That's it.
Shen Xue nodded and continued, "You should remember the city's other name and the inner city walls you saw before, right? From the very beginning, only the people living in that inner city were the true residents of this city. Apart from that former noble family, most of them were believers of the God of Winter, who claimed to have received divine revelation and were determined to hold fast to this city that exists in the mountain shell at the northern end of the continent. It is for this reason that the city was named Apocalypse City."
"With the mountain's crust shielding it from the wind and snow, this was indeed an excellent hiding place. No wonder it was later discovered and forcibly occupied."
"...How do you know so much?"
I turned to look at Alice, puzzled.
We all came together and rarely separated on the way, so why does it feel like there's a huge gap in the information gathering between the two of us?
I even secretly tried to listen to the conversations of the residents around me, but all I could gather were useless gossip and trivial matters.
Alice grinned triumphantly and pointed her finger at her head.
The next moment, as she lifted the hood that had been covering her head, I was shocked to find a pair of snow-white, drooping rabbit ears peeking out playfully from under her long, matching hair, and nimbly turning left and right!
"Hehe, aren't I amazing?"
Alice moved a little closer, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear to reveal her ear, and then deliberately let the downy hairs on both sides of her ears brush against my cheeks at the same time, causing a slight tickling sensation.
"How did you do that?"
I exclaimed in surprise, and with her wink, I focused my senses on it and realized that it was an illusion created by magic, yet it also possessed real practical value.
"By increasing the channels for collecting sound, we can broaden the scope of information acquisition...?"
This is quite a novel approach.
It's a pity I don't have a deep understanding of illusion magic, otherwise I could have tried to replicate it.
"You still have the Transformation spell, right? If you just change the shape of a part of it, you should be able to achieve the same effect, right?" Alice blinked and pulled her hood back up. "But instead of that, let's focus on something closer to home, shall we?"
I followed her gaze and saw the hunter couple sitting not far from us, holding their little daughter, slowly walking towards a half-open door on the side of the hall.
That was the last room the blind saintess entered after she went inside, and it was also the location where someone had come out of there and called the hunter couple to her.
"Follow them."
Shen Xue sheathed her longsword, not carrying it on her body, but simply holding it casually to one side, and quickly followed.
Alice and I naturally didn't lag too far behind, so we took the child from them as well, to reduce their burden of moving around.
The little girl seemed even more excited. I frowned and saw Shenxue reach out her hand, forming a thin piece of ice, and hand it to me.
I don't know if doing this will be able to control the situation, but in any case, I hope the child is alright.
The inner gate was soon approaching. Stepping inside, one could see only a simple table, two wooden chairs with backs, a small cabinet, a sink, and an empty bed placed against the wall.
Did you all come together?
The woman sitting behind the table seemed to have been thinking about something. Only when she heard the door close did she finally look up and turn to us. Her slightly lowered eyes and eyelashes fluttered like butterfly wings: "Hmm... there are only two chairs here, not enough for so many people."
"Put the child on the bed first."
Alice did as she was told, and instead of rushing back, she stood by the bed, craning her neck curiously to look in this direction.
The blind woman stood in front of the low cabinet, deftly taking out bandages and medicines. She then found a basin and a towel, filled them with naturally cooled clean water, and soaked them.
Her movements were precise and without hesitation or doubt, making her seem like a normal person with clear eyes. Even when pouring hot water, she never hesitated about whether she would burn herself, nor did she ask for help from us.
My doubts resurfaced about whether she was truly blind.
Such suspicion is baseless conjecture, and it shouldn't arise in any way. But seeing her actions now, I can't help but think that she is living a normal life.
Even so, I would not be so rude as to ask such a question out loud. That would undoubtedly be impolite.
The blind woman seemed to sense the doubt floating in the air and suddenly laughed: "If I'm not mistaken, you're probably wondering if I'm really blind, right? It's alright, I've been asked this question many times, so there's no need to feel embarrassed or impolite."
"Although I cannot explain the real reason now, I am indeed blind, so there is no doubt that I am indeed blind."
The hunter couple waved their hands in panic: "No, how could that be? The Holy Maiden is a benefactor who has been very kind to us. We would never dare to have such disrespectful thoughts."
The woman shook her head helplessly and walked towards the bed. First, she covered the child with a towel that had been wrung out of most of its moisture, and then she pulled over the blankets and wrapped the child in them.
“I’ve said this before,” the woman sighed, walking toward the hunter couple, reaching out to touch the wound lightly, feeling its shape and direction. “We are all equals. I’m not some great person, so there’s no need to treat me with such formality.”
"No, no, how could we dare..."
