Just like the conditions I made with the Fairy Queen, I can allow them to stay temporarily in the Garden of Light and swear that I will not interfere with them or their kind. To me, this is just a cheap promise that I can give at will, but to them, it is a matter of paramount importance that is closely related to their future survival. In return, I need them to help the residents here to protect the city in the upcoming impact and to use their abilities to help me sort out the internal order of the Garden of Light.
As the flower fairy said, fairies are miracles created by life and probability. In such matters, there is no one more capable than fairies, who are inherently the most closely connected to living beings.
Well, this saved me some trouble and also got me a bunch of free labor in exchange for cheap promises—a really good deal. All that's left is to pack up and leave.
As for the problem of being too troublesome... well, we'll just divide them up and send them all over there, since fairies don't usually fly very far anyway.
"Please wait, Mr. Yumi."
I was about to leave the area of the city lord's mansion quickly, but before I had gone far, I heard a young man's voice, slightly panting, behind me.
“It’s that butler from before,” Hikari whispered in her ear.
The owner of the voice arrived quickly, overtaking me in just a few steps. He bent down slightly, one hand on his knee, the other gently lifting his slipped gold-rimmed glasses: "Ha... Excuse me, are you the one summoned by the Fairy Queen, Mr. Yumi? Please, wait a moment... Ha, our city lord has something to discuss with you."
“If it’s about the fairies, then I probably have nothing to say.” I glanced at the other person’s tailored tuxedo, which was slightly disheveled from the chase, and shook my head. “And if it’s about the World Tree, then we have nothing to talk about either. Please make it clear that it wasn’t me who accepted the quest to find it, but [Dawn] and the others.”
"...I know, but...maybe you just don't want to get into trouble?"
The young butler remained persistent, but his furrowed brow, pursed lips, and frequent glances back suggested that he might have been acting somewhat rudely at someone's behest: "We have never had the right to interfere in the affairs of fairies. It's a contract between all the residents of this city and the fairies since its founding. Whatever their final decision, whether they stay or leave, is not something we can interfere with. All we need is a word of permission."
"But there's a reason why we absolutely must ask you to take a look at the World Tree."
"Haven't you already sent out commissions to many capable individuals? Among them, there must be at least a dozen, if not hundreds, of people with special abilities. Some are good at tracking, some are good at prophecy, some are good at divination... Since so many people are already willing to help you, why bother coming to me, a mere student, or even a nobody little mage?"
I shook my head again, brushed past him, and prepared to leave.
There's no need to get involved any deeper.
Just like my initial thought, I just wanted to do things that I could do easily and live a normal, boring, but at least not too busy, leisurely life.
If we delve deeper, such ideas will gradually become insignificant due to external forces, and eventually shatter completely.
There's no need to become famous.
There's no need to do things you don't want to do.
My mother's words of advice, spoken before she sent me to college, suddenly echoed in my ears.
Hikari still obediently wrapped her arms around my neck, offering no objection to my decision. Instead, she counted on her fingers, muttering to herself how to escape Yao's scolding and training when we got back, and where to go and what to eat.
My intuition warned me to get away from it as soon as possible.
"if……"
"...Old butler!"
Just before I stepped out of the mansion's fence, amidst the surprised and respectful bows of the young butler and numerous guards, new footsteps, accompanied by the dull thud of a cane, landed softly behind me.
The aged yet dignified and resonant voice continued calmly: "What if I told you that this is the task [of the all-knowing Lord of the Silver Gate] would be accepted by you?"
"According to that person, all our questions can only be finally resolved with your assistance."
"Now, could you please take a few of your time to listen to our request?"
[The Omniscient Lord of the Silver Doors].
[Omniscient Witch].
My mentor.
Although I had some idea of what was going to happen, the things my advisor wanted me to do were probably more complicated than I had imagined.
But... I can't refuse.
Thinking about something that happened a year ago, standing in front of the gate that was just one step away from the outside world, I looked up at the thick, layered clouds in the distance and finally let out a long sigh.
"What's wrong?" the little fool asked in a low voice. "If Mr. Yumi doesn't like it, just ignore them. Just be happy on your own."
"Since we're already here..."
I shrugged, turned around, and stepped back into the manor, which was shrouded in twilight.
