[Sudden Mission #49: Let's Dance!]
Glancing at the notification box, still tinged with a glaring dark red, we hurried through the dim forest before we could even process what was going on.
A cacophony of subtle noises swept overhead, and every now and then a rain of sharp arrows flew from the depths of the forest, splashing at the feet of those who barely managed to avoid them.
The shield overhead was struck violently, the dense sound was ear-piercing, like huge raindrops struggling to fall with their own weight, and the hard-won cover would be shattered in an instant.
Nowhere is safe.
This is a settlement that the elves know all too well.
“Turn right 25 meters ahead, watch out for the forest rangers who are closing in.”
The Shadow Butterfly, which was leading the way, left behind a short message, then disappeared from sight with a few leaps. Soon after, a heavy thud was heard from the bushes not far away.
Sheng, who was leading the way, glanced at it and a wry smile flashed across his face: "She's really quick."
"Wasn't that the very reason we decided to recruit her?"
Without time to examine it closely, I casually tossed out the lightning bolt I was holding. The noise from the electric arc was incessant, and the arrow I shot was instantly incinerated before it even reached me. It also affected the archer who was chasing after me, stunning and paralyzing him, making it difficult for him to pursue me for a short time.
Fifi, displaying superb skills, hovered above our heads, nimbly dodging attacks flying towards it. With a gentle flick of its tail, it left behind a trail of golden-red sparks, obscuring our vision and igniting a high wall of flames behind us.
When lives are threatened, it's no longer a matter of whether to show mercy or whether doing so is actually damaging vegetation.
The elves, who had been friendly just moments before, now wore either ferocious or ruthless expressions, silently running through the forest, flanking from all sides without asking any further questions or hesitating. Each attack they made was a fatal blow.
An ominous dark red hue flickered in sync with the calm breathing, flashing deep within the pupils that should have been fresh and green, creating an eerie atmosphere.
It was as if one had accidentally stumbled into the den of wolves in the dead of night, or in a panicked escape into a forbidden zone where monsters slept. Surrounded by glaring eyes, the intense hostility and killing intent mixed together, creating an unparalleled sense of oppression.
If the people present hadn't been so accustomed to this situation and able to deal with it calmly, they would probably have been killed by these cold-blooded killing machines long ago.
Even the guards who had been monitoring us joined the pursuit. Their superior skills forced us to dodge left and right, preventing us from engaging them head-on. We feared that if we stopped, we would lose our only chance to escape.
Even the counterattacks were only carried out when we still had some energy, with no expectation of achieving anything. The goal was simply to buy us some time so that we could break through the encirclement and reach our desired position.
Now, it's been fifteen minutes since we all received that damned emergency mission and fled the party that suddenly turned into a dangerous situation.
No one was without injuries.
Fortunately, no one was injured in their legs or vital organs, and at least they were able to escape without any problems.
The bleeding problem was temporarily stabilized halfway by covering it with flames and scorching it. It was hard to guarantee that it wouldn't burst open, but although it was painful, it was better than losing too much blood and the strength to escape later.
And we still haven't been able to find the Sword Demon who was separated from us before.
It wasn't that we were deliberately looking for him. That lone wolf left before the gathering even started, and we don't know where he went or what he did. Wandering aimlessly through this unfamiliar settlement would only make him a laughingstock and put him in danger. Besides, he might be able to act more freely alone than when he was with us.
"I still don't understand, ha, why those guys suddenly attacked us."
Xiaoxi, who was following closely behind, turned around and fired an arrow. Regardless of whether it had any effect, she tried to calm her breathing and quickly asked, "Weren't we all fine before? We were even chatting and laughing. Some of them even kindly asked us if we wanted to come to their homes while we were waiting at the entrance... Was all of that just a lie?"
She seemed somewhat uneasy and asked hesitantly, "And, what you said before, that the Great Sage was killed by us, is that not true?"
"We didn't do it, you can rest assured about that. And you can certainly assume that the cause of this matter has nothing to do with their intentions."
Sheng glanced back at his side, then raised his hand and shot a vine in that direction.
The flying spear was knocked down and split in two from the center, then quickly moved forward in the direction it came from, striking the face of the person attempting a sneak attack, causing them to fall silently.
He then pointed out, "Did you notice this notification box that's been flashing in the corner of our field of vision? It looks different from usual, doesn't it? It also made us feel uncomfortable when it appeared."
Xiaoxi nodded, then realized that Sheng couldn't see her from in front of her, so she quickly added a short affirmation.
"This is evidence that those damn bastards have interfered with the current situation, the one who was mentioned earlier."
The boy clicked his tongue slightly, and several shimmering green orbs that had been hovering nearby shot into the interior of a nearby tree, causing it to instantly swell. The sounds of cracking bark, rustling canopies, and the screams of elves falling from above, caught off guard, mingled together, briefly halting the onslaught of attacks.
