Chapter 10 Zombie Siege

It was destined to be a sleepless night, with everyone anxiously watching messages in the group chat and from the property management at home. Those with security cameras were constantly checking them.

The group chat was unusually lively today; within a minute, it was flooded with 99+ messages. Before we knew it, it was 3 AM, and the chat showed no signs of quieting down. On Douyin (TikTok), news of zombie outbreaks across various regions was trending, far surpassing the popularity of the Spring Festival Gala. At this moment, no matter the celebrity, expert, host, or program, it held any appeal for the people in this villa area.

"Mom and Dad, Xuanxuan, you go to sleep. We'll stay here and watch over her," Wang Zixiang said with concern.

"Who can sleep at a time like this?" Ye's father said.

"It's alright, relax. No matter how many zombies come, they can't get into the community right now. Even if they do, they can't get into our house. You should rest, otherwise your body won't be able to take it," Ye Yunyi advised.

"My mom and I will stay here together." Wang Xuanxuan hugged Ye Yunyi.

"Okay." Ye Yunyi affectionately patted her head.

"Then I'll go rest for a while. There has to be someone who's energetic," said Ye's mother. Ye's mother has always had a good attitude. On the first day of the zombie virus outbreak, she was able to see zombies on the spot, and when she encountered zombies, she would remind Ye Yunyi to be careful.

"Go ahead, Dad should go too."

"Okay, then let's go rest." Ye's father was also over 60 years old. After Ye Yunyi's persuasion, the string in his heart snapped, and he also felt a little sleepy. So he went to rest.

Ye Yunyi and Wang Zixiang went to the sunroom, and Ye Xuanxuan followed, but she couldn't resist the drowsiness and fell asleep after another hour.

Looking at the surveillance footage on the computer, there was nothing unusual in the community except for the patrolling security guards. Several more groups of zombies came one after another on the small road behind, but the neighbors lured them to the wasteland below using the same method they had used before.

The zombies in the wasteland were swarming like dumplings being dropped into a pot. And so, they passed Lunar New Year's Eve unscathed, welcoming the first day of the new year, the Spring Festival.

Thanks to the internet, the reason for the large number of zombies appeared the next day. It turned out that a nearby residential area, Happiness Community, had been overrun. The cause was that someone had set off firecrackers and fireworks outside the community, attracting nearby zombies. When the zombies fled into the community, they also attracted more zombies. In their attempt to escape, they released the zombies into the community as well, resulting in the security guard being bitten to death by the zombies. Before they could report the incident and the gate could be closed, a large number of zombies entered the community.

Upon entering the residential compound, it would be fine if everyone followed the requirements to isolate in their rooms. However, since it was a commercial apartment building with rooms of only a few dozen square meters, people got tired of staying there for a long time. Some disobedient individuals felt that nothing had happened during the days of isolation, so they went downstairs on their own. As a result, they were arrested.

Those who were scratched managed to escape home, thinking they were safe. However, they soon turned into zombies themselves, infecting their families. If the doors were closed, it might have been manageable, but some people turned into zombies as soon as they entered, before they could even close the door. And so, one became two, two became four, and the entire neighborhood of tens of thousands fell under zombie control. Of course, the majority survived, as many remained obedient. However, with zombies roaming the neighborhood and between buildings, these people were truly trapped inside their homes.

As for why zombies were heading towards the villa area, the explanation is that they were probably just randomly wandering around.

Many neighborhoods like Xingfu Community fell victim to the virus on New Year's Eve.

The Spring Festival Gala is no longer being replayed on TV; instead, people are being repeatedly reminded to strictly adhere to home quarantine measures. Do not go out, do not go out.

After this incident, everyone became much more obedient and stayed at home obediently, so there were far fewer people who would do something reckless.

The next afternoon, after everyone had caught up on their sleep, they all went to the rooftop to look around. Winters in City C are always foggy, but today was a beautiful day with a warm sun. From the rooftop, they looked at the zombies in the wasteland, seeing them much more clearly than the night before. They were scattered in twos and threes, numbering close to 100, wandering in the wasteland, almost like crops growing there.

Actually, once you get used to it, you're not so afraid anymore; at least they don't have any mental issues.

"Mom, Mom, look!" Wang Xuanxuan mysteriously handed something to Ye Yunyi.

"A telescope," Ye Yunyi asked, looking at the small, delicate telescope in her hand.

"I bought it to play with before."

"This is really good stuff," Ye Yunyi said, looking into the distance through her binoculars. Things that were invisible to the naked eye became clear. Zombies were roaming the highway in the distance, as were those in the square, the front gate, and the back gate. Seeing this, she took a breath and looked towards the back mountain. There were even zombies on the stone steps leading from the back gate to the back mountain.

It seems their villa area is also surrounded; hopefully, they won't be able to break in.

There's almost no news from the community anymore. After all, Happiness Community is also under this community's management. With so many zombies outside, let alone community staff, even the security team probably wouldn't dare to go out easily.

All they can do is try to calm public sentiment.

At this moment, Ye Yunyi felt relieved, as if her destiny had finally arrived.

"Luckily I listened to Yiyi, otherwise I don't know how I would have survived." Ye's mother said, looking at the group of zombies.

Even so, zombies would gather here. Most of them were discovered by the owners and lured to the wasteland on the side near the back of the mountain, but some still slipped through the net and lingered on the small roads of the uninhabited villas.

The number of zombies around them kept increasing. Stray cats and dogs that happened to be passing by wandered into the zombie horde and were quickly reduced to bones. Some, however, survived and escaped, becoming zombie dogs and zombie cats. These two were even more terrifying than the zombies themselves, because zombie cats could climb walls.

When people discovered the first zombie cat, they immediately became uneasy, as everyone worried that the cat might climb into their homes at any time.

Whether it's a zombie human, a zombie cat, or a zombie dog, they are not only sensitive to sound, but also to the smell of blood.

When there is no food, they will be in a dormant state, but whether they are in a dormant state or not, they will be awakened immediately and enter hunting mode as soon as they sense a living creature approaching.

So on the 10th day of the zombie virus outbreak, instead of being controlled, it caused widespread infection. Zombies could be seen everywhere in the city center, and several neighborhoods were empty, with no living people in sight.

In the suburbs where Ye Yunyi lived, the villa area was only slightly better; everyone was trapped, and it had truly become a zombie siege.
