Chapter 215 First, Find the Way
The cold wind howled fiercely.
The moment I opened my eyes, I couldn't help but close them again and raise my hand to cover my face.
The feeling was different from when I had just woken up and looked out the window, stung by the light reflected from the distant buildings. The reason I chose to cover my face and close my eyes now was twofold: first, to prevent the cold snowflakes from falling into my eyes; and second, because I simply couldn't get used to the white expanse all around me.
It is said that the Frozen Snow City is a city covered in snow. I had prepared myself mentally when I was listening to my mentor's instructions, but when I saw it for the first time, I couldn't help but feel a little dazed.
Tall, straight trees stood bare in front, behind, left, and right, their needle-like leaves pointing in all directions, displaying a pale green similar to the color of the trunk. Heavy white snow filled the branches, and with gust after gust of wind, it finally succumbed to the weight and fell down in a flurry. However, it failed to knock down any snow, instead accumulating on the ground to form a small mound.
Looking around, I didn't see many people, nor any village or buildings. Alice and Miyuki were bending over on the tree trunks on either side, searching for something, a little distance from where I was.
When did those two go over there?
I looked in that direction, puzzled.
Logically, when passing through the Void Gate, the positions, order, and distances between each other should not easily change. Only due to differences in individual physical condition, the speed of recovery from discomfort may vary slightly, but usually the difference is not too great.
In the blink of an eye, not only did the two of them appear to have recovered to their best condition and were searching for something, but judging from the faint footprints on the snow, they had also moved a considerable distance.
The cold wind lashed my cheeks again, causing a slight pain.
I don't know if it was the cold, or because the thin snowflakes inside, blown by such a strong wind, became more painful than the sharpest blade, but I even had the illusion that I was like a tender piece of fish on a cutting board, being sliced into small pieces from head to tail.
I pulled up my hood to cover my ears, which are prone to getting cold, and covered my neck to prevent snowflakes from getting into my collar. After casting a warming spell on myself, I finally felt a little better.
Somewhat curiously, I tentatively stepped on the ground. It didn't seem to be hard, but it had a certain firmness in its softness. However, with a little force, I could not even keep my balance and avoid falling to one side. This was all because I had a good sense of balance and reacted quickly by subconsciously using magic to take control of my center of gravity.
But this caused damage to the boots on my feet.
The snow was up to my calves, and my boots, which I had tied tightly, were stuck deep in the white snow. I tried several times but couldn't pull them out. Instead, snow kept seeping in through the gaps, sticking to my ankles and sending a cold sensation through them.
If this stalemate continues and the time drags on, I'm afraid the blood vessels in my feet might get frostbite.
I felt embarrassed, but I didn't panic. I simply raised my hand to ignite a flame, using the heat of the burning fire to melt all the snow near where my feet had sunk, and then used the momentum to draw out and evaporate the water that was about to seep into the snow.
The two people in the distance must have heard the commotion and turned around without looking back, immediately revealing helpless expressions.
"Master, how could you be so clumsy?"
Alice shook her head as she walked toward me.
Then I witnessed something that surprised me:
Alice lifted her foot and stepped forward, gently pressing the front half of her shoe onto the snow. She only pressed it down slightly, and even when she shifted her weight forward, she didn't let the sole sink in. It was as if she just grazed the snow, leaving a faint footprint that was exactly the same as the imprint I had seen before.
Is this some legendary skill that only highly skilled martial artists can learn, such as Lingbo Weibu or Treading Water Without Leaving a Trace?
As I was thinking in a somewhat confused state, the furry female knight had already crossed the distance and stood in front of me. She then placed her hands under my armpits, lifted me up instantly, and gently placed me aside.
Without sinking again, just like the skill she demonstrated, I stood steadily on the snow, the snow only just covering the soles of my boots.
Alice crossed her arms and nodded with satisfaction, looking quite pleased with herself: "Hmph, as expected, Master can't do anything without my help."
"It's not a big deal," I retorted softly. "It's a bit of a hassle, but all we need to do is melt all this snow..."
"fool!"
I received a light chop to the head instantly. I guess this little rascal saw how I usually treat the little idiot, so he copied me.
She put her hands on her hips: "You say it's all melted? Do you think you have that much magic? This is the northernmost part of the continent, snow is a daily occurrence here. Just this forest, even if you burned all your magic, you might not be able to clear it completely."
No, you know what, I might actually possess a lot of magic. Of course, that's assuming I have enough magic stones as a backup supply.
But thinking that arguing at this point wouldn't make much sense, I changed the subject: "I noticed that when you walked over just now, you didn't let your feet sink into the snow at all. How did you do that?"
“This? It’s very simple. Just keep the sword energy covering the soles of your feet.” Alice said proudly. “This is also a way to train your control over sword energy. I was talking about this with Miyuki before you came here, and she seemed very interested.”
