Moving aside the other person's heavy body, which could almost completely block the entrance, and instructing Alice to keep the little boy who had been following along but had not been able to help much outside, Miyuki and I stepped into the dark underground. After a few steps, we heard several intermittent soft sobs coming from a corner, and the smell of smoke left over from burning wood clung to our noses.
Before I could do anything or give any instructions, Feifei in my arms spontaneously flapped her wings and circled, acting as a torch above our heads, illuminating the underground environment clearly.
Hmm... how should I describe the scene I'm seeing right now?
Whether these guys had money to burn or were simply indulging in a twisted sense of humor, they piled countless objects that resembled torture instruments into a beautifully decorated room. These ranged from the most delicate to the most bizarre, and many of them still bore traces of blood.
In a nearby corner, lifting the thick velvet covering the protrusions revealed several emaciated women, like cats and dogs, who had been artificially imprisoned. Their skin, which could not be covered by rags and had to be exposed, bore a large number of shocking scars.
With a snap, Shen Xue, her face as calm as still water, pressed down on the surface of the cage and broke off a thick iron bar.
Feifei let out a startled cry and buried herself in my arms, leaving only half of her bottom sticking out and trembling as if to vividly express her fear.
Well, let alone the little guy, even I was a bit startled.
One aspect is the disgust for those guys' cruelty and malice, but another aspect is Miyuki's unusually eccentric behavior.
I glanced at her to see if it was the right time to intervene, but the cold-blooded female swordsman simply closed her eyes slightly, took a few deep breaths, and then opened her icy eyes again, regaining her usual calm. She quickly drew her sword and slashed forward.
Like the fluttering of a butterfly's wings, without excessive sound and light effects, in the blink of an eye, she sliced those sturdy cages in two, yet the people inside remained completely unharmed.
"It's all over now."
A cold voice rang out. Shen Xue sheathed her sword, ignoring the few figures cowering with their heads in their hands. She spoke to herself, walking towards the only closed door in a corner of the ground: "The guards on the ground have all been dealt with, and your shackles have been removed. If you don't want to continue this suffering, you must rely on your own strength to leave this place and return to your families."
"You're not going to help them?"
I glanced back at the few figures who were still trembling like ostriches, shook my head, and quickly followed Shen Xue's steps.
Shen Xue continued to move forward with firm and steady steps: "We have done enough. We have not only solved the problem of the guards, but also set them free."
"Although we don't know exactly what they've been through these days, they need to rely on their own strength to emerge from the shadows left by the past, rather than just someone randomly reaching out to help them."
"Otherwise, even if they are safe now, they will one day still be trapped in the depths of nightmares, unable to escape them, and more likely to commit suicide than ordinary people."
The reasons given are not bad, but judging from their battered appearance, it's possible that someone will need to push them from behind to help them get back into the sunlight.
At least one person needs to treat their injuries first.
Thinking of this, a guy with a face as foul as his temper, who was not far away, suddenly flashed into my mind, making me want to frown.
"But you..."
Shen Xue, who was walking in front, suddenly squatted down and turned to look at me. Fortunately, I turned around in time and avoided bumping into her.
Miyuki looked me up and down, her slightly furrowed brows revealing clear worry: "You just used such a powerful attack, are you alright?"
I don't think so, right? At least I didn't sense anything beyond the range of the subtle fluctuations emanating from the crystal.
I showed her the crystal I kept close to my body, briefly described its effects, and then quickly moved on from the matter.
Let's double-check this last locked room.
Miyuki seemed to still have doubts, but in the end she just pursed her lips, nodded slightly, and said nothing more.
Although the city guards gathered in the distance will take some time to arrive, they will get here sooner or later. Any matters can be discussed in detail when we get back; there's no need to waste time now.
I focused my gaze on the wall in front of me, paused for two seconds, and slightly relaxed my senses that I had just gathered.
It seemed that some protective and isolating measures had been applied to the walls, because even though the fighting outside had been exceptionally loud, the person inside remained remarkably calm. Of course, perhaps because they felt a slight vibration coming from the walls, the person seemed puzzled, pacing back and forth in the room.
"This door... doesn't seem to be something that can be opened by normal means."
Miyuki, who was about to yank the doorknob off, frowned, loosened her grip on the rickety metal handle, and retreated back to my side.
That's natural.
As a martial artist with little knowledge of techniques, Miyuki might only be able to barely perceive the anomaly wrapped around the object in front of her, but I could clearly discern from the door and walls in front of me a sealing technique that was almost as solid as if it were fused together.
I don't know how those roughnecks were planning to take care of her. It's like using methods meant to block the source of pollution on an ordinary, unremarkable woman. It makes you wonder if these guys have lost their minds.
