Chapter 42 The Waiter

I understand now! This damned creation is just as despicable as its creator!

All that talk of being a butler and serving is fake; they're just here to play tricks on me!

Following the rabbit's tail, we soon came into view the long hall that had been converted into a restaurant.

"Ah, failed, failed~ I still got caught." Alice, whose ears were being pulled, swayed innocently from side to side, her ruby-like eyes casting a pitiful look—why does this rabbit have such expressive features? "It seems poor Alice will perish here today, becoming a pot of fragrant and spicy rabbit soup~ Slurp, too bad I won't get to eat any myself, slurp."

"Stop fooling around!"

I scolded her, and Alice quickly dropped her pretentious act, looking at me with a smile.

"In short," it even slowly summarized the previous paragraph, "unless one is able to formally embark on the path of eternity, or obtain full access to this library and even its index, then your lifespan, which has not yet been extended, is simply not enough to read all the books here. Only the creator can take a shortcut and manage to barely scoop up the bowl of water needed from the ocean, even though there will still be errors."

"Full permissions?"

I pondered the key my mentor had given me, saying that I had never seriously studied it since receiving it, and perhaps I could make some discoveries from it.

“But I still have a question.” I lifted the rabbit up and looked into its eyes. “Why is it that you and the other maids feel completely different from the other puppets created by Yao? Compared to those who are more like being controlled by Yao, your self-awareness seems to be much clearer.”

"Ah, did you notice? No wonder she's a master I can entrust my life to." Her three-lobed lips trembled, whether from joy or some more intense emotion, it was hard to tell. "Well, all I can say is that Alice is Alice, and Alice is made of cloth and cotton, and sugar and love. Unlike those big, clay lumps, which, even when broken, only produce hollow echoes."

It seemed unwilling to continue, swaying as it looked towards the gate not far away, changing the subject: "Alright, master, it's time to enjoy your breakfast. It'll get cold if you wait too long."

"Oh! Someone has come to pick you up."

As soon as it finished speaking, the door in front of me suddenly swung open, and Hikari jumped out and happily pounced on me, hanging around my neck—if I hadn't instinctively taken a step back, we would have both fallen to the ground.

"Good morning, Mr. Yumi! I came to open the door as soon as I heard your voice!" Hikari sent a warm greeting.

I patted the little rascal's head, gestured for her to get off my neck, and asked, "Did something good happen?"

“Yes!” Hikari nodded vigorously. “Yao-jie said she would send someone with us—ah! What an adorable little bunny! It’s even wearing a butler’s uniform!”

"I'm not some cute little bunny, I'm Alice, and I'm Laifu—Wow!"

I was not surprised to see Alice being picked up by Hikari with delight, and then they started playing games of lifting and tossing her high. After hearing Alice's voice, Hikari was even more delighted and flew her even higher, which was met with a series of terrified screams.

"I...I'm...very amazing!"

Alice, who was pulled back to her, breathed heavily, describing it as feeling as if her soul was about to fly out of her body. She was still dizzy and didn't know where a puppet's soul came from.

Anyway, I think I understand now. Next time I encounter this type of being, I can just send Hikari in; no matter how arrogant she is, she'll be completely subdued.

With a slightly pleasant feeling of having found the ace, I walked into the restaurant, only to be suddenly embraced by a petite, dark figure—correction, her entire face was covered.

I frantically peeled it off and saw the cat, whom I hadn't seen in a long time, pitifully clinging to my arm. The speckled head was spinning rapidly, and vibrant colors were slowly seeping from several large gashes on its trembling body.

"Oh no, this is terrible~" the rascal rabbit exclaimed, sounding like something was terribly wrong.
