As soon as I stepped through the open door, something came to mind.
A message I received from Hikari not long ago said that a terrifying housekeeper is waiting for my return, ready to give me a good scolding.
Is it too late for me to turn back the way I came?
But reality cruelly told me the answer to this question: it was too late.
Before I could even retract my foot, a familiar voice quietly rang out from behind the towering wall of books not far away.
"Master of the Box Garden, it's rare for you to come back, why are you in such a hurry to leave? Is it because you've done something wrong and are worried about being discovered? You can't possibly think I'm scary, can you?"
Uh... but this is really scary.
I forced a fawning smile and looked in that direction. Just then, a woman dressed in elaborate clothing looked up from the open pages of her book and stared straight at me.
Her gaze was so sharp that it gave me the illusion that a blade was lightly kissing my neck. If looks could kill, my head would probably already be in her hands, being repeatedly rubbed and toyed with.
"Come, sit down."
She gently beckoned and called out, like a young, loving mother, with a hint of a smile in her curved eyebrows, and gestured to the seat opposite me.
Under those jewel-like, sparkling eyes, I reluctantly moved slowly, shuffling along the edge of the chair to sit down. I subconsciously adjusted my posture, straightening my back, placing my hands on my knees, and keeping my eyes fixed on the marble floor, not daring to look upwards.
The crisp sound of a book closing startled me. Before I could even sit up and react, the book that Yao had just been reading was now supporting my chin and moving my head to one side.
In an instant, Yao's face suddenly came into my line of sight. I scrutinized him for a few seconds before finally letting go and stepping back.
"Yes, that's much better."
She sat back down, gracefully smoothing her skirt, her eyes lowered: "Well then, please tell me first, Master of the Box Garden. It's only been a few days, and you seem to have stirred up some pretty big trouble again. Even though I'm just here, I can't help but hear about it."
Yao's words surprised me greatly.
Isn't this my little garden? As a private little garden, its coordinates anchored in the void are known to very few people, except for messengers who can move freely but do not know how to calculate and rely entirely on instinct. As far as I know, none of Yao and the others have a contracted messenger. Without a way to communicate with others, how does she know about the outside world?
“Stop guessing. I already have a special information channel,” Yao glanced at me speechlessly. “Besides, Master of the Box Garden, you must have forgotten that this library contains all the books in the world.”
I was taken aback, then it dawned on me.
What are books? They are carriers of knowledge and mediums for the dissemination of information. The reason why people often find it difficult to obtain the information they want is simply because they cannot find a carrier that records the relevant knowledge, or because the relevant information has not been recorded and has been lost.
But within this vast library constructed by the authority of mentors, there are no conventional rules that can limit it. Words on paper can be made into books, life can be seen as a book that can walk, renew itself, and create, and the world itself can be seen as a vast book with history as its spine, where a myriad of colorful characters take the stage.
As for Yao, who is in this vast sea of books, if he wants to know my recent movements, he only needs to find the book with the corresponding content, without having to move an inch.
"...But wouldn't that make you seem like a voyeur?"
I stared at the elegant and poised beauty across from me with suspicion and uncertainty. The thought that she was secretly watching my daily life from a corner I hadn't noticed made me feel incredibly awkward, as if she could see right through me. Even a glance from the corner of my eye would send shivers down my spine, fearing that any thought I might have unknowingly crossed my mind would be seen through and I would be subjected to a merciless scolding.
Yao maintained a calm expression: "Master of the Box Garden, I can tell you very clearly that I am utterly despairing of how boring your daily life is. Besides, you're not one of those virtual pets I keep that might die of depression at any moment, so I have absolutely no desire to investigate or keep a close eye on you. Instead of worrying that I'm the one who would spy on you, you should think about who would use it for that kind of thing."
"And are you sure you want to keep going around in circles on this topic? Although I don't really mind."
Okay, I understand. I will reflect on my actions.
However, if that's the case, the only person who would use this kind of ability for spying... seems to be my mentor.
Someone like me, who's rather laid-back, would be too lazy to even look through a vast database of resources, not only because there's simply too much to read, but more importantly, because there's no table of contents! Without any clues or references, you'd have to go through each book slowly and carefully like Yao did. But that would take forever! With that time it takes to sift through thousands of books and find the information you need, I could have already made up my own!
As for my supervisor… well, even without her, she has other ways to keep an eye on me all the time. I'm almost desensitized to it. Let her watch, what can she do? It's not like she'll take a piece of my body away. Anyway, she's too high up to notice. At most, I'll just be a little more careful when I speak to others, so I don't get nagged at to my face when I get back.
I really can't resist a mentor who acts like a little girl!
