Chapter 5 Beginner Quests

As she spoke, she turned her head and pointed to a spot not far away. There, she saw a tired-looking burly man with a terrified-looking young man bound behind him. The young man's unbound limbs were twisting wildly in the air, and despite the blood flowing from his mouth, he was still shouting incoherently.

The white-robed apostles, who had been waiting near the porch for a long time, quickly stepped forward. After exchanging silent nods, they swiftly and skillfully untied him from the big man's back, put him in specially made clothes, lifted him up by the head and tail, and quickly carried him to the temporary tent not far away.

"If you don't want to end up like that, but still insist on finding that somewhat problematic tree, then I advise you to at least pull yourself together." The white fox stopped at the outer city gate, its wagging tail deliberately patting my calf. "I'm talking to you, you idiot. If something happens to you, not only will I be in trouble, but even Da Bai will have a hard time explaining to the two behind you."

"What could possibly happen to me?" I couldn't help but yawn again. "I just came along to help out, ask some questions, and at most, I'm just a mouthpiece. Besides, this time it's just to check things out, take a quick look around, and leave. I'm not the main force for the subsequent exploration; after all, the three of them took on the mission, and they'd have to pay me extra for doing my work. What could possibly happen to me?"

The white fox tilted its head and swayed its tail casually twice: "That's good."

She thought for two seconds, then suddenly turned her head and bit her waist. With a sharp pull, she ripped off a few rather long and thin, transparent hairs, and gestured for us to come closer. She then bent down and licked each of her drooping fingers once.

Seeing the dog hair tied into a loop, the white fox nodded and stepped back a few paces with satisfaction.

"Let me reiterate this again, so you won't hold a grudge later."

“I’m currently restricted by Big White and can’t leave the city for the time being, so I can’t go out with you. But I’ve already told you the address and how to get there. After you go up that hill outside, go through the woods, and walk ten steps west. You’ll see another small hill over the top, and that’s it.” The white fox paused, then continued, “And these two tufts of fur are from my body. That’s all, don’t expect more. But they have my ability to see through illusions, so don’t lose them. Consider it as me helping you out, and that I did my part.” As she spoke, she suddenly turned her back, not looking in their direction. “I was thinking of having you help me find a comb and then just pluck some fur off, so at least I could get more without it hurting. Now… I guess I’ll just have to make do with these.”

I glanced silently at the dog hair that was forcibly smeared together with saliva, and bowed my head to express my gratitude to her.

Hikari, on the other hand, was more direct. With a howl, she pounced on the white fox and gave it a bear hug, ruffling its fur while pulling it into her arms and cuddling it repeatedly. The dog was startled and struggled incessantly.

"Oh right, did you just give me your precious comb like that?" I suddenly remembered this.

"Didn't you say you knew an expert who could fix it? Once it's fixed, remember to bring it to us next time you pass through Piss." The white fox wagged its tail, struggling to escape the suffocating love. "Aww—let go!"

As they parted, Hikari, with tears in her eyes, waved goodbye to the white fox who had broken free from her embrace and disappeared into the distance. She said she would come to see him again next time, but the white fox quickly shook his head and disappeared without a trace.

Soon, we headed out of the city again.

The tedious and boring journey was really nothing to talk about, and even the little beast that would occasionally pop up to pass the time had inexplicably disappeared.

It was probably plowed up by wave after wave of people who came.

I could only cling to this optimistic thought, while trying to imagine myself as a player controlling a character named Yumi in a higher dimension. Right now, I had just received my first quest after leaving the starting village and was walking on a rugged and desolate path leading to a nearby monster spawn point.

Otherwise, I'm really afraid I'll fall asleep halfway there, or simply lose all motivation and choose to go back to the miniature garden to catch up on sleep.

The next moment, I suddenly woke up.

The space was dimly lit.
