Chapter 149 Territorial Wars (Part Two)

I couldn't be sure if it could withstand the enemy, because the defensive barriers set up along the way were only meant to slow down the monsters that might rush towards us. With such a purpose, their defensive performance was still questionable, at most only slightly stronger than the underground roller shutter door.

I briefly explained the situation to Sheng, and then quickly walked towards the nearby spiral staircase, asking her if there was a balcony or window from which I could clearly see the surrounding terrain.

Having also learned of the current crisis, Sheng didn't waste any more words. He simply told me that I could check the open space in front of and to the right of the library from the left corridor on the second and third floors, and that I could see the other two areas from the platforms on the third and fifth floors. Then he hurriedly ran towards the family who had survived the disaster.

"I'm going to mobilize the defense efforts!"

As he spoke, his figure, which appeared even smaller than those around him, swiftly and nimbly darted into the small groups of people chatting and disappeared in a flash.

Time was of the essence, so I didn't bother to confirm his location any further. I spread out my senses and quickly found the corridor he had mentioned, and hurried there as well.

Rather than a balcony or corridor, this area might be more accurately described as the patterned structure surrounding the slightly rounded shape of the library. Above is a semi-circular, protruding transparent rain shelter, and underfoot is a smooth, wave-like structure, with a small portion exposed on the outside and enclosed by railings, within which perfectly placed semi-circular seats are embedded.

Without taking the time to appreciate the design concept further, I stepped directly onto the edge and looked out into the distance.

On the way we came, in the open space covered with weeds, abnormal lines had appeared.

Like a brief calm before the tide, tiny bubbles, carried by the surging waves, lapped against the reefs one after another. Though barely visible, they hinted at an unsettling prelude.

A canine, resembling both a dog and a wolf, far larger than any normal creature, rapidly approached. Apart from the rustling of the grass, there was not a single other sound.

Perhaps they came this way, drawn by the scent of people.

After all, it was a large-scale movement, and even though I tried to let the wind dissipate the scent on my body along the way, I couldn't hide it from these predators with their keen sense of smell.

In addition, we had dealt with quite a few insects and a few wolfhounds that had unexpectedly discovered us on the way. As animals with strong gregarious characteristics, they were more likely to be chasing after prey that might have killed their brethren.

Of course, the most important reason might also be that we are relatively close to their habitat.

I couldn't confirm the distribution of life within that suddenly appearing woodland. My senses could only barely extend slightly outwards behind the moving group, unable to penetrate any deeper. To gain further confirmation, I would inevitably need to leave the group and venture further in.

According to the information I gleaned from Sheng, in some corner of the jungle that he is unaware of, the overlord of this jungle is quietly taking hold, and is even more troublesome than the boss of the hidden dungeon that we dealt with together before.

"Because that guy will also have his own mission later." This was Sheng's statement in an attempt to stop me from leaving the team.

Okay, for the sake of temporary safety, let's proceed with the tasks at hand in order.

Having confirmed once again the speed at which the enormous dogs were approaching, I summoned lightning and fire in my palm, preparing to throw it down and kill the pack of dogs before they crossed the wasteland.

"—Don't throw it away yet!"

Sheng's slightly out-of-breath, voice cracking exclamation came from not far behind.

I froze for a second, then quickly detonated the fireball I had instinctively thrown in mid-air. Ignoring the chorus of panicked barking below, I took a breath and frowned as I looked behind me: "Why did you stop me?"

Seemingly having rushed over, Sheng leaned on his knees, panting heavily for a few seconds. He then quickly pulled out a water bottle from his waist and took a small sip before finally calming down enough to explain, "Big brother, you... you shouldn't be so quick to cool down. Right now, what's coming is just the first wave of demonic hounds. If we all work together, we can definitely handle it. If you get so angry, then we'll be useless!"

I was speechless: "But wouldn't this be faster? It would also allow the people who were just transferred to rest a little longer."

“Indeed, that method is very efficient, but you also need to rest, brother. You’ve been on guard the whole way. If you continue to wear yourself out like this in the long battle to come, your body and mind will not be able to take it.”

I raised an eyebrow and glanced at the group of people who were quickly approaching from behind Sheng. It was obvious that they were all equipped with long-range weapons.

This was probably something Sheng said in order to impress others.

I gestured for Sheng to come over, and we moved to the other side together. I saw him nod, instruct the [Duheng] organization, which had already recovered, to conduct defensive operations in the open area in front of him, and then he moved briskly towards this side.

"So, what's your plan?"

I asked the question directly.

This corner was conveniently located in a blind spot slightly behind the people in front, and with the continuous sounds of arrows and orders providing cover, no one would notice us huddled here, nor would they hear our whispers.

Sheng grinned, scratching the back of his short, light blue hair with one hand: "Let me first explain why I stopped my brother from casting the spell earlier."

"The reason for maximizing our efforts is that we need a group of people who can also gain experience to assist our defensive operations, because this territorial war is a protracted war that will last for three days. It is impossible for just one or two people to maintain it, even if this building is the best to defend here."
