Chapter 16 Digging a passage between the villas 1

Compared to previous apocalyptic stories, their experience was slower. This might be related to the three-year pandemic they had previously experienced, where everyone became accustomed to home isolation, which greatly reduced the spread of the zombie virus.

If I hadn't known about the zombie effect upon death, I probably could have survived a little longer. Holding on for a month like that was already quite an achievement. But ultimately, I couldn't hold on any longer.

The tunnel digging at Ye Yunyi's house is progressing smoothly. In the past few days, they have already dug into the courtyard of the neighboring community. However, they still plan to open the tunnel entrance inside the house. The tunnel entrance can only be accessed from top to bottom, so they must go to the neighboring courtyard. This way, it will be less likely for people to discover their way in and out. However, getting to the other courtyard will not be easy.

Exhausted from digging for several days, they decided to rest for a day and discuss how to get to the next building. They ultimately decided that Ye Yunyi and her father would go, while Wang Zixiang would check the surrounding area via surveillance cameras.

The number of zombies in the neighborhood isn't too bad. If you go in through the outer gate and then climb over the iron gate on the other side, you should be able to avoid them. They need to be quick, though; it's hard to say when the number of zombies will increase.

This villa area is quite large, covering 3,000 acres. A small river meanders through it, with two villas in the middle. Two rows of villas are built around the river, and the villas are situated halfway up the mountain, so they aren't flat but rather ascend in tiers. Ye Yunyi's house is at the very top of the villa area, backed by the mountain, but it has a good view, overlooking the surrounding area and the distance. The small supermarket that Mr. Li used to run was located in the middle of the villa area, opposite his house.

The villa area has a great environment with lots of greenery and many different styles of scenery, including pavilions, lawns, woodlands, long wisteria-covered walkways, sports fields, yoga studios, swimming pools, and rest areas—it's like living in a park.

The Xingfu residential area, which had previously been affected by the demolition, was a resettlement community. This villa was built to replace the demolished houses; it was the housing allocated to them. It's very close to the villa area; it's about 300 meters to the right of the villa gate.

The resettlement community was crowded. After the Happiness Community fell, many zombies gathered at the main gate, and some were found at the back gate and in the previously abandoned land. The zombies inside the community were self-produced, mainly wandering around Building 3. A few scattered ones were wandering with the people from that night, and some zombies were trapped in their own homes, mutated by infection or death of cats and dogs.

There were also one or two zombies wandering around Li Biao's door, and some of them followed him back, which caused some trouble for Ye Yunyi and the others when they went out. But they had to get to Building 38 next door no matter what.

During the day, they watered, fertilized, and weeded the vegetables, which thrived in the greenhouse.

In the warm spring of March, the weather gradually warms up, which is also the time when all things grow.

We've already eaten the vegetables we planted a few times. The sweet potatoes are taking longer to grow, but we don't have to be as careful with the leaves as before. The potato leaves are also growing thick and lush.

In March, when the grass grows and the birds sing, it's the perfect season for sowing. Dad said we could take down the greenhouse and prepare to plant the corn.

Looking at the warm sun, Ye Yunyi wondered what she would be doing if there were no zombie virus. She would probably still be running her clothing business, and the villa would be a perfect place for her to shoot footage.

She and Wang Zixiang may have divorced. After all, she really couldn't accept a man who lacked self-awareness, was arrogant, and lacked a sense of responsibility, and was struggling to survive with her parents and children.

However, she and Wang Zixiang fell in love freely. She got together with him because of his talent, but later found that apart from that little bit of talent, he was really not worth mentioning in other aspects, especially in terms of his sense of responsibility.

What would have happened to them if they hadn't won the lottery? Their house would probably have been taken by debt collectors, leaving them to live in cheap rented rooms. They wouldn't be able to buy much to store, and with the zombie virus outbreak, they'd likely be dead within ten days. They wouldn't even be able to be with their parents.

So, thank God for His mercy, she looked at Wang Zixiang, the man who had dragged her into hell, but God had actually saved their family.

Sigh, she took a breath to calm herself down. There was still a lot to do; she should look ahead.

Ye Yunyi walked into her studio, looking at the sewing machine that hadn't been used in a long time, and the piles of fabric and yarn. She lit an incense stick, and the scent of citrus and lychee wafted over. She lay down on the sofa in the room, closed her eyes, and fell into a deep sleep.

After Ye Yunyi fell asleep, Wang Zixiang also came here. He stared blankly at the sleeping Ye Yunyi, then turned around and went upstairs. He had actually sensed that before the zombie virus outbreak, Ye Yunyi was going to ask him for a divorce, but she just wanted to wait until after the New Year. He didn't expect the zombie virus to break out.

Looking back over the past two years, she had transformed from a delicate, quiet, and gentle woman into a strong woman with resolute eyes, capable of handling anything on her own, even going shopping and going to Building 38 by herself after the zombie virus outbreak. The love in her eyes was long gone, replaced by deep disappointment.

After dinner, it got completely dark, with only a faint moonlight shining through. Only a few houses had lights on – some solar-powered, some by candlelight – but most were in complete darkness. Wang Zixiang checked the surroundings via surveillance cameras. There were no zombies from the front door to building 38. The two zombies were currently wandering around Li Biao's doorway, occasionally letting out a low growl.

Ye Yunyi and her father quietly opened the door, thankfully without making a sound.

Ye Yunyi went out first. Under the cover of the trumpet vine, she observed the surroundings again. Finding no zombies, she waved to her father, who quietly came out as well, instructing her mother to close the door.

As they stepped outside, they walked slowly and silently. Calculating the distance of about 100 meters, it felt like they were walking a kilometer, each step filled with trepidation.

Firstly, I was worried about alerting the two zombies, and secondly, I was afraid that there might be mutated cats hiding among the green plants by the roadside. However, holding the tools in my hand made me feel a little more at ease.

Wang Xuanxuan stood upstairs, holding a bow, ready at any moment to save her mother and grandfather should anything happen.

Wang Zixiang nervously watched the surveillance cameras around him in the monitoring room, not daring to blink.

After walking for about 10 minutes, they arrived at the door, which was locked. They had to climb over to open it from the inside.

Ye Yunyi struggled to climb inside, and only breathed a sigh of relief when the door was opened and her father was let out.

The people watching the surveillance footage finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Afterwards, Ye Yunyi and her father arrived at the front door of the house. It was unfurnished, just the developer's door. They tried the original key, and it opened! They had expected to have to put in more effort, but to their surprise...

They went inside and quickly inspected the house. Aside from being unfurnished and bare earth, it had doors and windows, ensuring basic safety. Once opened up, it could serve as a refuge.
