Chapter 274 Twisted

If things really develop to that point, if even the mountain that willingly served as a shield is knocked down by these few powerful attacks, then the remaining time will certainly not be enough for us to leave behind any thoughts that can serve as our wills.

Needless to say, this was the most dangerous moment I have ever personally experienced.

Although it is far less intense in terms of degree, the urgency is much stronger than when I fought the Sword Demon or was seriously injured by an unexpected sneak attack.

Fortunately, thanks to our tireless efforts, we managed to safely deflect the four arrows fired from the powerful bow.

Just one last bit more, the final arrow landed precisely on the dark silver surface of the body, leaving a swirling white dot before falling.

A strong feeling of exhaustion swept over my entire body after the successful interception.

But before we could relax again, an even stronger sense of crisis began to approach us once more.

After firing their arrows, the four guards in the distance decisively abandoned their powerful bows without even checking their aim, picked up sharp wooden spears lying around, and charged forward. By the time we had finally dealt with the previous wave of attacks, the guards, now unburdened, had already closed in on the cracked stone shell, and were about to bring it right up to us.

Should we change the mountain's posture and quickly break free from the status quo? A rigid body needs time to recover, and the enemy will never leave us any opening to counterattack.

Should we continue with the same approach as before, building layer upon layer of defenses to hold our ground? Leaving aside whether we can exchange these four guards, who are far less exhausted than us, for an unequal price, the other pursuers who are closing in might be even more delighted to see that.

This is equivalent to us giving up our advantages of being outnumbered and having good mobility, and instead cowering in place and passively taking a beating. Not only can the enemy use a war of attrition to wear down our already precarious resources, but they may also bring out far more powerful weapons than we have now. At that point, all that awaits us is our fate of being cooked.

The several barriers of trees that Sheng erected behind us failed to stop the spirits who were usually active in the forest for too long, and we were trapped inside the tortoise shell, only able to passively take the beating.

We need to come up with a solution. Should we try using that again? It seems very convenient for clearing the area. Even if it's somewhat dangerous, as long as we carefully control the area, we can at least try to prevent those around us from being affected.

The only problem is the huge energy consumption; after casting it, I'll be unable to move for a short time due to depleted mana. If I lose my fighting ability afterward, as long as there are still enemies who can move, I'll become a sitting duck.

Just as we were urgently weighing the gains and losses and trying to launch a counterattack, suddenly, in my perception, the guards who had already approached us and were surrounding us had all vanished.

Just as the literal meaning suggests, almost instantly, both the approaching spears carrying intense killing intent and the bodies of the elven guards scattered like ripped rags. The sword energy, tinged with a faint gray hue, swirled and circled around the nearly shattered stone shell, like a wolf guarding its prey, baring its white teeth and roaring at the approaching challenger.

The black figure fell from the treetop, stomping lightly on the stone shell. The already unbearable stone shell quickly shattered and fell. The mountain, which had been struggling to hold on, immediately knelt down, panting heavily, and sweat poured out, soaking its gradually fading dark brown clothes.

The figure that suddenly appeared twisted his brow, waved away the blood from the Dragon Slayer Sword, and jumped down from the self-untying vine net: "Can someone explain what's going on here?"

"Didn't you receive any emergency missions?"

Xiaoxi was surprised and instinctively opened her mouth to ask a question, but then immediately realized who she had just been talking to. Her face turned pale and she took half a step back from us.

Sword Demon's gaze briefly swept across the girl's face, his eyebrows furrowing: "What is that?"

"It was a sudden mission from a guy who calls himself the Joker," Sheng said calmly. "You weren't with us before, so it's normal that you didn't receive it."

It appears that the release of this task is subject to regional restrictions.

However, Sheng didn't seem to want to explain the mission in more detail. After a moment's thought, he quickly understood what Sheng was worried about.

This mission is clearly a good fit for the crazed sword demon.

If he goes berserk, we might all suffer the consequences.

However, perhaps sensing the subtle resistance revealed in Sheng's statement, or simply disliking those who interfered with the status quo, an extremely strong killing intent erupted around the black guy for a moment, like a tsunami rushing towards him.

One after another, heavy thuds sounded behind us. When we turned around, we saw that the elves who had been chasing us had suddenly fallen from the trees, their limbs twitching and foaming at the mouth, and they showed no signs of being able to control themselves or get up.

Even those who were initially unaffected panicked, showing fear for the first time since displaying their aggressive stance. Even as they trembled as they aimed their longbows, the arrows they fired were either weak and ineffective, or their aim was poor.

"Hmph, it's that kind of thing again."

The black-clad figure snorted coldly, walked past us, and drew the Dragon Slayer Sword he had just sheathed. His gaze was icy and lifeless, as if he were recalling something, or perhaps thinking of nothing at all.
