Ye Yunjuan and Zhao Xixi entered the gate before it closed, keeping the zombies outside.
She and Zhao Xixi could finally catch their breath, their hands supporting their bent knees as they gasped for air. In an instant, the outside was surrounded by people and zombies.
She was unaware of what had just happened and was astonished to see so many zombies. But the thought of Zhao Yong caused her heart to ache, and she wondered how he was doing.
She pulled Zhao Xixi and stared longingly out the door, hoping to see Zhao Yong there. But all she could see were people running around in all directions and zombies twisting their bodies and baring their teeth as they chased after them.
Gradually, tears welled up in her eyes, and her heart ached sharply. She really couldn't accept that Zhao Yong had left her like this.
"Mom, is Dad never coming back?" Zhao Xixi cried as she hugged Ye Yunjuan.
"No, no." Hearing Zhao Xixi's words, Ye Yunjuan felt even more distressed. She kept shaking her head, tears streaming down her face, and said, "Dad will definitely come back safely."
While Ye Yunyi and Zhao Xixi were still anxiously watching outside, Zhao Yong ran towards the building where he lived after he ran away. When he arrived, the door was already closed. He bypassed the crowd and zombies at the door, found a spot that hadn't been attacked by zombies, and climbed up to the second floor.
He was also worried about Ye Yunjuan and Zhao Xixi and wanted to confirm their safety as soon as possible. But when he returned home and didn't see Ye Yunjuan and Zhao Xixi, his heart sank. Had they not returned?
He didn't have time to explain anything to his parents. He rushed downstairs, and when he saw two familiar figures, he immediately felt relieved. He smiled and thought, "Thank goodness, they're both here."
He quickly walked over and embraced them from behind. Ye Yunjuan and Zhao Xixi, seeing it was him, excitedly turned to report. Ye Yunjuan cried, "You're not dead! Thank goodness, you're not dead!"
Zhao Yong rested his chin on Ye Yunjuan's head and pulled her into his arms, saying, "How could I possibly die? I promised to protect you for the rest of my life."
Suddenly getting emotional under such circumstances, Ye Yunjuan laughed and playfully punched his chest.
"Ouch, that hurts," Zhao Yong laughed, but didn't let go.
"We need to prepare to escape." Zhao Yong watched as the zombie horde outside grew larger and larger. No one was coming to kill the zombies yet; this base was probably doomed.
He pulled Ye Yunjuan and Zhao Xixi into the vending machine on the first floor, took out their phones, swiped all the money in the machine, and exchanged it for food, household items, and drinks.
I originally planned to go to the cafeteria and convenience store on the first floor to buy some things, but due to this incident, they are both closed.
They carried their purchases to the second floor as discreetly as possible and secretly returned to their home.
Mr. and Mrs. Zhao saw what was happening outside through the window and paced anxiously inside. Their son had just entered the room, asked about his wife and granddaughter, and then hurriedly ran away. They were also very uneasy.
They only breathed a sigh of relief when they heard the door lock turn and the family of three returned with a full load of things.
"Mom and Dad, pack your things, we have to leave right away," Zhao Yong said.
"Okay, okay." Mr. and Mrs. Zhao agreed and quickly went to pack their things without asking any questions.
Only then did Ye Yunjuan pull Zhao Yong into the room and say, "Let me see how badly you're injured?"
Zhao Yong stopped her hand as she was checking her injuries and said, "You've suffered some injuries, but you're fine. There are no fatal wounds, and you can still manage."
“Let’s go to my sister’s house. They’ve done a good job of defense and are self-sufficient. My sister has been urging us to come over. We can’t stay here any longer, so let’s go to my sister’s place,” Ye Yunjuan said excitedly. Then, remembering something, she added, “But it’s a long way, over 1,000 kilometers. There will definitely be many hardships and dangers along the way. I’ll listen to you.”
“I’m going to my sister’s,” Zhao Yong said firmly. Although it was far, it was only a little over 1,000 kilometers away. Normally, it would only take two days to drive there on the highway. Now, at worst, it would take ten days to half a month, and if all else failed, a month would be fine too. He could still protect his family.
Soon everyone had packed their things. Since it was a bit far from the car, Zhao Yong told everyone to stay at home and use curtains to make a long strip while he drove the car over. Then everyone climbed down the fabric.
Zhao Yong secretly went down to the first floor from where he had come up earlier. People who had finished work were going home, some were being chased by zombies, and others were fighting with them.
As Zhao Yong ran past, he saw one of his brothers who had been following him almost get bitten by a zombie. He shot an arrow, which hit the zombie in the head.
When the man saw that it was Zhao Yong, he excitedly ran over and said, "Brother Yong, you saved my life again."
Zhao Yong retrieved the arrow from the zombie and said to his brother, "Awei, run! Protect yourself." After saying that, Zhao Yong ran towards where he had parked his car.
Fortunately, he had checked his car in the past few days and collected a lot of gasoline in the trunk, as well as some daily necessities and drinking water.
Because there were few people around the vehicle and no zombies had yet attacked, he immediately started the engine and drove off. His family members were closely observing the situation, and when they saw their car approaching, they quickly prepared to leave.
There were still many people below; living people were more attractive than the noise the car was making. There weren't many zombies around the car, just one or two, which Zhao Yong had already dealt with.
Soon, Zhao Xixi slid down the strip of cloth, and Zhao Yong quickly helped her into the car, followed by Zhao's father. Then they threw down the packed items as well. Zhao Yong protected her while Zhao's father put the items into the trunk and the car.
After everything was put away, Aunt Zhao climbed down, and finally Ye Yunjuan followed.
Their commotion naturally attracted some people and zombies. They all gathered around. Zhao Yong dealt with some zombies and rescued some people. After Ye Yunjuan came down, they desperately climbed up the building along the strip of cloth, and a few more people made it to the top.
After the whole family got into the car, Zhao Yong stepped on the gas and rammed into another group of zombies, saving several people. When they drove to the gate, there was no one guarding it, and a large number of zombies had gathered outside the once safe gate.
Zhao Yong stepped on the gas and smashed a bloody path through the horde of zombies.
After Zhao Yong and his group escaped, some families with cars followed suit. They drove off in the same car. The Zhao family, survivors of the ordeal, watched the base recede into the distance, their hearts filled with sorrow.
"How could something be so perfectly fine and then ruined like this?" Zhao's father sighed.
No one spoke. To be honest, the incident stemmed from the two henchmen Zhao Yong killed, but they didn't die. Instead, Zhao Yong, Ye Yunjuan, and Zhao Xixi were the ones who died.
“No, it’s not us who are wrong, it’s Xu Qiang. They’re the ones who wanted us dead, they’re the ones who bullied people, they’re the ones who turned their shelter into this state. They are the real culprits.” Ye Yunjuan saw Zhao Yong’s guilt and said firmly.
