Chapter 142 The Ominous Bird
An ominous bird call suddenly echoed through the empty hall.
Everyone immediately went on high alert, scrutinizing every possible hiding place, but they still couldn't find the source of the sound.
However, what terrified everyone present even more than the source of the birdsong was the dark spots that suddenly spread from the center of the broken disc.
The tiny spot seemed to possess a real life force; the moment the disc stopped, it rapidly devoured the other nearby colors, assimilating them into a murky black color just like itself.
Soon, after all the surfaces of the disc were dyed a similar color, signs of outward seepage appeared.
Like a greedy beast, or like dirty water accidentally spilled while cleaning the mop. The ever-flowing ink-like liquid left muddy marks, and even without the pungent stench, the slight sinking sensation underfoot sent a chill down one's spine, making one want to stay far away from the intrusion.
"What's this?"
Xiaoxi frowned, and the crossbow pointing at the ground trembled slightly.
She had just tentatively shot two arrows into the pool, and unsurprisingly, the arrows sank into the ever-expanding black pool without any resistance, without even a sound, let alone any ripples.
"I shouldn't have trusted those liars."
Sheng muttered angrily, his brows furrowed.
[My lovely little deer, I never said that the very center point couldn't be chosen.]
The whispers of the demon [Mephisto] seemed to echo in my ears, drifting and elusive, the direction from which the sound came could not be discerned.
But without a doubt, that mischievous guy was still in that space, smiling and looking down at our panicked state with amusement.
"Never mind him, let's first find out what's going on right now."
I withdrew my fruitless senses and flicked several more condensed fireballs into the hole, but they only splashed up small water droplets and failed to cause any further damage.
“It doesn’t look like a corrosive liquid.” Sheng held up the crowbar that was abruptly shortened by half, somewhat helplessly. “But it seems to be very disadvantageous in close combat… except for that one.”
Following Sheng's gaze to the side, the sword demon, desperately throwing air blades into the spreading pool of water, came into view. Compared to the rapidly spreading black sewage that was unable to be stopped, the black water blasted apart by the air blades seemed to be gathering much more slowly, revealing a marble floor that looked as if it had been blackened by smoke in the fragmented areas.
But he quickly stopped maintaining the air blade, panting as he took a few steps back, his jaw clenched, staring at the black pool that was rapidly returning to its original state.
Sheng shrugged: "Okay, obviously, this is also a no-go."
The disc, swallowed by the darkness, had melted into a puddle, mingling with the black water. The turbulent water gushed out from an unknown source, climbing up the pillars of the display stands where the exhibits had disappeared, and spreading into the distance.
We watched as the strange phenomenon unfolded uncontrollably, slowly retreating in fear of disturbing the Blackwater, while carefully observing everything that was happening before our eyes.
It seems that after the Blackwater expanded to a certain extent, everything changed.
First, tiny protrusions emerged from the black pool, tinged with a dull, earthy yellow. Then, the ink-black hue that clung to the pillars was punctuated with strokes of dark brown and violet.
Then, the swallowed sky also took on an unusual color, like a deep blue mixed with bright orange, lemon yellow and bright red, and large clusters of white also gathered together, illuminating the swallowed sky once again.
In the distance, the tall ridges were illuminated by silvery light and pale green, while everything in the foreground seemed to sink into shadow, appearing even darker against the backdrop of the background.
"It looks like a painting."
Xiaoxi was the first to express her feelings: "The flowing clouds, the bright stars and moon, the cypress trees backlit by the light, and the distant town and the most prominent church in the town."
“It’s ‘Starry Night’,” Sheng concluded. “I never expected it to be this painting.”
"Is there anything special about this painting?" I asked, noticing that the sword demon, who had been on guard the whole time, had tilted his head slightly, as if listening to the discussion.
"I wouldn't say it's anything special, it's just that it's very famous." Sheng stroked his chin, lowered his head and fell into deep thought. "Compared to paintings that are more realistic, 'Starry Night' is composed of dots and lines, and has a flowing texture. Perhaps that's why it was constructed by that strange pool of black water."
"Tsk... This is really not an easy opponent to deal with than initially expected."
"Your initial estimate?" I asked, somewhat puzzled. "What was that?"
“At first I thought it would be ‘The Advent of Our Lady’ or ‘The Seven Deadly Sins and the Final Four’. If all else fails, ‘Sisyphus’ and ‘Heaven’s Gate’ would also be good opponents.” Sheng shook his head and spread his hands. “Although they are all difficult to deal with, they are not without ways to break them… But for this one, I can only guess.”
I can only surrender to this.
I don't understand what it means at all.
Xiaoxi, on the contrary, looked utterly surprised, and Jian Gui's expression twisted to varying degrees as Sheng uttered those four names. It was probably not a pleasant memory for him.
Indeed, for someone trapped in a predicament, everything is difficult, even hostile or malicious.
