Chapter 73 Testing and Countering

Entering the room was an elderly gentleman dressed in understated luxury and wearing chain-link glasses.

Her long, gray hair was neatly tied back, and she held a cane inlaid with pure crystal and silver decorations. The mirror made of clear crystal reflected a soft glow under the light, and a dreamlike radiance seemed to emanate from nearby, but upon closer inspection, it was nowhere to be found.

With an elegant and proper smile on his lips, he nodded gently and greeted everyone in the room in turn, behaving like a refined and dignified old gentleman.

"This is Professor Adrian, whom I introduced to you before!"

Princess Grey excitedly rushed to the center of the private room, placed one hand on the table, and her crimson eyes sparkled brightly: "Honestly, I am so glad that I chose to take the astrology and illusion courses taught by the professor! It is thanks to this that I have been able to see many beautiful sights that are rarely seen in normal times and to learn a lot of knowledge that I never knew before!"

"If it weren't for the greater appeal of the experiments I already have, I would almost certainly switch my focus to Professor Adrian!"

"Hehehe... It's a privilege to hear such praise from Gray, which means I've lived up to my original intention in offering this course."

"But I never expected that a casual idea to go out for a meal would lead to running into a student who had taken my class. It seems like today might be my lucky day."

Adrian performed a gentlemanly bow with gentleness and humility, which eased the tension and anxiety of the two students who had been nervous about the sudden appearance of their teacher. They then tentatively approached him to start a conversation.

However, compared to the enthusiasm of the younger students, my reaction and Yale's reaction were much colder.

Upon closer examination, it's not hard to understand.

I'm not usually keen on dealing with people I don't know well, and now that I'm surrounded by a group of juniors I don't know very well, plus after the conversation with my mentor and the dean, I'm even more wary and scrutinizing of Adrian who suddenly appears before me.

Ale's reason was simpler. This guy was only interested in research and monsters, and because of his research, he was ostracized by most of the monster-threat-the-schools. If he hadn't been asked to sit here, he probably wouldn't be here at all.

I even noticed that after Adrian entered, Ale's gaze only lingered on him for a moment before he lowered his head again, busying himself with teasing the white weasel in his arms, gently kneading its little paws, looking completely mesmerized.

This monster is completely hopeless.

With a sigh, I prepared to get up.

After all, there's something the headmaster asked me to do, so this is a great opportunity to get close to Adrian naturally, saving me the trouble of being wary of him if I try to approach him later.

Judging from his current performance, Professor Adrian does indeed give the impression of a kind, gentle, and enthusiastic professor who is eager to teach his students.

He was humorous and witty during the conversation, speaking elegantly and gracefully, unhurriedly, and clearly. He even took care of the students who were hesitant to speak nearby, listening attentively to their tentative questions and patiently providing clear and understandable answers. Even in churches that only exist in past records, he would likely have risen to the rank of cardinal, or even higher, with remarkable speed.

But that's just how it appears.

Because I didn't join the conversation at the beginning, I could clearly see from the sidelines his focus during the conversation: his body leaned slightly towards the side where Princess Grey was from the start, and although his gaze was subtle, it was also more focused on her. He made eye contact with the girl several times, and even when answering her questions, he talked a few more words than when answering others, subtly seducing and arousing more interest in the girl.

I must admit that he did indeed act like a good professor, but with biased views and additional information, his bias became obvious.

Then, a question popped into my head, and I got an answer.

Did he really just happen to go out and choose to come to this shop by chance to prepare lunch in advance?

The answer is no.

Adrian's target is Grey.

So, what is it about Grey that would make the other party care?

Considering Adrian's recent frequent participation in underground auctions and his purchase of a large amount of equipment—two pieces of information whose veracity is currently unknown—and the fact that Princess Grey is the most favored granddaughter of the current head of the Wan Jin Merchant Guild, it is possible that what he needs is a large amount of money, or some extremely rare materials or artifacts that are difficult to obtain quickly through ordinary channels.

However, what does he need these things for, and what is he going to do with them?

The question, having progressed to this point, suddenly becomes an empty question mark.

There is no information that leads directly and clearly to this point, only a few scattered speculations built on the hollow tower.

The dean's self-talk reveals an unease stemming from a premonition of Adrian's potential downfall; the tutor, while seemingly acquiescing to Adrian's application to host a practical activity, also adds an extra option; and undercover investigations reveal that Adrian has recently been frequently in contact with unidentified individuals…

Everything presents a confusing and unknown state, as if something is about to happen, yet nothing will happen at all.

But I know full well that this is nothing more than an empty skeleton erected without a foundation. If I simply overturn or remove one of the key components, the entire line of reasoning will be shattered out of thin air.
