Chapter 2 Forced to Go Out

“…But that shouldn’t be the World Tree you’re looking for, right? If it really is, then it’s not just a matter of panic.” I pointed out the error in her statement. “Isn’t the World Tree a colossal object that can be clearly observed from the farthest distance?”

You are absolutely right.

Yao showed no sign of anger, nodding in agreement: "But when it comes to strange trees, isn't the most peculiar source the World Tree itself? Many anomalies related to forests, if traced back to their origins, are more or less related to it. And now, some potentially related anomalies have suddenly appeared in recent records. Although they are quite different, wouldn't it be easier to get closer to those remaining traces if we continue to explore and investigate along this clue?"

"Oh yes, yes, you're right. But I always feel like you're just trying to trick me into working."

"Yes, Master of the Little Garden. Without your help, how could we, a few weak women, possibly get so close to the truth?"

"...Damn it! What kind of weak woman are you!"

"Mr. Yumi! I've made my choice!" Hikari, who had been pondering for a long time, raised her hand again, swallowed hard, and said, "Let's go eat teppanyaki first! I've been looking forward to that for so long, and it looks so delicious! I can't wait any longer! As for the rest, we can eat the rest next time we go out, okay?"

Sigh, compared to that awful housekeeper who always tried to control me, even this idiot who only knows how to revolve around me has become much more pleasing to the eye.

I smiled and patted Hikari's head, then led her happily through the door of the house with the [White Fox Residence] sign hanging above us.

Perhaps because it wasn't mealtime yet, there were only a few scattered dishes inside, and the employees were casually leaning against a corner of the counter, chatting and laughing in small groups.

Exquisite and antique-style furnishings are hidden in the corner of the room. They are neither eye-catching nor make the atmosphere too oppressive or dull. The lingering aroma of meat blends with the elegant fragrance, adding a different layer and making people's mouths water.

I randomly chose a quiet corner where no one was around and sat down. While Hikari was ordering food, I looked around and then remembered something.

As we were about to leave, Yao deliberately pushed the absent-minded Hikari to my side and instructed me to take her with me. When asked why, he said that as long as we took her for a walk around Piss City, we could quickly find any clues or things that might be difficult to locate.

I even mocked her at the time, asking if they believed that Hikari possessed some kind of super-powerful ability to find people and things, which was why they accepted the mission to find the World Tree and traveled all over the world encountering trouble. But Yao just smiled mysteriously and said that you would understand when the time came, without offering any further explanation.

When asked who might possess the clues, Yao's face showed a rare moment of distortion.

That was truly an extraordinary and bizarre event, on par with the most shocking and unbelievable occurrences.

I always thought that this person, who appeared to be a dignified and elegant lady, was as cold and hard inside as she was on the outside, and that nothing could move her. But today I witnessed such a strange thing, and I almost couldn't hear what she was saying.

Yao said, "The holder of the clue claims to be [White Fox]."

White Fox... It's quite a coincidence that the shop I'm in right now has the words "White Fox" on its nameplate.

Could it be that the white fox Yao mentioned and the white fox referred to in the name of this shop are the same person?

What kind of coincidence could there be in the world?

It's worth noting that countless businesses use animal nicknames in their shop names and signs. Most of them simply use the animal's shape or appearance to attract attention, or they simply like the animal, or they can't think of any other words, so they use the animal as a substitute.

Does that mean every shop that uses the word "white fox" on its sign is related to the object I'm looking for? That would be far too speculative.

Just as I was pondering this, a voice suddenly rang out from the side.
