Chapter 192 Matters of Anomaly

Chapter 192 Matters of Anomaly

"Why did the tenth mission suddenly start?!"

He suddenly jumped up, slamming his foot on the table, and raised his voice in disbelief.

I was equally shocked and repeatedly checked to make sure that the window that appeared in front of me was not a prank.

After all, just a short while ago, when I first woke up, I specifically called up the notification window to check the accumulated task reports in order to confirm the accuracy of the images I saw through the [Fool's Curtain]. And the notification window did indeed show a countdown of more than a day for the upcoming main quest phase.

There must have been some factor that caused this unusual change.

"Calm down, Sheng."

I applied extra pressure to the boy, whose breathing was unsteady: "No matter what, we must first confirm all the information we can confirm before we think about anything else, shall we?"

As I said this, I turned my gaze back to the notification box that I hadn't had time to carefully check, and checked each piece of information one by one.

A new main quest has arrived!

Main Quest #10: The Four Pillars of Wind.

[Difficulty: ???]

[Condition: Find the embodiment of wind [Sylphid] and suppress it.]

Of course, killing [Sylphid] directly is the easiest way, but I cannot guarantee the consequences.

Time Limit: ???

[Reward: Unlocks fast travel to other areas and begins the next mission.]

[Failure: You will be forever trapped in this endless cycle with no beginning, and will eventually be torn to pieces in a catastrophe brought about by the wind.]

"...It seems those demons have interfered with the mission once again."

A heavy voice came from across the room. I looked up and saw Sheng, who had sat back down in his chair, pick up his teacup, frown, and gulp down the bitter, dark brown liquid.

"No milk or sugar?" I asked.

Sheng paused for a moment, slowing down his tea-drinking motion: "...The stock is too small, we need to drink it sparingly."

"But this situation is clearly unexpected, isn't it? So you don't know how to deal with it either." I said, taking the half-full teacup, pouring in the right amount of milk, adding a few more sugar cubes, and stirring silently. "Instead of worrying about the unknown future, why not live life to the fullest in the present, right?"

"...You'll get fat."

Sheng muttered a complaint, but didn't stop me. He held the cup with both hands, carefully took it, and sipped it.

After a long silence, he finally sighed, "Thank you. I really can't live without Brother Uriel."

I shrugged: "I didn't do anything."

Sheng smiled slightly: "No, I'm already very grateful that someone can be there for me when I feel confused and uneasy."

“Those days made me feel like I was all alone. Even when Juncheng and the others showed me trust, I couldn’t be sure if it was because I knew them well enough or because I had actually done something that made them trust me.” He paused. “It was like I was the only one isolated. Even standing so close, I was still outside the screen, observing them like someone who didn’t exist.”

"Fortunately, you're finally awake, big brother. It makes me feel like I'm not the only one here."

I looked at him silently, and gently clapped my hands together twice.

Just as he said, being outside the screen, observing others, witnessing their joys and sorrows, is my greatest feeling as an outsider.

I can feel their misfortune and pain, and I can understand and empathize with them, but all of this is actually irrelevant to me.

Because I know perfectly well that no matter how dangerous things are in this fictional world, to me, a passerby, it's nothing more than a trivial breeze blowing from ten miles away, and it won't cause me any harm.

The attribute called [Outsider] coldly reveals this fact.

This is Tartarus, a hell for the people of this fictional world, not mine.

I had to change the subject: "Now that things have happened, do you have any plans or preparations?"

“Countermeasures or preparations…” Sheng sighed. “To be honest, all the preparations I made before were to deal with the original tenth task. This main task is one I’ve never heard of before, let alone made any targeted preparations for it.”

"The only thing I know for sure right now is that if this mission fails, we'll face a terrible ending." He put two fingers together in quotation marks, "and it will be an absolute bad ending."

"That doesn't sound good."

"Yes, at least we can't turn things around with our own abilities alone. Perhaps we'll have to rely on the protagonist... Ah! That madman!"

I turned my head following Sheng's suddenly frenzied gaze, only to see a black shadow leap down from above, landing lightly on the ground outside the library, bending its knees to dissipate the accumulated potential energy.

He drew his straight sword, walked around for a while, and suddenly began to draw something on the ground with the tip of the sword.

What is he doing?

Seeing Sheng run quickly outside, I followed closely behind him.

“If I’m not mistaken, it should be a simple magic circle for summoning demons.” Sheng frowned. “Although it’s not a more advanced form of making a contract with a demon, even just summoning a demon for questioning still requires paying a price. Those guys won’t tolerate unconditional charity.”
