"By the way, did you receive the thing I asked Gulu to pass on to you before?"
He casually disintegrated the empty pudding bucket into harmless light fragments, and in the air filled with a faint milky fragrance, the mentor, lying lazily on Pupu who happened to be passing by, stretched his waist like a cat and asked a question in a declarative tone.
I thought for a moment: "...that strange parchment scroll?"
Seeing my advisor nod, I brought up another thing I had forgotten.
As I mentioned before, after dealing with that unusual beast horde riot, I stayed inside the Sacred Tree Fortress for a while longer.
Not to mention the extra rewards and gratitude I received during my negotiations with Anran, during the time when only a few monsters scattered outside the city had not left with the retreating beast tide, I not only circled the surrounding area several times under Shenxue's insistence to confirm that there might still be any remaining abnormal traces, but I also tried to explore the city and communicate with people, attempting to gather more clues based on the information I had.
However, the immense disaster caused by the dragons and the beast tide effectively destroyed most of the traceable remains.
The onslaught of the monster horde concealed the unnatural traces outside the city, and the impact of the dragon beasts emerging from the ground also affected most of the city, breaking through the already unstable cavity structures and causing most of the ground to collapse, plunging the city into chaos.
Fortunately, most of the buildings within the Sacred Tree Barrier were created from special tree species distributed by the fairies. Thanks to the fairies' timely response, the treehouses, which adjusted their positions in time, greatly mitigated the damage to the residents hiding inside. Only a few suffered minor bumps and bruises, and most were merely frightened, requiring only a little rest.
Unfortunately, the suspected chimera research laboratory that was exposed was also reduced to ruins due to the collapse. After the cleanup and excavation, only a few pieces of equipment that could not be moved were found, and no more specific information was found. It was obviously abandoned by human hands.
—If we make further progress in our investigation, we might be able to catch them by the tail, right? Although such thoughts crossed my mind, I couldn't help but feel a chill of fear.
If the other party has already made corresponding contingency plans, burying the people who tracked them down here alive would obviously be a good countermeasure.
As for the young mage seen earlier in Moor's woodworking workshop, he vanished like a bubble. Even after searching through all the books in the library that recorded relevant events in the city, not a trace could be found.
Aside from the high probability that the other party is related to [Wisdom of the Stars], a cult that suddenly appeared and is affiliated with [Mystic Research Center], which has recently been secretly spreading strange ideas and beliefs, it is almost impossible to find any other breakthroughs.
I naturally also compiled and reported the relevant information to the academy, but all I received was a formulaic reply: "We have received your report. We will arrange for a specialist to handle it after verifying the relevant information and provide feedback." It seems that the academy is also extremely anxious about this beast tide.
—There have been some problems with the support sent to the transit hub.
It is said that those research students, whose minds were full of even more intense firepower, somehow managed to sneak past the teacher's inspection and brought over a newly developed double-barreled multi-magic bullet launcher. After stuffing in a small piece of pure magic stone fragment, they swept the bullets around, suppressing all the monsters to within 500 meters, making them difficult to approach.
Before the situation was fully resolved, they were just chasing after the tail of the fearful monster and didn't notice that they had accidentally blown up the feet of a Zinogre that happened to be passing by and came to hunt a fresh one. Unexpectedly, the monster turned around and came back, which directly triggered a fierce and intense battle.
Of course, in the end, the power of research prevailed by a small margin.
However, when the Thunder Wolf Dragon, dazed and scorched by the explosion, tucked its tail and fled, all that remained was a city wall shattered by the sea of thunder, a launch tower reduced to scrap metal, and a massive wave of monsters that were once again closing in menacingly.
It's hard to say whether they got the better deal or not, but it's true that the Thunder Wolf Dragon got beaten up twice for no reason while hunting.
We've gone off on a tangent.
In short, it's never a bad thing to keep an eye on the [Arcane Research Center] clue, and it would be even better if we could discover the hidden clues to [Wisdom of the Stars] from it.
Let's get back to the original question.
As I walked out of Moore's woodworking workshop, feeling frustrated by the lack of further clues, I wandered the streets, my mind wandering aimlessly, when my unconscious gaze was suddenly drawn to a shop not far away.
It was a simple shop that looked ordinary.
There were no luxurious decorations or exaggerated advertising slogans, nor were there any shop assistants dressed in light clothing enthusiastically soliciting customers nearby. If it weren't for the black and white sign hanging above the door with a faceless figure, I would almost have mistaken this deserted storefront for an ordinary resident's home.
In front of the shop, a young woman in a red dress with black silk veiled her face with a fan, sipping a cup of steaming black tea. Her long, white legs peeked out from under the high slit of her dress, elegantly crossed, as she leaned against a small table, watching each passerby with a smile in her eyes.
That wasn't what bothered me the most. What was even more surprising was that, despite such a beautiful woman elegantly drinking tea on the street, not a single passerby glanced at her—this phenomenon was so abnormal that I subconsciously assumed she was someone with considerable power behind her and not someone to be trifled with, or perhaps she had glimpsed something unseen by ordinary people. Therefore, I simply memorized her image and decided to leave first.
