instead, he kicked the tree trunk behind him, which accelerated him even more amidst the sudden explosion of wood chips, and he quickly left into the distance.
After a short while, once we confirmed that there were no other noises around, we relaxed a little from holding our breath.
"This guy is too alert."
Sheng complained, "I have a feeling that if we had taken just half a step further, what awaited us next would not have been just that warning attack."
I nodded in agreement: "You're right. That guy has definitely spotted us."
Just now, before the air blade flew out this way, I reached forward and roughly locked onto the direction of the sword demon's movement. My senses collided with some unusually sharp spirit and were directly sliced in half.
Through a series of simple judgments, it can be reasonably inferred that this is precisely the sword demon's vague perception of the outside world, or in other words, a martial artist's sixth sense, or awareness.
Previously, I had been worried that my senses might be detected by the Sword Demon's extremely refined perception because of his strength, which far exceeded that of ordinary martial artists. Therefore, I had only been vaguely sensing him from a range that was inaccessible to the outside world. I did not expect that he would still discover me. He even seemed to have found my location by following the direction of my perception and launched a counterattack.
Although this did not cause me any harm, the tracking method that was originally working was rendered half useless.
Fortunately, he hasn't realized that being in the forest means he'll be constantly tracked by the sun; at least we don't have a tracking method to avoid losing our partner.
However, since that's the case, we don't need to keep hiding like this anymore.
I stood up abruptly and, using the sparse, faint red glow of the sky and the senses scattered around me, groped my way forward.
"Brother, can you see clearly?"
Sheng stumbled and bumped to catch up with me, then grabbed my sleeve and followed closely behind.
I shook my head: "We can barely make out the terrain, but we still have to be extremely careful about how to proceed. Sheng, there's a protruding tree root in front of you, be careful not to trip over it."
Sheng did as instructed, taking two small hops that just happened to step over the thick tree root.
He frowned: "This is too slow, and we have to be careful not to cause too much of a commotion. By the time we catch up with that bastard, he might already be done fighting."
"Do you have any other ideas? Like you reminded me before, I don't recommend using fire directly. Using light will also easily reveal our location," I asked.
Sheng hesitated for a few seconds, then suddenly let go of my right arm and stood still.
I turned back to look at him.
Just then, a sliver of light, as thin as a veil, shone through the swaying gaps in the tree trunks, falling on the loosely dressed boy. Combined with the vines that draped behind him and swayed gently in the wind, he resembled a petite young woman with waist-length hair, exuding a hazy, enchanting allure, like a fairy.
The "forest fairy," standing slightly higher than the surrounding terrain, slowly raised her hands, her ten fingers peeking out from the cuffs of her hoodie and stretching upwards, gradually gathering emerald green energy in front of her.
It symbolizes the power that is the source of life for all things, the tangible embodiment of vitality that drives all living beings to maintain their activity. Even from a short distance, I could still feel the subtle tremors within it, beating like a heartbeat.
The surrounding environment fell silent in an instant. There were no noisy insect chirps, no occasional bird calls, and even the swaying of branches and leaves in the wind was gone. It was as if everything except the scene before one's eyes had been paused and was waiting with bated breath.
I can feel that the center of this world right now is the person standing right in front of me.
In the silence, Sheng gathered his hands together, as if cupping water, and lifted the fist-sized ball of emerald energy, then gradually clenched it between his fingers, without letting out a single ray of light.
With a soft "pop," like a punctured balloon, countless tiny fragments of light rapidly dispersed from Sheng's palms, spreading to every corner of the forest in the blink of an eye, transforming into a magnificent spectacle like floating fireflies.
