Chapter 5 Pangolin

Aihe Garden is a very good community in Jiuheqiao. The home of the person who called the police was a simple two-bedroom, one-living room apartment. The woman's bedroom door was closed, which means that the animal could only hide in one living room, one bathroom, and one bedroom.

Liu Feng was rummaging through the sofa and cushions. Bai Song had sharp ears and seemed to hear some sound coming from the balcony. He waved to Liu Feng, and the two of them tiptoed to the balcony.

I saw a brown pointed-mouthed animal about 50 cm long and covered with scales. It was standing on its legs and its front limbs were looking for an opportunity to dig holes. Two flower pots on the balcony had been broken by it.

Pangolin? This word suddenly popped up in Bai Song's mind. After a closer look, it was exactly the same as the pangolin he had seen in the zoo.

"What is this?" Liu Feng was a little confused. Wasn't it a kitten or a puppy? How could this thing work?

"This should be a pangolin, right?" Bai Song said uncertainly, "I remember that this thing is only found in the south."

"Pangolin! Oh, what you said is true. If it was a pangolin, there would be no big problem. This thing should not bite people." Liu Feng said.

"Master Liu, this is a protected animal, right? How should we deal with this situation?" Bai Song looked confused.

"Protect animals? Are you sure?" Liu Feng asked, "Aren't these things all farmed?"

"Ah? I remember it seems to be a national second-class protected animal." Bai Song stood at the door of the balcony, fearing that the little animal would run away. (Note 1)

"Then wait a minute, I'll call the station, we can't do this." Liu Feng looked at the structure of the balcony and determined that the pangolin could not scratch through the reinforced concrete balcony, so he closed the balcony door. This operation made Bai Song a little stunned. Isn't it afraid that everything inside will be ruined? Shouldn't it be arrested?

"As you said, there are special agencies to protect animals. Even if this little thing demolishes the balcony, there are departments to compensate. But you," Liu Feng pointed at the tools in Bai Song's hand: "It would be troublesome if you hurt or killed it. If it hurts you, it would be even more troublesome."

Bai Song smiled embarrassedly and watched Liu Feng dial the phone.

At this moment, the hostess of the house had come out. She heard the two people talking and knew that it was a pangolin and had been locked on the balcony. She was no longer afraid and approached carefully, looking inside through the glass of the balcony door.

"Bai Song, please record the basic situation for her." After Liu Feng reported to the station, he made another call and walked out of the house.

"Wow, it really is a pangolin. I was really scared just now. This thing runs so fast and has scales. It's so scary." The woman patted her chest.

"Well, it's okay, it's a pity about your pots of flowers. By the way, tell me your basic information and I'll record it. I guess the relevant department will come to deal with it soon." Bai Song picked up the small notebook he carried with him.

"It's okay if the flowers are ruined. My name is Xu Fang, Fang means textile..." While speaking, Xu Fang kept looking at the pangolin on the balcony and asked, "Comrade police officer, do you think I can keep this little creature? I think it looks pretty good."

"Ah?" Bai Song almost thought he had heard it wrong. He was just scared to tears, and now he wanted to keep it for fun. I really don't know whether to say he is brave or timid.

"Oh, you said that this is a protected animal. Well, I just said that... So why is this thing here? Could it be someone else's pet?" Xu Fang said to himself.

"It's hard to say. Let's wait for the judgment of professionals."

Bai Song and Xu Fang chatted for about ten minutes, and then Liu Feng came in with Wei Suo.

Seeing the pangolin, Chief Wei was also a little surprised. "It really is a pangolin. Liu Feng, you and the new kid, wait here. The police from the branch's public security department will be here soon. I have to go out and contact the Forestry Bureau's Forest Public Security Bureau."

Wei left after he finished speaking. At this time, Bai Song suddenly found that Xu Fang had a smile on his face.

"What are you laughing at?" Bai Song was a little confused.

"Ah? I saw the policeman just called you little one. Why? You are so tall." Xu Fang smiled and measured upwards with his hand.

"Is that it? I'm new here, so it's normal for the old master to call me that." Bai Song disagreed. He was quite interested in the forest police that Wei mentioned.

Because he was afraid that the pangolin would run away, and the glass door of the balcony looked very flimsy, Bai Song simply moved a chair and sat next to the door. About half an hour later, two waves of people from the Public Security Department came in and left, and the comrades from the Forest Police arrived.

I have to say that professionals are different. It’s not that it’s impossible to catch the white pine, but they are wearing professional anti-bite and anti-cut equipment and carrying a dense steel cage, which makes them look very professional at first glance.

The two forest police officers who entered the balcony were very efficient. They subdued the pangolin as soon as they entered, put it in a cage, then covered the cage with cloth and took it out.

Wei Suo was relieved after seeing this and said quickly, "Thank you for your hard work. If it weren't for you, we really don't know how to deal with it."

The leading police officer from the forest police department waved his hands politely and said, "Thank you for this. This is not a simple pangolin. This pangolin is called the Hainan subspecies of the Chinese pangolin. It is already very endangered. I haven't encountered such a thing in several years to be able to save one here."

"Ah, Hainan subspecies? How come it's here? Are there any wild animals being trafficked?" Wei's face was a little solemn. Just by hearing the name, he knew that this must be a protected animal.

"Well, we don't rule out this possibility. Anyway, I don't believe that this is a wild animal that ran here." The forest police comrade nodded.

"Okay, I'll go back and call our Chief Sun to report. I'll ask the comrades who are doing the on-site investigation to inspect this place. If you accept the case, I'll have to trouble you to issue a certificate or something like that." Chief Wei said.

"That's no problem. Let's go back first. This little thing is frightened and can't be kept in the cage forever."

After saying this, the forest police officer left in two steps. Before leaving, he exchanged contact information with Xu Fang. Wei Suo and the people from the Public Security Department also left with him.

Bai Song glanced at Liu Feng and asked, "Master Liu, shall we go?"

"Why are you leaving? Didn't you hear what Chief Wei just said, that we need to do an on-site investigation?" After Liu Feng finished speaking, he turned around and left the house, walking towards the police car.

Bai Song had learned about this subject at university, but had little practical experience, so he followed immediately.

Liu Feng took out a small box from the trunk of the car, took out a camera and several tape measures, and began to conduct a detailed investigation of the scene. Bai Song followed carefully behind him, watching and learning quietly.

Note 1: In June 2020, due to the sharp decline in the number of Chinese pangolins, it has been designated as a national first-class protected animal.
