The instant I confirmed that the danger appearing in the distance was a chimera, many thoughts came to mind.
Without a doubt, chimeras are abnormal and unnatural creations, and have no possibility of reproduction or heredity. Only through unethical artificial creation can there be a slight chance of success.
In other words, is this incident being orchestrated by someone?
I felt a sense of absurdity, yet I had to confront this possibility.
There's a saying that's been circulating in academic circles: Don't let common sense and prejudice bind the wings of imagination.
There is never anything impossible; what exists only is flawed judgment and arrogant arrogance.
The existence of chimeras is strong evidence of this point.
However, I still find it hard to believe.
How has this illegal research, which was repeatedly halted since the beginning of recorded history, finally been revived a year ago when I personally witnessed and confirmed its complete eradication?
Could it be that even after that day, there were still some who escaped detection?
But that's impossible. After all, the mentor was present throughout the entire operation to monitor the overall situation, so even if I made a mistake, it wouldn't be the mentor's fault.
Or perhaps... the mentor deliberately let some of them go?
I was startled by the thought that arose from the bottom of my heart, and quickly and with lingering fear, I rejected it.
No, now is not the time to think about that. I told myself that. More questions can wait until later. The urgent matter at hand is how to deal with this chimera as quickly as possible while minimizing the impact.
Grabbing the eager [Frost Sword] that was about to charge out, I closed my eyes, took several deep breaths, and signaled to her to follow my command.
"You seem to know this particular monster."
[Frostsword]'s gaze was fixed on the chimera, but following my instructions, she temporarily suppressed her urge to rush out: "Chimera, is that it? I seem to have heard of it before."
Her gaze lingered on the vulnerable spots on the massive beast's body, as if trying to find its weakness.
“After all, it was a very famous creature in the past, and there are many rumors circulating in the countryside about chimeras that escaped from the laboratory and wreaked havoc everywhere. It’s not surprising that you’ve heard them,” I said. “However, you probably don’t know much about its attack patterns, so it would be very dangerous to attack it rashly.”
Miyuki tilted her head and gave me a questioning look.
"Ah, don't overthink it, I just happened to read about it in a book."
I reached for the test tubes tucked into my waistband, took one, and tucked it into my sleeve with the mouth of the tube positioned in the center of my palm for easy access. As I mumbled, "The reason why chimeras exist as a life form is because a hundred years ago, a wild mage, obsessed with prolonging his life and seeking eternal life, conducted a series of experiments after capturing a monster."
"Perhaps in his view, monsters are not only vigorous in life, but also powerful in both magic and physical strength, and they also possess a strong sense of beauty in their structure—anyway, it's a series of strange reasons, but no one knows the specifics now."
"In short, when he was certain that the experiment was nearing its end and that a perfect result was about to be achieved, he couldn't wait to use it on himself. Unfortunately, he misjudged the gap between his physical condition and that of the experimental subject. Halfway through the chimera material surgery, he experienced a severe and intense rejection reaction, which ultimately caused his body to condense and explode in a chaotic manner, killing him completely."
I clenched my fists together and then suddenly spread them out to the sides, simulating an explosion. Seeing this, Miyuki was speechless for a moment, then turned back, a leisurely whisper carried on the wind: "Indeed, mages are all a bunch of lunatics..."
Hey! How can you insult someone to their face like that?! I was listening in the background!
She then asked, "But if that's the case, this forbidden experiment should have been lost back then, and there shouldn't have been any more life forms like this since... What went wrong?"
"Ah, it's not really a problem." I recalled the ending of that story, "The experimental subjects used by that wild mage included not only monsters—you probably guessed it, right? One of them was his personal disciple."
"This disciple was always quite obedient. Even when he sensed something was wrong with his teacher, he still diligently maintained his original lifestyle, winning his teacher's favor. Therefore, the wild mage was not in a hurry to make a move against him. However, one day when he was sent out to buy things on his own, he found an opportunity and took some of the collected notes with him to seek refuge with another famous grand mage in a city a little further away. By the time the wild mage realized what was happening, he had already disappeared."
"And then what?"
"That's a cliché story," I shrugged.
Although he sought protection with sincerity, the disciple was unaware of the extremely dangerous information he was carrying. After a brief period of peace, he was like a short-sighted and ignorant fish swimming around sharks, unwittingly drawn into a dangerous vortex once again. And because of his past betrayal, this time his demise came extremely swiftly.
For both ordinary people and mages, knowledge is inherently wealth, but dangerous knowledge mixed within it is undoubtedly a deadly poison to be avoided at all costs. Even those at the pinnacle of power will perish upon contact with it.
I carefully described my proposed strategy to Miyuki, as well as some of the weaknesses of the Chimera that I had previously confirmed. After thinking for a moment, Miyuki nodded and gave me an affirmative answer, but she still had some dissatisfaction: "I thought I would be the main attacker, but I didn't expect to just be the one to hold them back."
