Chapter 56 Investigation

With information that I couldn't fully process in a short time, I opened the door and returned to the Sacred Tree Barrier.

Hikari seemed to be busy. I stood in the shadows of the nearby corridor and watched for a while. I saw the girl bustling back and forth, bringing towels and bandages to the rescue team who desperately needed help, and occasionally handing them warm water and medicine. Although she was busy and tired, she seemed to be enjoying herself. After confirming that I didn't need to worry about her, I finally chose to quietly leave.

It should be noted that although in modern society, with the advent of magic, even fatal injuries recorded in early texts have gradually been treated with appropriate and effective procedures, this is not something everyone can benefit from. Just as alchemical potions have a short-term tolerance, excessive exposure to magic or alchemical drugs can easily lead to a very difficult-to-treat condition called [magic poisoning].

Just like the incompletely converted magic power I experienced not long ago due to excessive absorption and ingestion of magic stones, these patients often suffer from an excess of magic power accumulating in their bodies. This magic power fails to form a suitable magic circuit, condensing into varying amounts and sizes of hardened magic lumps. This can then trigger multiple symptoms such as respiratory obstruction, acute thrombosis, limb paralysis, and organ failure. Without the assistance and guidance of someone with extremely strong control and skillful manipulation to expel these hardened magic lumps from the body while protecting the fragile body from harm, it is entirely possible that they could ultimately experience shock or even sudden death.

Therefore, before the formal development of the academic discipline of sorcerers, there was a period in history when sorcerers were regarded as heretics and even harmful. While such a label was indeed true for some, it also contained a great deal of prejudice and slander.

However, this has nothing to do with the reason why traditional surgery and even bandages are still used here. It's just that the wounded mercenaries and warriors are too noisy. They were only healed from the brink of death less than two minutes ago, and they were already waving their swords and guns, howling and wanting to rush out and show off their skills.

But once an injury is inflicted, it is inflicted. Even if broken bones can be set, they are never truly intact. The injured area will always retain the memory of the pain, and thus, in the ensuing fierce battle, it will ultimately bring back even more painful lessons—which is precisely the area that Alice, that scoundrel rabbit, excels at.

Since their legs and feet haven't fully recovered, how can we let those single-minded fools run around freely? For this reason, during non-critical battles, i.e., during the beast tide, in order to reduce the possibility of magic poisoning caused by magic overload in the future, rescue teams in major cities usually maintain traditional treatment methods while supplementing them with a small amount of magic to stimulate the wounds to heal on their own. This reduces the pressure on treatment and is also an invisible restriction and silent protection for those who are injured.

Of course, this doesn't include mages who have already set up magic arrays or martial artists skilled in using magic. These are the kind of people who can be revived even if they die; if they get overloaded, so be it.

As I said before, as long as the body and spirit are intact, we can always revive and reconnect.

It sounds so miserable, even worse than being a corporate slave.

Lost in thought, I finally found the room I needed among the rows of rooms. Before I even got close, I heard someone calling me from the shadows in the opposite corner.

"No need to look anymore, I've already asked for you."

Leaning against a white pillar entwined with flowering vines, Miyuki stood in the shadows under the eaves, clutching her sword. A breeze swept through the corridor, brushing against her long hair, causing the glistening strands to sway gently, a few glimmering with a translucent, icy light, as if a blooming ice-colored flower had blossomed in mid-air.

How did you know what I was going to do?

I turned my head in surprise and peeked into the room through the small glass window in the door. The gunner who had roared and launched a death charge at the chimera not long ago was now lying quietly, with a deep look of exhaustion on his face—I'm ashamed to say that he shouldn't have been injured.

I had predicted the landing point and intended to land him in a meadow with thicker vegetation to reduce potential injuries. However, the range of the spell I released was too large, and the violent explosion affected the surrounding environment. He was also within the blast radius, which caused the landing point to shift outwards. He was flipped over and crashed into several small trees. When I rescued him from the treetops, I discovered that he had broken two ribs.

But at least the person was saved, wasn't they?

“But he doesn’t thank you.” Miyuki interrupted my self-consolation in her usual indifferent tone. “Or rather, you thwarted his possibility of suicide.”

I was stunned: "Life is so wonderful, why would you want to die?"

I really don't understand this. I've made almost three long wish lists, and I haven't even been able to complete the first eight items yet.

If I had the time, and if someone were willing to take on all the trouble I'm dealing with right now, I would definitely retreat to my little garden and play games for seven days and seven nights straight!

"Who knows? Maybe his life has lost all meaning for him."

Miyuki's tone was leisurely: "I asked him, and according to him, he originally came from the west to acquire assets for rebuilding his destroyed hometown, accompanied by four or five familiar companions. After the competition rules were changed, his companions wanted to back out and find another way because they were worried about their own abilities, but he chose to stay and persuaded everyone to help."

"But their dream was shattered just as it began: not long after leaving the city, they encountered a chimera in search of food. His companions died behind him to cover his escape, unable to put up even the slightest resistance, while he only survived because the chimera had had its fun."
