Chapter 58 Group Cleanup Operation (Part 2)

That makes sense.

Monsters are mostly transformed from ordinary animals, naturally possessing the instinct to seek advantage and avoid harm. However, after transforming into a monster, this instinct transforms into intense aggression. It's as if their brains have been forcefully controlled by some external will, altering the instinct to avoid danger into a frenzied attack on other life forms that have invaded a certain range.

Naturally, the abnormal deaths of monsters in the surrounding area made them sense the impending danger, causing them to attack prematurely.

Fortunately, this was only a small portion of the area that was already roaming nearby, and the city had been prepared for this.

"However, I didn't expect that we were actually the second layer of defense..."

Looking out five meters away, at the exhausted squad struggling to cope with the onslaught of numerous demons, I casually summoned a bolt of lightning and swiftly pierced the battlefield, shattering the pack of demonic wolves that were about to attack them from behind.

"Perhaps the person who arranged the formation subconsciously distrusted us after seeing that we were escorted back by the emergency medical team that was dispatched earlier."

Shen Xue sneered, and with the same nonchalant gesture, she drew her sword. As she swung it, streaks of pale light flew into the distance, steadily shattering the skulls of several eagles and demonic monkeys.

Oh well, I'm happy to be lazy.

The swordsman and archer, who were assigned to the same group, were sandwiched between us, holding their weapons and looking around blankly, as if they didn't know what to do.

Naturally, this was because all the monsters that noticed the open space and tried to sneak in to attack were cleared out by Miyuki and me. Miyuki was responsible for the front and close range, while I mainly took care of the flanks and long range. The two people who had the same assignment as us were genuinely willing to help, and I could clearly feel that from their actions. They weren't just lazy bums who chose to stand still and slack off after being matched with teammates who could carry them through challenges of higher levels.

Unfortunately, despite their impressive swordsmanship and archery skills, they still failed to achieve much. In comparison, the swordsman's attack strength was weaker than Miyuki's, the archer's attack range was shorter than mine, and their overall attack speed and reaction speed were inferior to ours. After several tentative attacks, they could only stare blankly at the small patch of empty space around them.

Their gazes shifted several times to the other nearby teams, where swarms of foxes were toying with smaller teams lacking sufficient mobility and ranged attacks, gradually eroding their strength and patience. But perhaps fearing the bad reputation of abandoning their teammates, they hesitated several times, choosing not to go directly, but instead lingering in place, constantly casting glances at me and Shenxue.

Although we never expected them to contribute much, it's really unfair to restrict them like this and force them to be slackers in the team.

I naturally understood these people's desire for battle, or rather, for the rewards they would earn through military exploits. Otherwise, why would they leave the safe walls of the city to engage in such a life-or-death struggle? So I simply waved my hand, adding a simple layer of protection for them, and signaled: "Don't worry too much about us. Just do what you're supposed to do. Also, remember not to stray too far."

Then the two exchanged a glance, nodded slightly, and quickly joined the battle on the side, picking up two lone foxes and engaging in a series of seemingly dangerous and fierce fights.

Not long after they stepped out of the city gates, the battle here was already showing signs of intensifying.

But everyone knew that these were merely scattered vanguards drawn by the spreading blood energy, lacking even a sense of community and often hindering each other. The truly troublesome opponent had yet to appear.

Magic vibrates the air.

I glanced back and saw six or seven dazzling arrows of light pierce through the fierce demon bear's defenses and flesh, creating a fist-sized hole before piercing through several small beasts that were charging towards us from afar.

At the core of the formation, five students, brought by their instructor for support, took the lead, while the other four, a body length behind, spread out on either side, casting their signature small spells to provide support. The magic circles that converged around them emitted a faint light, sometimes brightening and sometimes dimming as they murmured and repeated incantations, yet always echoing each other.

The concentrated water guns and wind blades swiftly sliced through the oncoming horde of beasts, like cut straw, sending support to the surrounding squads in order of danger to safety.

Behind them, a middle-aged male teacher with at least two ounces of muscle stood by with a serious expression, arms crossed. His sharp, eagle-like eyes constantly scanned the area, occasionally scolding a student for a mistake during a performance, but most of the time he remained silent, with tiny sparks of electricity flashing in his palms close to him.

I observed silently for a while longer. Although most of the trainees were flustered due to facing real combat for the first time, few made mistakes in their choice of spells. Most used light, water, wind, or earth as their primary elements, with few using fire or its extension, lightning. Perhaps they were worried about not having enough control and causing a forest fire; at least it was a correct choice.

"It seems that the students are generally of good quality, and this batch will be processed soon," I thought optimistically.

Miyuki glanced at her suspiciously: "Why do you sound like this is the first time you've learned about your classmates' level? Didn't you say before that you were in the same year as them?"

Undeniably, she is right.

Aside from my two close friends and a few celebrities at the school, this was truly the first time I had ever learned about the skill levels of the students my age: "I basically skip classes unless absolutely necessary. Just give me a library and a training ground, and I can learn on my own."
