Chapter 170 The Legendary Hidden Place
A circular hall, chairs, and a man sitting with a sword at his side.
If it weren't for the fact that Shen Xue was sitting in the hall facing the entrance, I would almost have suspected that I was about to hear a classic auditory hallucination.
Was the way this guy was staring at me just now a little impolite?
Shen Xue frowned and stared at me for a long time before looking away.
"Did you encounter any problems on the way here? You seem to have taken a lot of time," she asked again.
Hikari subconsciously glanced at Anne, who looked indifferent, and shook her head: "No, it's not a big problem. I'm just thinking about how to get down the shaft safely."
"Is it that difficult? Once you're sure you're about to arrive, just stomp your feet against the cave wall a few times to slow your descent."
I was speechless: "That's a method only you can use. For the rest of us, just jumping into that hole takes a lot of courage, and if we don't have a plan for landing, we can easily get injured."
That pool of water was so deep it scared the cat a bit, but thankfully nothing serious happened in the end.
“…I understand.” Miyuki looked at us one by one and nodded in deep agreement. “You all need more training, otherwise you’ll just be a pile of pig iron that’s easy to break at the slightest touch.”
Couldn't this guy take into account the differences in inclinations between mages and warriors?
I was too lazy to argue with her any further, so I just flicked my tail and wandered around the hall while Hikari and Miyuki were exchanging what they had observed along the way.
Compared to the passageways and single rooms we passed through earlier, this hall seemed to be the place where the original residents spent the most time. The stone walls were carved to be exceptionally smooth, yet many fancy decorations, or simply decorative ornaments, were attached to some corners.
These sculptures are scattered throughout every corner, their shadows of varying depths cast by the ever-burning mermaid candles overhead and around them.
Even though it wasn't very relevant, it still subconsciously reminded me of what I saw when I accidentally stepped into a wood carving workshop at the Sacred Tree Fortress.
However, just like the individual items we saw before, there were also many rotten fabrics and metal objects with fallen dust. The humid air was filled with a slightly fishy metallic smell, and a layer of dark green moss had grown on the backlit corners.
"No matter where you go, you'll find plants with vigorous vitality."
Anne strolled over and casually kicked the stone wall, not even with much force, looking rather listless: "It's not necessarily more interesting here than up there."
I turned to look at her and twitched my ears: "I didn't have time to ask earlier, were you looking at something before?"
With her hands clasped behind her head, Annie pivoted on her right foot, her left leg arcing outwards, instantly turning around and sitting upright on a nearby stone bench, crossing her legs as she did so: "Nothing much, just observing those stalagmites... Is that what they're called? I, this young lady, am looking at the patterns on those things."
"What's so interesting about the patterns?"
I was puzzled: "Without professional equipment, at most you can only make a simple judgment from its color and texture about how many times the composition of the surrounding environment has changed and roughly how much time has passed. More information requires further experimental analysis, which is the professional field of alchemy."
Anne spread her hands: "I don't know anything about alchemy. Is that an ability you possess?"
I shook my head: "That's a discipline. Although people can work part-time, the material consumption and knowledge required for it will be like a bottomless pit before they can make a living. It's not like what people say, that it's a profession where you can easily make money. Instead, it's more like a money-burning machine."
I paused for a moment, then added, "Moreover, our academy's alchemy professor actually hates that his students treat alchemy as a mere tool for making money, although in most cases no one chooses to agree with his ideals."
"Compared to poetry and distant places, the mundane realities of the present are more important, aren't they?"
"We still have to make a living."
Shaking my head, I eavesdropped on a conversation not far away, confirming that they would take some time to finish. Then I raised another unexpected question with Annie: "How can you see clearly in such a dark place?"
"Is it dark?" The girl frowned. "Didn't you use a light to illuminate it?"
"The area where you are standing is the edge that the firelight can reach."
"That settles it."
I was speechless: "Then, when we came down, you said you hated dark, cramped, enclosed spaces..."
"Anyone else would be scared!" Annie interrupted me with a disgruntled shout, successfully drawing everyone's attention.
But Aian looked eager to try... Well, considering that in the end Hikari pushed her over, I didn't say much.
Of course, the main reason was that the two attracted each other began to move closer. I could even vaguely feel the questioning gaze that Miyuki was casting at me from the fur on my back, and I subconsciously tightened my skin a little.
As for Ai An... this little guy separated from us not long after he stepped into the hall.
Unlike Annie and me, he leaned against the stone wall on the other side, looking up as if he was carefully observing the nearby decorations.
However, in just a short moment, the senses that had spread out again failed to capture the little guy's figure.
Where did Ai An go?
