Chapter 83 Attempt to Steal a Chicken Backfires

"Ye Yunyi, Wang Zixiang, Zhao Yong, get out here!" Duan Yuxin's shrill shout rang out at the entrance of the office building.

Then Xiao Fang's voice rang out: "Duan Yuxin, what are you doing? Let's talk things out."

Ye Yunyi, Wang Zixiang, and Zhao Yong exchanged a glance and quickly came out.

"You heartless bastards, do you think this villa area is really your domain? It belongs to all of us owners, and we have a share of everything. Why shouldn't we get a share?" Seeing the three of them come out, Duan Yuxin made an even bigger scene.

A commotion broke out, and a large crowd gathered around. Ye Yunyi noticed that the Li family was not among the people in the crowd.

"Because of the Chinese New Year, we distributed last month's wages in advance this month," Xiao Fang replied immediately before Ye Yunyi could ask.

"Oh, why weren't they allocated to you? Can you represent the Li family?" Ye Yunyi asked instead of answering.

"What does this have to do with whether I represent the Li family or not? Why should we, who are all owners in the villa area, not be allocated one?" Duan Yuxin cleverly avoided the question of whether she could represent the Li family.

"Can you represent the Li family?" Ye Yunyi continued to ask.

"I..." Duan Yuxin hesitated for a moment, then argued forcefully, "So what if you're a representative? So what if you're not? Why shouldn't you get allocated land? This villa area doesn't belong to you alone."

“Okay, neighbors, come and tell her what you mean by ‘allocation’?” Ye Yunyi said to the crowd.

"Salary," the crowd answered in unison.

"Did you hear me clearly? Salary, do you know what salary is?" Ye Yunyi asked Duan Yuxin.

"Hmph," Duan Yuxin sneered, "All I know is that you've occupied the public resources of the villa area. These resources belong to us, and you have to allocate them to us."

“That makes sense,” Ye Yunyi nodded in reply.

Upon hearing this, Duan Yuxin raised her head, looking smug.

Ye Yunyi remained silent for the moment, because she spotted Boss Li and his brother Li Huaqiang in the crowd. Let's see what they're up to.

Li Huaqiang quickly came over and pulled Duan Yuxin aside. Boss Li greeted Ye Yunyi and the others with a smile. They didn't say that Duan Yuxin was wrong, so it seemed that they agreed with her.

"Mr. Li, can Duan Yuxin represent the Li family?" Ye Yunyi didn't give them any face and asked directly.

"This..." Boss Li hadn't expected Ye Yunyi to still be pressing this issue. He'd only come out because Ye Yunyi acknowledged that the villa area was a public resource and that they should have a share. He wanted to push this issue further to try and get some benefits, since their family's reserves were limited. Even if they grew their own vegetables and fished, their lives would only get worse. Moreover, non-renewable resources had to be exchanged for goods, and they would eventually become destitute, while the others in the villa area would live better and better, almost back to their previous lives.

They discussed it at home for a long time, but they were unwilling to farm or work. However, they had run out of resources. In the end, Duan Yuxin stepped forward and said that she had a solution, which led to today's events.

"Let's go inside and talk." Boss Li didn't answer. He thought that if they went inside and things fell apart with so many people outside, it would look too bad.

“Okay.” Ye Yunyi, Wang Zixiang, and Zhao Yong exchanged a glance and invited the three members of the Li family into the office. Xiao Fang made tea for them and sat down next to them.

“Yiyi, Zixiang, we’re all neighbors, and I don’t want to say anything too harsh, but Yuxin is right about one thing: our family also has a share of the public resources in the villa area.” After hesitating for a moment, Mr. Li decided to speak up anyway.

"Yes," Ye Yunyi affirmed.

"What are your thoughts, Mr. Li?" Ye Yunyi asked. Her expression and voice were flat, and Mr. Li couldn't discern her emotions.

He was a little nervous, took a sip of water to calm himself down, and said, "When we're thinking about how to distribute these supplies, we should be taken into consideration as well."

“Okay, that makes sense,” Ye Yunyi replied confidently.

The three members of the Li family were overjoyed, while Zhao Yong and Wang Zixiang remained calm. Xiao Fang couldn't contain herself any longer and said:

"The safety of the community also requires manpower and resources. So, Mr. Li, who has enjoyed the safety of the community, shouldn't you also pay for some of the costs? And the spring water and public baths that we provide, I see that Mr. Li and your family have used quite a lot. Oh, and last time there was the half-corpse virus, we also provided a lot of medicine. Shouldn't Mr. Li also pay for that?"

Ye Yunyi remained calm on the surface, but in her heart, she gave Xiao Fang a big thumbs up.

"That makes sense," Ye Yunyi said succinctly. Even Zhao Yong and Wang Zixiang couldn't help but twitch their faces, wanting to laugh.

Mr. Li's face flushed red and then turned pale. Only Duan Yuxin, who was tilting her head back, still wanted to argue, but Li Huaqiang held her back tightly.

“We can calculate it. If there’s any left over, we’ll distribute it all to Mr. Li without missing a penny. If it’s not enough, Mr. Li will make up the difference to us without missing a penny,” Ye Yunyi said.

"This..." Mr. Li wanted to argue, but reason told him that he had to weigh the pros and cons.

"Oh, by the way, your child is still studying at our school for free." Xiaofang immediately took out her notebook and phone, as if to do some calculations.

"We're all neighbors, there's no need to be so formal," Mr. Li said with a smile.

"No, we need to be clear about this, otherwise it wouldn't be good if we took advantage of you. Xiaofang, you do the math," Wang Zixiang said.

"Received," Xiaofang answered loudly.

Xiaofang quickly calculated the figures: she divided the number of villas by the number of usable public areas in the villa district to get the average for each household; then she deducted the cost from the grain output and divided it by the number of villas to get the average for each household; then she calculated the fee that Mr. Li should pay for using the public areas; and after subtracting the two, she found that Mr. Li still had to pay the villa district a large sum of money.

Seeing this expense, Mr. Li realized that even if he used up all the supplies in his house, he still wouldn't be able to pay it back.

His blood pressure spiked instantly, and his vision blurred, but he persevered. This... truly a case of trying to steal a chicken but losing the rice instead.

"Yiyi, Zixiang, this public area is meant for everyone to use, and these public resources are the same. I think we should just let it go. We were confused today, please forgive us." Boss Li was flexible and apologized immediately.

Ye Yunyi didn't want to push people to the brink. The saying goes, "Don't drive a dog into a dead end." But if someone keeps showing up to annoy people, it's really not fun. As Ye Yunyi, she could forgive it, but as a manager, she couldn't.

"Mr. Li, as the saying goes, nothing can be accomplished without rules. There are so many people watching this matter."

Sweat beaded on Mr. Li's face; he regretted stepping forward. He asked tremblingly, "Then, Yiyi, what do you think we should do?"
