Chapter 34 Invitation

“When you were talking earlier, I asked around,” Miyuki said casually. “Most of the teams in front of us are just small groups carrying out ordinary hunting missions in the vicinity. The caravans entering the city are mostly from the south, or have returned after receiving a message. Therefore, as long as we confirm that there are no missing or incorrect goods and the information about monsters confirmed between leaving the city and returning, they can be put in directly, so the process is much faster.”

"As for those coming from the outer city, they are said to be invited to designated rooms for basic questioning and registration, which are nothing more than the usual questions: name, place of departure, and purpose. Of course, there seem to be other questions as well, but I don't know about them. There's no need to panic too much."

"Is this a unique rule of the Sacred Tree Barrier?"

I asked with some doubt, while trying to figure out what exactly was going on with the void gate that was trapping half of Hikari's body.

Honestly, I'm stunned again. While I don't know Hikari's progress in learning or how she activated the spell, this has once again entered a realm I can't grasp. Who would set the radius of the Void Gate to only half the standard size while simultaneously making its stability four times stronger?! Even my mentor would be dumbfounded. This arcane art should be taken back to the academy for a second chance!

While this makes the passage connecting the two sides incredibly stable, and it is almost impossible for it to be broken by external forces even if the magic transmission is no longer maintained, it also makes my efforts to interfere from the outside and expand its radius futile.

Of course, part of the reason is that my magic power is not currently at its best; otherwise, I could have tried other methods.

"It seems you'll have to maintain this stance for now."

I reluctantly let go of her hand and looked at the girl in front of me who had disappeared from the waist down and looked like she was floating in mid-air. After thinking for a moment, I took out a long cloak that could cover her body and put it on her.

At least it can prevent you from scaring others.

Meanwhile, Miyuki's explanation continued.

“After all, there have been several accidents before, or rather, malicious incidents planned by people.” Miyuki’s tone was calm. “The World Tree is a divine object that is coveted by many. Even without that veil of mystery, its value is still immeasurable. So some people want to possess it, or, driven by jealousy, do some irrational things.”

You mean...?

Seemingly pondering, Shen Xue answered after a while: "You should know about those fire worshippers who live in the southwest of the continent, right? Even in my remote hometown, I've heard of their evil deeds. They are said to be barbarians who live in the land of crimson flames year-round, worshipping fire as their totem and regarding returning to the flames as an honor. They are a savage race that is difficult to communicate with. Then, more than ten years ago, it is said that some of their members slipped out of that forbidden area and somehow ended up at the foot of the World Tree, almost setting the tree on fire."

"...I know about that."

Pulling Hikari, who was huddled behind me, I followed the team ahead step by step. It took me a long time to find some vague memories. I shook my head and said, "But after investigation, that incident was not related to those barbarians who never set foot out of the Crimson Flame Land."

"Huh?" This time it was Miyuki's turn to show a look of surprise.

Delving into the vague memories left from casually flipping through books, I continued, "If there were no fabrications or misjudgments, based on the records and information left at the scene, although those two troublemakers who caused a ruckus and seemed to have no connection with the barbarians were indeed caught at the scene, the truth is that their identities were fabricated at the behest of others. Their true identities were nothing more than two innocent villagers from a remote suburban village who were hired with a large sum of money to divert attention."

"Really?" Miyuki stared in astonishment, her voice momentarily losing control.

"I just happened to have read the relevant records. Only those who were there at the time know the specific facts."

As I spoke, I gave my name in response to questions from the two city guards on either side.

Then their expressions suddenly changed, and they looked at each other.

This made me somewhat wary, and then puzzled.

While it's true that some people know my name, that's mostly limited to the group of mages who have graduated from academies in recent years and some grand mages. How did these two even know my name?

My doubts were quickly answered.

Shortly after one of the city guards turned and went into the city, he quickly jogged back and gestured for me to enter: "Someone is waiting for you, Mr. Yumi."
